I am trying to find records in Grainger Co. Tennessee for ADAM STROPES b. 1793 in North Carolina to Peter STROPES and unknown mother. Peter died shortly after Adam was born and the mother married a Mr. TANKERSLEY and moved to Tennessee with Adam. [Adam's obituary says Jacksboro, Tennessee which apparently wasn't founded until 1806 and so that information cannot be correct.  However since that's the only area I have a reference to, that's where I've been searching.  I believe in between 1799-1801 that area would have been in Grainger Co. before that Knox Co., after that Anderson Co.] Adam's mother died in 1800 in Tennessee, and Adam was raised by a Mr. THARP. [Again according to his obituary.] By 1812, Adam had joined the Army at Knoxville, and fought in the war and then moved to Vincennes Indiana. I have been searching for records of orphans and guardians or perhaps apprenticeship records for Adam or his other Stropes siblings. Actually I'm looking for anything on Stropes in Eastern Tennessee, it has been most frustrating trying to find the names of his mother and step-father or the mysterious Mr. Tharp who raised him. Adam's name was originally spelled STROUP, but he spelled it Stropes in all the records in Indiana. I would welcome any suggestions or help with my mystery. thanks! Denise [email protected]
