    2. Gail: I think I can clear up the Joseph Long mystery for you. Joseph Long was born 9 March 1846 in Tennessee (I do not know if it was Grainger or Hawkins County, as they lived in both areas). He was, I feel sure, the son of Mary Ann Proffitt and Parteman/Piteman (Porter) Long. And Porter Long was the son of Reuben Long. Mary Ann Proffitt was the daughter of David Proffit and Mary Bright, according to the Proffitt researchers I shared information with. Joseph died 31 August 1922 in Howell County, Missouri and is buried in the Fowler Cemetery. Sarah E. Mayes was born 4 December 1848 in Tennessee and died 21 April 1924 in Howell County, Missiouri and is also buried in the Fowler Cemetery. I do not know who her parents were. However, I have never ordered their death certificates, and maybe I should. Many of their children (they had 8) are also buried in the Fowler Cemetery. Their children were Mahala Henrietta Long, William T. Long, Allen P. Long, Owen F. Long, Elnora Tennessee Long, James E. Long, Dickson D. Long and Luvenia Elizabeth Long. This gets confusing. I will refer to Parteman/Piteman as Porter which is the name he mostly used. It was a case of brother and sister marrying brother and sister. Porter married Mary Ann Profitt and her brother Gabriel married Porter's sister, Catherine Long. Gabriel and Catherine lived in Knoxville. My GGG Grandfather, Lawson Long married Mary (Polly) Shropshire, and her brother David Shropshire married Lawson's sister, Sally Long. It sometimes makes you feel like you are "your own grandmother", doesn't it? Lawson and Sally also were children of Reuben Long. Then, to make things more confusing, Mary Ann Proffitt and Porter Long's daughter, Mary Elizabeth Long married Noah McGoldrick, son of James Robert McGoldrick and Lavinia Jarnagin. James Robert and Lavinia were my GG Grandparents. So I descend from both the Longs and the McGoldricks. Noah McGoldrick and most of his siblings left Grainger County around 1878 and migrated to Howell County, Missouri. According to history in Howell County, many East Tennessee families settled in this area of Missouri. They came by Wagon Trains. I have visited there several times, meeting my McGoldrick relatives and visiting the cemeteries, taking pictures of tombstones, etc. If you need further info on this family, let me know. Carolyn

    3. Thank you. I too have it that Joseph and Sarah Mayes died in Howell County, Missouri. I have never checked this out personally, however, the information I have is from a Mayes researcher that I do trust. As I said Sarah was the daughter of Ned and Mahala Jane Jones Mayes. When Mahala James died in Hamblen County the only child she mentioned in her will was was Scytha Caroline Mayes Sloan. I have transcribed this document and posted it to the Mayes Public Domain website, Selena Mayes DuLac, webmistress. However, earlier documents exist in connection with Ned Mayes estate settlement, petitions to divide up the land etc. in which all the children were mentioned etc. Larry Hodge went to the courthouse or the schoolhouse and transcribed some of these documents and posted them to the Mayes message board at GenForum. This was only a few years back so hopefully these documents are still extant. Edward "Ned" Mayes was the son of my third great grandmother Jane Mayes Ivy's brother Dudley. One of Ned and Mahala Mayes daughters, Henryetta, married my great grandmother Delila Alice Mayes Roberts brother oldest brother William in 1860 in Grainger County (if this is giving you a really big headache I am twice descended from interesting Mayes family<smile>. Ned Mayes died in 1863 in Grainger County. I do not have the exact date. Ned Mayes and Mahala Jane Jones Mayes were buried in the old Mayes family cemetery which is now under Cherokee Lake as are Ned and Mahala. They were designated "to remain". Ned and Mahala had stones, but it is believed that other Mayes were buried there including my 4th great grandparents Sherrod and Elizabeth Smith Mayes. According to documents connected to Ned's estate William Mayes was "deceased" by 1863. I have NEVER been able to find out what happened to William Mayes. I think he might have been killed in the Civil War. However, young people did just die...Henryetta married a man named again, a man named James King and died in Teliquah?? Oklahoma. However, I think that my great great grandparents James and Louisa Gray Mayes raised Thompsey Ella. She is listed in their household in the 1870 census and married Robert Hill..well I am just going on and on....I could go on about these families connections forever and ever. However, as a contradiction to my family all going courting together..It would have been Ned and Mahala's youngest son James Perry Mayes who married Nick and Jane Long's Mary Louvenia. The infromation I had from the Mayes researcher was that James Perry and Mary :Louvenia were died in Washington County, Arkansas. I found them in Goshen Cemetery (online! Every now I get really grouchy and think the internet is going to "spoil" genealogy. Then I think how long it would have taken to find out all I have learned through posting queries in genealogical publications, wiriting snailmail letters, etc. I am quite certain I would not be as far along in my researches as i am now.) I also found Mary Louvenia listed in the Arkansas death index at Ancestry so I have a certificate number. I have never ordered an Arkansas death certificate, but there are instructions online. <grin> Anyway thank for your information on Sarah Mayes's, Joseph. I did know that folks from Grainger County went to Howell County. Scytha Caroline Mayes Sloan, Sarahs's sister also moved to Howell County, Missouri and died there in 1912. I thought Joseph might be descended from your Reuben, but I wasn't sure.
