    3. Dear Carolyn, > In checking marriages for Nancy Long I came across a marriage for Nancy > Cooter to Robert Long on 17 February 1839 in Jefferson County. Marriage > sanctioned by John Ward, JP. Do you know this couple and are they > connected to your > Nicholas Long who married Jane Cooter I am familiar with this couple, but I am not sure if Robert Long IS Nicholas's brother. I am going to get in touch with Jefferson County Archiives to see what Long estate records are available. Nancy would be Abraham and Sarah Cooter's daughter. <smile> there wouldn't be any other possibilities. <grin> in general my family all went courting together. My husband makes jokes about my family history, but I just tell him that, I know a lot of people in these modern times who are double cousins and people got around less back then. Or alternatively <grin> they had ONLY one horse so they all went "courting" together Or they had perhaps they had NO horse so everyone intermarried with the family next door. Or from a similar "card" on this list whoever you were take a bow, "Just didn't want to get on the horse and ride over the mountain." <grin> Nevertheless in just getting my information in order to send on to you. I reflected on some things. The Joseph Long who married Sarah A. Mayes daughter of Mahala and Edward was not Mary LouVenia Mayes (wife of James Perry's) brother. I am getting ready to order Venia Mayes death certificate just to make absolutely sure,(I try to avoid ordering ten dollar death certificates if at all possible, but the Mayes are the Longs are just too convoluted to leave absolutely ANYTHING to chance) but the ONLY possibilility from the census for Mary LouVenia's ancestry is that I she is the daughter of Nick Long. I have <grin> long known who the other Joseph Hugh Long was. His daughter Rufus P. Ivy's "Cousin Carrie" died out here September 6, 1972 and is buried in Home Cemetery. I remember her very clearly. BEFORE anyone asks I do not know who Sarah Mayes (Ned and Jennie Jones Mayes daughter, there were lots of Sarah Mayes) Joseph was <smile> There is a Joseph Long age 15 in the house of Mary Long (widow) age 45 on the 1860 Grainger County census who is the right age. . Also as I told Regan there is NO information in my files that actually SAYS that the Edward Mayes who married Nancy Greenlee was Easter and Liggen's son. He could be..I have run across messages that SAY he is, but maybe this is just an assumption based on the fact that Liggen and Easter's daughters Mary and Phebe married Nancy Greenlee's brothers. Nevertheless I do believe that there is a pretty good possibility tha the Robert Long who married Nancy Cooter is Nick's brother. Gail
