List: I have Eliza J. Coffey, daughter of Thomas Nelson Coffey who married a William Shockley June 1885. After William's "Will" death in January 1910 Eliza drops off the Grainger Co., 1920 census. Further research has found that her son Elbert Shockley born c 1889 named his mother Eliza J. Sutton as his next of kin when filing his WW1 registeration. Additional work has found that Eliza J. Coffey Shockley married Isom Sutton, 33 years her senior. No marriage found as of yet for Isom and Eliza but two of her children, Elbert married Victoria Cook and daughter Lula married Murphy Cook, both of these being children of Wiley Cook of Hawkins Co., TN. Lula married Murphy in 1916. Wiley Cook and his family were neighbors of Isom Sutton and his first wife Mary Barnard Sutton. Mary Sutton died in 1911. From this I deduct that Eliza must have moved with her remaining children still at home, from Grainger to Hawkins Co., TN before the time her father Thomas Nelson Coffey died in 1917. Isom and Mary Barnard Sutton are buried in Hawkins Co., TN in the Sutton Cemetery. Eliza J. Coffey Shockley Sutton is buried in Meadow Branch Cemetery, Bean Station, Grainger Co., TN. The 1900 Grainger Co., TN census has Eliza as having 8 children with 5 living. The five Shockley children are: Eva Mae (married a Perry Dalton-need help on this Perry)11/1886 Lean (possibly Orlena named after Eliza's aunt Orlena/Orenna Coffey) 12/1887 Nelson T. (moved to Indiana, married a Jessie) 11/1891 Lula Elizabeth (married Murphy Cook) 12/1893 James Elbert (married Victoria Cook) 07/1899 Etta (married an unknown Cook-need help on this too) 04/1905 I suspect that the William Shockley whom Eliza married was a William Berry Shockley but have no documentation found which confirms this theory. Eliza's husband William "Will" Shockley was born (using census information) c 1862 and died 01/1910. There was another William Berry Shockley born c 1833 and he married Louisa Coffey and is known to have died 10/1871, and he was the younger William Berry Shockley's uncle as he was the brother of Wainwright Shockley, father of the younger WB. This older William Berry Shockley and Louisa Coffey also had a son William born c 1861 of which I have no additional information on and would like to ask if anyone else could provide any help on him. It is possible that the son of William Berry and Lousia Coffey Shockley is the actual husband of Eliza, and not the William Berry Shockley, son of Wainwright Shockley. Since Eliza is buried in Grainger Co., TN in Meadow Branch, I hope that one of the William Shockleys may also be buried there, or another family member of Eliza's. She does have at least one brother there, Addison "Adam" Coffey 1879-1938. A summary of questions: Marriage for Isom Sutton and Eliza J. Coffey Shockley (after 1911)? Eva Mae Shockley's husband Perry Dalton, any help on him? Lean Shockley, 13 in 1910, what happened to her? Etta Shockley, which Cook did she marry? William Berry Shockley born 1868 and died 1910. Was he the same William Shockley which Eliza married, she's with a Will in 1900 and is a widow in 1910 and it is thought that William Berry Shockley son of Wainwright Shockley was born in 1862 and died 1910, or is the Will actually William Shockley born c 1861 son of William Berry Shockley and Louisa Coffey? What Shockleys are in Meadow Branch Cemetery, Grainger Co., TN? If anyone can help on any of the above, clues, hints, suggestions, please let me know.
