Betty, I regret to say that we still do not know when the loose marriage records will be available on microfilm. A couple from the Genealogical Society of Utah (GSU) arrived in Rutledge to begin filiming in December 2005. Unfortunately a medical emergency sent them home to Utah before they could begin this project. Our representative with the Tennessee State Library and Archives (TSLA) continues to negotiate with GSU about whom they will send to replace the couple (who had already begun filming in neighboring Hawkins County) and when. We are all hopeful that within the next few months arrangements will be made to begin the filming. Once filming commences, it will be up to GSU and TSLA as to when the film will be available, but hopefully that would only be a few additional months. The marriage bonds and licenses (1796-1950) are ready to be filmed first and the volunteers at the Grainger County Archives have prepared indexes of those records. In the future it is possible that these indexes could be posted on a soon-to-be-created Grainger County Archives website. Please keep in mind that several years ago the TSLA microfilmed the old marriage books that survived (beginning in 1858), six boxes of loose marriages (1796-1866), and two published books of extracted marriages. All of these films should be available at most libraries that have microfilm as well as the LDS Family History Centers. These references can be utilized until the GCA loose records and indexes are microfilmed by LDS/GSU. In the meantime, the volunteers at the GCA will try to answer simple marriage queries, as long as we are not overwhelmed by requests. Please remember that we are continuing to prepare for microfilming the many remaining old records (currently Chancery Court and then County Court) with only two volunteers and limited time. Time spent answering large numbers of lookup requests will only slow down the whole process further.
