Greetings: I have a website devoted to this regiment at http://www.clark.net/pub/jcblal/tenn4cav/index.html and am in the process of transcribing the company rosters. I just finished Co. C, and noticed that this company included a significant number of men from Grainger Co. So, I would like to list them here, and anyone who has information to share about any of these individuals is most welcome to contact me, and I will add it to the website. James S. BRABSTON (b. 1837) He was killed in action June 14, 1863. I noticed some BRABSONs listed on the death index page of the Grainger Co. website, so I presume there's a good chance they're related. Frank CAMERON (b. 1837) Nelson CAMERON (b. abt 1845). Died July 1, 1863 in hospital at Nashville of measles. William CAMERON (b. 1843). (Can I assume that these 3 Camerons were brothers or cousins?) David CAMPBELL (b. 1843) James CAMPBELL (b. 1839) Died March 6, 1863 in hospital at Vicksburg, Miss of malaria. Presumably brother to David, as they both enlisted on the same day. Robert CARTER (b. 1840) Died March 1865 at Franklin, TN of disease. William COFFMAN (b. 1823). Blacksmith, was living in Liberty Hill as per the 1890 Veteran's census schedule (partially disabled from rheumatism). Winfrey COLLINS (b. 1832). Was living at Marshall Ferry in the 1890 Veteran's census. Wiley CURBY (b. 1840). Died Nov 10, 1864 of diarrhea while a POW at Florence, SC. William GOFORTH (b. 1840). Samuel P. GREENLER (b. 1843). The 1890 says that a Samuel GREENLEE of the 8th TN Infantry was living in Grainger Co., and the Grainger Co. death index lists Greenlee as dying in 1915 at age 70. Was the 1890 wrong, or could there have been two different individuals? Joseph HARBON (b. 1832) Living at Westerville in the 1890 Veteran's census. Jesse HODGE (b. 1841) Living at Doyal in the 1890 Vet's census. The Grainger Co. death index lists him dying in 1919 at age 77. James S. KIDWELL (b. 1827) POW, died Feb. 3, 1865 at Andersonville of scorbutus. Richard R. LACY (b. 1839) William H. LACY (b. abt 1844) POW, died Feb. 20, 1865, not sure where. James D. LONG (b. 1841) Killed in action Dec. 16, 1864 near Nashville. James MAYNES (b. 1839) Living in Doyal in the 1890 Vet's census, disabilities: malarial poisoning resulting in partial deafness, heart trouble, rheumatism, dislocated thumb. Marion MOODY (b. 1843) Joseph F. MORGAN (b. abt 1831). Musician, deserted Aug 6, 1864 at Decatur, AL. Jacob ODELL (b. 1838) George POTTER (b. 1834) William SMITH (b. 1841) John SPOON (b. 1843) Living at May Spring in the 1890 Vet's census. Disabilities: Hearing, piles. Robert TURNER (b. 1841) Spencer TURNER (b. 1841) Thomas WATSON (b. 1837) Living in Noelen in the 1890 Vet's census. Died 1918 at age 83 per the Death Index. Tighlman (sic) H. WATSON (b. 1845) Hezekiah WILLIAMS (b. abt 1830). Living in Hamblen Co. in the 1890 Vet's census. Willy Williams (b. 1841). He was born in Jefferson Co., not Grainger, but was living in Jarmine, Grainger Co. in the 1890 Vet's census, disabled by gunshot wound in R thigh. Most of these men enlisted in Nov/Dec. 1862 in Kentucky (Williamsburg, Barboursville), or in Jan 1863 at Rutledge. Some physical data on these Grainger Co. men - their median height was 5' 10", and their average height was also 5' 10" (this is significantly higher than the average for Union soldiers of 5' 8") Complexion: 61% "fair", 32% "dark", 6% "red". Eyes: 61% "blue", 16 % "black", 10% "hazel", 6% "grey", 3% each "yellow" and "dark". Hair: 39% "black", 35% "light", 13% each "sandy" and "dark". Sorry to use up so much bandwidth, but I thought at least a few of you might find this information of interest. Thanks Jessie Blalock jcblal@clark.net
