    1. A new online resource for Grainger County Researchers - Will Index
    2. Mike St. Clair/ST
    3. Many thanks to Kim Woodhouse, who prepared an index to wills for her personal research, and is sharing it with the rest of us. In fact, she found that none of her family left a will during the time frame involved, but was kind enough to pass her material on for the rest of us to benefit. For sure, if any of you have something like this, I'd be delighted to help it get online. Here is where you will find the new index: http://graingertn.us/detail_wills_1856-1917.php Now some details: This index covers wills during the period beginning November 1856 and going through October 1917, which are contained on the Family History Library film # 968,595. The film itself has an index which you can use to find the correct page number. This online index will let you know if a person of interest to you left a will during this time period in Grainger county. When I had completed the posting of this information, I was very excited to find that someone who is likely a part of my ancestral family had left a will that I didn't know about. So come Monday, it's off to the library to check out the will of Jesse Evans on film! I can't wait. Thank you, Kim. I hope many more will get some benefit, and that many will find something they have to share as well! Mike St. Clair Coordinator - Grainger County Tennessee - USGenWeb/TNGenWeb

WILSON's parents are thought to be WILLIAM VAUGHAN Jr., and 1st wife [unk], WILLIAM VAUGHAN Jr. ,m. 2nd MARGARET "PEGGY" WELL. After the death of the 1st wife, WILLIAM JR. moved [with WILSON] TO Hancock CO., TN. and Est. a mill on Little War Creek abt 1820. WILSON's family [minus Wilson] left the area and after a stay in Fayette Co., KY., they eventually settled in Indiana. Wilson's family [ that came to Indiana] included Stokley, Wylie, Wesley, Clinton, Mary and the mother NANCY BOWLEN, but no Wilson. Have'nt been able to find anything in Hawkins or Hancock Co., and since Grainger Co., was est. in 1796, thought maybe I would look here. Thanks..............Mobie McCammon 3702 W. 1. My brick Wall William Reeder
    2. Shirley Kovar
    3. I have a brick wall. I am searching for informaton on William Reeder (Reader) who in someway is connected to the Joseph H Clark & Nancy Ann Smith Clark line through their son William Clark. William Clark married a Naomi C ? (we think her maiden name might be Reeder). Their first born son was named William Reeder Clark and since so much of the tradition of naming their children with their mothers maiden name was done at that time. They were in Claiborne Co. Tenn during the middle & late 1830's. I have found a William Reeder on a 1830 Grainger Co. Tenn Census showing him with children Males- 2 under 5 years of age; 1 5 and under 10; 1 10 & under 15; 2 15 & under 20 and 1 40 & under 50. Females 1 under 5 years '; 1 5 & under 10; 1 30 & under 40 and 1 70 & under 80. Does anyone have an information on this family ? Names of children, spouse etc. Does anyone have a Naomi C ? born possibly in North Carolina. There were land transfers from William Clark & Naomi C to their son William Reeder Clark in Claiborne Co. during the 1830's. The sister to William Reeder Clark is my grgrgrgrandmother, by the name of Nancy Smith Clark who married Jesse William Dalton and were in Claiborne Co., and owned land there also. Any information will be very much appreciated. Shirley -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. Version: 7.0.338 / Virus Database: 267.9.4/57 - Release Date: 7/22/2005

    3. Interesting story, Linda. I was born and reared in Buda, Hays County TX, and knew a family named Mayes. There were also a Meeks family living in the Kyle area of Hays County around 1900, but I don't know how long they had been in the area. Every now and then, I go to the library in San Marcos to do some reserach on some of my surnames, and I'll keep you in mind when next I go there. I wanted to suggest, though, that if you haven't already done so, you may want to post a message to the Hays County message board. The URL is: http://www.rootsweb.com/~txhays/hays.htm You don't have to sign in or subscribe in order to use that messaage board. There is a link at the bottom of the page to surrounding counties, of which Bastrop County is one. 1. Daniel Mayes - John Mayes
    2. I am searching for Daniel Mayes, b. abt 1811 Tennessee, d. abt 1870 Hayes County, Texas. Married Nancy Meeks, b. 1808 Kentucky, d/o Suddeth Meeks and Winyann Smoot. Daniel had a brother named John Mayes. Daniel and Nancy had a dau., Sarah Ann Mayes, b. 12 Nov 1837 Missouri, m. Hugh Miller, Sr. (b. 18 Jan 1832 Missouri, d. San Saba, Texas). Sarah and Hugh had a dau., Fannie Miller ... my great grandmother, b. 9 May 1869 San Saba, Texas, d. 13 Jun 1959 Brownwood, Texas, m. William Ethel Hodge (b. 30 Jun 1866 Elgin, Bastrop County, Texas, d. 10 Jun 1928 New Mexico. Family legend says: David Sessom served in the Civil War as a Confederate news dispatcher in the 3rd Texas Infantry. He was suspected by some members of his community as being a spy for the Union army. Subsequently, David Sessom was accused of treason against the Confederacy, and later turned in by a man name Daniel Mayes.      David was hung as a traitor, and is buried in an unmarked grave in San Marcos, Hays County, Texas. His exact date of death, and location of his burial are not known.      Michael Sessom, David's father, swore revenge on Mayes for the death of his son, and soon after David's passing, Mayes did indeed meet his end. That Michael Sessom succeeded in enacting his revenge is the cause for some speculation . There are those who believe that Mayes was killed by Indians native to the area, as there was much tension between the displaced Indian tribes and the early settlers of Hays County, Texas.      After the death of David Sessom, Mary Meeks Sessom returned home to her parents, who in 1870, were living in Collin County, Texas. At the time of the census, her name is listed as Mary Meeks, suggesting that she took her maiden name back after her husband's death, or that they may not have been married at all. No documented proof has yet been found to verify a marriage date for David Sessom and Mary Meeks. Also of note, Mary and David's children were not living with their mother in 1870. Their where-abouts during this time period are unknown. However, by the 1880 census, Mary had remarried, and two of her three children by David were living in the household with their mother and stepfather. Mary's second husband, John William Miller, served as postmaster of Dilley, Frio County, Texas from 1890 to 1892.      It is sworn, however, by descendants of Michael Sessom, that he confessed to murdering Mayes shortly before his death. Am searching specifically for ANY information on Daniel Mayes but would be most grateful for any information on anyone in this family. Am also searching for photographs of same. Thanks, Linda McCallister

    1. Collins Family
    2. Has anyone done research on Collins? I have recently been told that my gggrandmother"s, Sarah Francis Savage, mother was Clary Collins born abt. 1817 who married William Savage in Grainger County. William's will does not leave anything to his wife (assume she is dead by 1852) but all of his minor children are assigned a guardian in the Union County court on October 7, 1852.. Clary is the daughter of David Collins born abt. 1800 in Virginia and Phoebe Unknown. David is the son of Moses Collins and Anna Botts. Does anyone have any info on this Collins' line. Veronica Fox
