Good Morning All: I have been in a 10 year pursuit to find out the surname of my paternal grandfather's father. After many years of paper and computer work, I convinced my father's brother to do the DNA testing. A 37 marker DNA test result shows that my uncle John matches 36 of 37 to the surname BRUCE. My gf was born in Rogersville, Hawkins Co., TN in August 1901. His mother was Amanda Elizabeth Russell, her father was Jeremiah "Jerry" Russell. In 1900 Amanda was living with her widowed father and three children, Eliza, Gertie, and William and all were carrying the surname Howerton, including Amanda. At no time have I located any marriage records. I have been in contact with several Howerton lines over the years and they agree that Amanda could possibly of had children by one of three Howerton men but no evidence has been found to say which one. It was my hope to locate which line of Howertons we descended from and now DNA shows none. This does not mean that the above children were not Howertons but it does mean that my gf was not fathered by a Howerton and it is his line I am working on. Amanda was born c 1869, was known to have been living in the Rogerville PO area in 1900. My gf, Walter Lee Parker was born in Rogersville as well. It is possible that George Parker, Walter's brother was also born in Rogersville in December 1903. I found Amanda in Morristown, Hamblen Co., TN by 1906 and having children by another man, Joseph Johnson Parker. Since I have no paper records of Walter between his birth and the 1910 census I do not have proof of his surname but he was buried as a Russell in 1963. Russell being Amanda's maiden name. If anyone has any knowledge of anyone researching the Bruce surname or other information on the people surnamed Bruce, please contact me. I have found several families of Bruce in Claiborne Co., TN and do not know where to start. I have also posted an email to the man who matched my gf 36 of 37 and will share his information with his permission when I get any. Thank you in advance for any and all help. Are there cemetery books for Grainger County? Almost all of my family and books relate to Claiborne and Union Counties, but I suspect that at least two couples and som of their children may have been buried in Grainger County. In particular, I am trying to find John and Anna (Walker) Munsey and William and Sabra (Walker) Munsey and any Munseys in the same cemeteries. They do appear to have used the "Munsey" spelling, although many of their relatives used "Muncy". Thanks. -- Phillip A. Walker phillip.walker@gmail.com

I am hoping SKS can help me with this family. The 1870 census, Page 3, 1st Civil District, Morristown, Grainger County, Tennessee is very difficult to read, but appears as follows: M. A. Whitt, 26, Cabinet Maker, born Virginia Elmyra J.(?), 27, Keeping House, born Virginia David S., 7(?) born Virginia Ross B.(?) 5 born Virginia Edward E., 2, born Tennessee The 1880 Census Mortality Schedule, 3rd Civil District, Hamblen County, Tennessee, shows M. A. Whitt as dying at age 39. The 1880 Census, 3rd Civil District, Hamblen County, Tennessee shows: Mira (Elmyra?) Whitt, 31(37?), Keeps House, born Virginia David (S.?), 14, born Virginia Eddie (Edward E.?), 11, born Tennessee Charley, 9, born Tennessee James, 6, born Tennessee Lizzie, 5, born Tennessee Nelson Taylor, 12, Mulatto Servant, born Tennessee She is living next door to Hugh Witt and family. David Sears Whitt is my grandfather. His death certificate shows his parents as James L. and Elmyra Whitt. Elmyra had 3 children born after M. A. Whitt's death. Might she have been married to James L. Whitt after M. A. Whitt's death? Where are they buried? Thank you in advance for any information on this family.
