Some time ago I got some information off the internet of a Valentine Reece, don't know if it is the same person, who lived in Carter County and according to this information he had daughters named Hannah and Mary. I think I still have this information somewhere. I would very much like to get in touch with this granddaughter to see if this John Valentine Reece is an ancestor of mine. Hello Ray, I noticed that you are researching REECE. My GG grandfather, John Glasgow married Elizabeth REECE in Grainger County in 1818 and moved to Stewart Co., TN about 1835 where they both died leaving 4 children that was raised in Stewart Co by sisters of Elizabeth, Hannah Reece and Mary (Reece) Purvis. I recognize some of these names as possibly belonging to my family. I know there is a Churchman who married into the family but can't put my hands on my files right now. There is a Preston Mitchell and I see the name Perrin. My ggg grandfather's second wife was a Perrin. I'll keep this email and get back to you after the holidays. I would guess that it's probably in the State archives in Nashville, as part of the proceedings of the General Assembly in 1799. The State Archives website is pretty good, though I don't think they have much in the way of transcribed documents or PDFs online. But there are indexes and information about the extent of the collection. You can write to them and for a fee they will research and copy documents for you. I've only done this looking for divorce records and birth records, so far, and the fee was $15.00. ROSS, IF YOU HAVE NO OBJECTIONS I WILL PRINT THIS FAMILY HISTORY AND PLACE IT IN THE GRAINGER COUNTY ARCHIVES. JAMES ----- Original Message ----- From: Ross Cameron<mailto:Ross.Cameron@nara.gov> To: TNGRAING-L@rootsweb.com<mailto:TNGRAING-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, April 26, 2005 1:51 PM Subject: Re: [TNGRAING-L] Dodson-Lebow families Hi "Cousin?" Paula, Louisa (Lebow) Johnson's parents John Lebow and Catherine Gray are my 5-greats grandparents. I am descended from their son Jacob W. Lebow who settled in 1838 in the area that became Lawrence County, Missouri. I have a lot of data on the Lebow and also the Johnsons. Some of Jacob's nephews, sons of Sanford and Louisa (Lebow) Johnson also came to Lawrence County in the 1850s and married some of my other relatives. Below is a revision of an article that I wrote for the Hawkins County Families, Vol. 2. I did not get it in the Grainger County Heritage book with my Cameron family history. You'll note that it references an article on Thomas Johnson and Martha Hutcheson in Hawkins County Families, Vol. 1. John and Catherine (Gray) Lebow Copyright 2003, Ross J Cameron John Lebow was an early settler in Hawkins county, Tennessee. He is believed by many to be the John Adam Lebo who was born 4 October 1761 in Berks county, Pennsylvania, the son of Isaac and Sabina Lebow. Isaac Lebow was born about 1736 in Reading, Berks county, Pennsylvania. He was the son of John Lebo, the immigrant and his second wife, Anna Margaret. John Lebo was born about 1683 in Alsace, France. His family was probably among the many French Huguenots who immigrated to Pennsylvania, John Lebo arriving sometime before 1718 when he was naturalized in Lancaster county. The immigrant John died in May 1759 in Reading, Alsace Township, Berks county, Pennsylvania. According to his will he was married twice. His first wife is not named but has been identified as Judith Hanotiaux, who was born in London, England. John married Catherine Gray, the daughter of Joseph and Mary Gray, who was born 1 November 1767. They had eleven children: John, born about 1782-84; Joseph, born about 1785, who married 17 November 1810, in Grainger county, Tennessee, to Nancy Stubblefield; Mary "Polly," born about 1790, who married 24 October 1811, in Grainger county to William Gray; Phoebe, born 2 January 1793, who married 20 September 1814, in Grainger county to Spencer Bassett, and died 27 March 1859; Isaac, born about 1794-1795, who married 4 December 1827, in Grainger county to Sarah Gray, the daughter of Robert Gray, and died in 1882 in Hawkins county; Jacob W., born 16 March 1796 [more below]; Lucinda, born about 1797-1799; Martha, born August 180?; Louisa, born 21 November 1807, who married 25 October 1819, in Grainger county to Sanford Johnson, the son of Thomas Johnson and Martha Hutcheson, who was born 22 November 1792, in Hawkins county, and died 24 December 1879, in Hawkins county; Lucreti! a! , who married 29 October 1840, in Grainger county to Albert Sullenbarger; and Sarah, who married 28 September 1842, in Grainger county to John Rice, Sr., and died in 1849. John Lebow was one of those men whom Governor John Sevier commissioned an ensign in the Hawkins County Regiment, on 15 August 1797. John and his young family moved a short distance across the county line into Grainger county, Tennessee, by 1810. John Lebow died 17 March 1840, in Grainger county, Tennessee and was buried in Meadow Branch Cemetery there. Catherine Lebow died 16 December 1847, also in Grainger county and was buried beside John at Meadow Branch Cemetery. Jacob W. Lebow, my great, great, great, great grandfather, married 20 August 1821, in Grainger county to Louisa Henderson. Louisa, the daughter of John Henderson and Rhoda Hale, was born 3 January 1804, in Claiborne county. Claiborne county was formed from land formerly in Hawkins and Grainger counties only three years earlier and that part of Grainger taken from Hawkins a few years before that, so the Henderson family may be Hawkins county pioneers, too. Jacob and Louisa left Grainger county in 1829 and moved to Putnam county, Indiana. After only seven years there, they moved on to southwest Missouri. They lived first for two years near Springfield, Greene county, Missouri, but in 1838 moved a little further west to the area that would become Lawrence county, Missouri in 1845. Here Jacob died on 25 February 1879. He was buried in Williams Cemetery, near Mount Vernon. Louisa died there, too, on 22 November 1880 and was buried beside Jacob at Williams Cemetery. Jacob and Louisa had twelve children, the four oldest born in Tennessee, the next two in Indiana, and the six youngest in Missouri: Harriet Rachel, born 19 June 1823; Amanda S. C., born 28 January 1824; John R. H., born 25 December 1827; Catherine Rhoda, born about 1829; Lucenna Clorinza "Cenie," born 25 October 1832; Jacob W. L., Jr. "Doe," born 8 April 1835; Francis Marion (twin), born 14 November 1836; Joseph Lafayette (twin), born 14 November 1836; Masten Monroe, born 8 April 1839; Louisa A., born 25 November 1841; Virginia Lucothie "Poke," born 9 October 1844; and Missouri Jane, born about 1847. Harriet Rachel Lebow married 25 August 1840, in that part of Barry county, Missouri, which would soon become Lawrence county, to John Williams Moore, the son of John Moore and Elizabeth Williams. John Williams Moore was born 12 February 1815, in Hawkins county. They had no doubt known each other in Hawkins county before both settled in the same area in Missouri in 1838. John Williams and Harriet Rachel (Lebow) Moore had twelve children, ten of whom lived to adulthood and married: Ximera Malvina, born 10 July 1841; Gallahugh Blackburn "Black", born 26 January 1843; Louisa Elizabeth, born 18 December 1844, who died young; Jacob Greenfield, born 7 March 1846; John Williams, Jr., born 19 February 1848; Mary Ann Tennessee, born 8 March 1850; Martha Louise, born 8 April 1852; George Marion, born 13 August 1854; James Logan, born 10 October 1856; Albert Alcer (or Anderson), born 13 December 1860; Missouri, born about 1862 or 1863, who died young; and William Grant, born 31 A! u! gust 1864. John Williams Moore died 24 December 1895, at his home near Mount Vernon, Lawrence county, and was buried at nearby Williams Cemetery. Harriet died there on 22 September 1907, and was buried beside her husband. Amanda S. C. Lebow married about 1842-1843 to Squire Asbury Gardner, who was born 16 December 1814, in Kentucky. They had eight children: Fredonia J.,born 15 September 1845; Louisa C., born 8 May 1847; Madorah A. "Dora," born about 1848-1850; Martha Washington "Mattie," born 3 November 1851; Josiah A., born about 1853-1854; Jeanette B. "Nettie," born 1857; William T.,born April 1860; and John Thomas, born 29 April 1864. Squire Gardner died 23 August 1882, and was buried at Old South Bend Cemetery, near Mount Vernon, Lawrence county. Amanda died 3 July 1913, in Springfield, Greene county, Missouri, and was buried at IOOF Cemetery, in Mount Vernon. John R. H. Lebow married 18 Jul 1850, in Lawrence county, to Mary Jane Gullett, the daughter of John Gullett and Letha Moore Brackeen, born about 1832 in Tennessee. They had six children: Franklin F., born 13 August 1851; John S., born 30 March 1853; Jacob N., born 21 March or September 1855; Letha Cordelia "Delia," born 17 December 1857; Sarah Louisa, born 11 February or April 1860; and John R. H., Jr., born 3 Dec 1862, two months after his father died on 3 October 1862, in Mount Vernon while serving in Company C, 76th Regiment of Enrolled Missouri Militia, of pneumonia or typhoid fever. John, Sr., was buried at Old South Bend Cemetery, near Mount Vernon. Catherine Rhoda Lebow married 29 July 1847, in Barry county, Missouri, to Francis Coleman Williams, the son of John Williams and Abigail Smith, who was born 15 February 1815, in Maury county, Tennessee. [See the John and Margaret (Grantham) Williams and John and Abigail (Smith) Williams story elsewhere in this volume.] Mr. Williams was a widower with one child from his previous marriage. He and Catherine Rhoda had six childrvm county, Indiana. After only seven: John S., Jacob Lebow, George Washington, Joseph Lafayette, Harvey Madison, and an unnamed infant. She died by 1862 but her burial place is unknown. Mr. Williams married a third time and had four more children before he died 13 Apr 1876. He is buried at Roberts Cemetery, near Mount Vernon. Lucenna Clorinza "Cenie" Lebow married 1 November 1849, in Lawrence county to James William Patton, the son of John Patton and Sarah Yates, who was born 28 July 1828, in Bedford county, Tennessee. They had ten children: John Eberly, born 21 July 1851; Mary Jane, born 28 April 1854; Lucretia Melvena, born 17 September 1856; Sarah Elmira "Sallie," born 19 October 1858; George Washington (twin), born 8 February 1862; Martha Alice (twin), born 8 February 1862; Harriet Iza Dory "Hattie," born 17 October 1864; James William "Will", Jr., born 9 December 1867; Jacob Kern "Jake," , born 2 July 1871; and Lucenna Perly, born 15 November 1873. "Doe" Lebow, Jr., married 14 January 1858, in Lawrence county to Malinda Jane Davis, the daughter of James W. Davis and Syrena Witherspoon, who was born about 1840-1841, in Kentucky. They had five children: Louvenia E., born 14 December 1858; William F. Sigel, born 4 March 1861; Barney Wilburn, born 15 December 1866; Stella, born 1 November 1871; and Ada Ataska, born 17 December 1879. They were divorced after Malinda moved to Harrison, Boone county, Arkansas. Jacob died 15 July 1898, at Mount Vernon and was buried at Mount Vernon City Cemetery. The above is a small amount of the information on the first few generations that I have on these families. I have traced many of the descendants of the above Lebow family. vm county, Indiana. After only sevHarriet Rachel (Lebow) Moore was my great, great, great grandmother. My other connections to some of Jacob Lebow's children are as follows: Catherine Rhoda's husband Francis Coleman Williams was the brother of my 3-greats grandfather Samuel Smith Williams. Lucenna Clorinza's husband James W. Patton was the brother of my 2-greats grandfather Samuel Carroll Patton. Louisa A.'s husband was her Lebow cousin. There are additional family connections with later generations. How do you fit into the Johnson-Lebow family? I also have a slight connection to the Dodsons. My great, great, grandfather James Cameron married as his second wife Rachel M. (Grove) Dodson, widow of James Dodson. James and Katherine (Clark) Cameron had seven children: William M., 1843; Nelson Cameron, 1845; James Taylor, 1848; Hardin, 1851; John A., 1853; Mary C., 1856; and Tennessee, 1860. After Katherine's death, James married in 1868 to Rachel M. (Grove) Dodson, widow of James M. Dodson with five children: John R., Tempy G., William James, F. J., and Nora. James and Rachel Cameron had no children.
