Margaret. I am researching David Shelton who married Martha J. Henderson July 10,. 1844 in Grainger County. My GG Grandparents. Any connection? Carolyn
Carolyn, Of the Shelton's I can trace, they are gone from Grainger, TN by about 1818 and go into MO. There is another Shelton line that remained in the area for a longer time period. The line that stayed is the "Ralph Shelton" line. My line seems to be coming out of the Albemarle, VA area and is referred to as the "New Kent" line of Sheltons as per DNA testing. George Noe, born ca 1779, was the son of Joseph Noe and wife, Caty, who came to Grainger Co., Tn from Orange Co., NC. By 1830, he is living in Lincoln Co., Tn. He was a brother to my ancestor, David Noe. Grace McGinnis
Gail, I have no information on the Collins before Stanford. The Heltons and Noes came from Orange Co., NC, the Collins may have too. Grace

Grace, You don't know where in North Carolina the Collins family came from do you? At first I thought they were descended from the early Grainger County Collins who came like my Howells and Ivys and the Holts came from Orange County, North Carolina. Before anybody asks <grin>I don't know anthing much about these Collinses except for Jane O. Collins Howell who married my 4th great grandmother Jane Howell Ivy's brother Henry Howell back in Orange County. Jane O's father was John Collins according to an early Grainger County land record..I do not know who John Collins wife was (and as far as I know nobody else does either <smile>) The Stanford Collinses came later. I looked in Chatham County on the grounds people tend to move around together. I guess these Collinses could have come from Orange County too and just came later. Gail
Grace, you said "Several years ago, > I corresponded with a Collins descendant > living in Colorado and have some information > on this family if you need it." Arlene I have information on this family too, but Grace probably has better information. So far about all I have on either the Collins or the Harbins is the information in Gone But Not Forgotten and you have book. I keep meaning to get to the Courthouse to do some marrriage lookups. I have a million of these. I think as soon as we get caught up here, I will just move to a motel in Rock and spend a week at either the courthouse or the library. I am NOT sure what the DH's reaction to that would be. Grace, I was writing to you, but apparently you already know who Harbard's father was. I do not know who Pharaba or your Elizabeth's parents were. There were some Brewer wills at the Chatham County GenWeb archives, but nothing helpful. Usually occupational surnames are very difficult to research, but the Chatham County Coopers have really convenient names, Harbard, Sylvia, Fleece. For some reason when I was a little girl I knew that our neighbor, "Poppy"'s middle name was Fleece. I thought this was very amusing "baa baa black sheep have you any wool?" Not that Poppy was in any sense of the word a "black sheep". He was one of the finest men I have ever known. (Some of the Morristown "immigrants" were sort of black sheep. <grin>) Gail > > Have copy of will of James Cooper, father of Harbard Cooper > b 1804. > Chatham Co., NC Will Book C, p223 > Will of James Cooper dated 15 Feb 1835 > names wife, Katherine Cooper, 3 sons & two daughters- > Sophia Bowlin, William Cooper, Herbert Cooper, > Williamson Cooper and Silva Kirksey > Wit: Rhoda Cooper, Mary Ann Hobson, Lucien Turner > Pro August term 1848 > > Sylvia Cooper married Elijah Kirksey in Chatham Co., NC. > They were briefly in Tennessee, Millie Medlin, daughter of my Banister > Medlin, married their son, James Cooper Kirksey in Jefferson Co. > In 1870, they were in Fountain Co., Ind. > > Grace > > > ==== TNGRAING Mailing List ==== > To UNSUBSCRIBE please send your message to tngraing-l-request@rootsweb.com > >
