Listers, i'm researching MOORE. now i lust leaned that its a possibility that my great grand parents name was O'MOORE or OMOORE, or O'MOHR, anyone on this list have that name?. I sure never came across that spelling. i'm starting to research these spellings. my grand father's brother THOMAS MOORE told his son our original name was OMOORE, or O'MOHR, an IRISH name. THOMAS said his parents came from IRELAND to U.S.A. during the POTATO FAMINE, of 1846-50. note: this is in KNOXVILLE,TN. That info threw a monkey wrench in my research. if this really pans out to be true. thank you, Ray Moore, visit my pages: http://tippytnn.topcities.com/moore508/moore.htm DNA done. Good Morning, I guess I should know better than to read these emails at work. Yesterday when Gail mentioned Owens, I thought Yes!! I remember that name from one of my lines. when I got home last night, I was disappointed and feeling a little stupid.... Owen is a first name. So if anyone has Owen P Rhoads or Mary Hall Rhoads in your research, I would appreciate some help with them. Thank You, Theresa "Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work." --Thomas A. Edison, US Inventor (1847 - 1931) -----Original Message----- From: Gail Roorda [mailto:possum2@softhome.net] Sent: Monday, January 23, 2006 6:36 PM To: TNGRAING-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [TNGRAING-L] Owens and Mayes Good, if Theresa is descended from your Owens than she will have a source. <smile>. Did you see my posting to Regan re Edward Mayes ancestry. I think that we Mayes researchers need some probate information on Liggen. The information I had was that Liggen died in Claiborne County. And that since the records in Claiborne County only go back to about 1859 that it was impossible to identify all Easter and Liggen's children. I am pretty convinced the the Easter "May" aged 74 listed in Anna (Mayes) Solomon's household is Easter (Daniel) Mayes. Anyway I don't think Easter died in Claiborne County and I am wondering whether Liggen died in Claiborne county either. Maybe he died in Grainger County and there is some confusion with the younger Liggen of Claiborne County. I guess Esther (Easter) could have moved back to Grainger to live with a daughter...??? But I am JUST wondering Gail ----- Original Message ----- From: "William Owens" <wjowens60@msn.com> To: <TNGRAING-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, January 23, 2006 17:45 Subject: Re: [TNGRAING-L] Owens and Mayes > Hi Gail > > Yes, I am still on the list just changed my email address a few years ago > when I went DSL. > > Robert and Nancy Mayes Owens are my great great grand parents. Good, if Theresa is descended from your Owens than she will have a source. Hi Gail Yes, I am still on the list just changed my email address a few years ago when I went DSL. Robert and Nancy Mayes Owens are my great great grand parents. Robert was born in Edgecombe Co. NC September 1927. Robert's father a mother Alpheus and Tempy Owens moved with family from Edgecombe Co. NC to Grainger Co. Tennessee around 1834-1836. Some of Alpheus and Tempy Owens children were born in Edgecombe Co. NC and the rest born in Grainger Co. Tennessee. All of Robert and Nancy Mayes children moved from Grainger Co. Tennessee between 1870-1883 time frame. The older children of Robert and Nancy Owens moved to Springfield Missouri area. Then in 1883, the older children return from Springfield Mo. to Grainger Co.and moved their Parents to Turner Missouri. At that time the remaining children of Robert and Nancy moved to Springfield Missouri area. Yes, there is a connection with Kinder and other families from Grainger Co. Tennessee. Good Morning Gail, Whew! there sure has been a lot of activity on this message list...just wondering myself how I am going to keep all this info straight. I would love to have a copy of "Sharon's email with helpful transcription of the Owens tombstones in Greene County Missouri" They might be part of my Owens line from Missouri. (It was in Edward Mayes file!) . I will try to get tit scanned this evening. Surely there is SOMETHING in this file I can get rid of, but what?? Sharon's email with helpful transcription of the Owens tombstone's in Greene County Missouri??? Grace's helpful information from Priscilla Kidwell's work? Julia Caroline's entry in Graniger County vitals..Gail you COULD throw this away. You NOW have the book! You could also throw any Larry's post on herirs of Edward deceased since you now have a copy of said document! It would be easier to find the real stuff if I did clean out this file! I looked through the file three times before I found the document!! Regan, Sam (and anyone else who is interested. This information is from my files on the Edward Mayes family. Please take the information that Edward was the son of Liggen and Easter (Esther) Daniel Mayes with a degree of skepticism. He may be, but Regan says she is not sure of that and I can find no information that directly says he is. I have no exact DODs for either Nancy "Nannie" Greenlee or Sarah Roach. Nancy was apparently dead by the time the 1840 census was taken. Sarah died bebetween the birth of son William and 1860. Everyone alos might want to be cautious of the designation of Henry County, Virginia as Edward's birthplace if Edward was not Liggen and Easter's son. Group: I should mention that the fact I noted the men on the 1830 Grainger Co., TN census were indicated to be indian has nothing to do with my work. I am looking for any ancestry for Nero Collins who is my own ancestor. I have been unable to tie him in with any known Collins families other than his daughter Mary married Levi Perry. Levi is descended from Griffin Collins, Sr. and later in life Nero's widow Martha and some of her children went to Wise Co., VA to live. Since I have found NO direct relationship between the Wise Co., VA Collins families and Nero I look for any clues. Martha Wright, Nero's wife was born in Grainger Co., TN. Levi Perry, Martha and Nero's sil was born in Grainger Co., TN. His parents were Nathan Perry and Mary Collins Perry with this Mary Collins being a possible daughter of old Griffin. Any help appreciated. Nero's dates c 1820 to after 1848. I had kept the Aaron, Levi, and Moses information in case Nero may tie into them. His date of birth would put him in contention there. Good Morning Group: I have been reading the posts on the legislative petitions and the follow-up posts refering to some of the listed petitioners. Having been a victim of Katrina my research time has been cut to the bone and then some so I have been copying many of the posts into my FTM notes on the individuals involved for hopefully later work. I need to ask about Moses Collins, Aaron, and Levi Collins. Does anyone know if they were related? Three men with the same names are listed in the 1830 Grainger Co., TN census and the three listed there are indicated to be indian. Dear Fellow researchers (and especially SHAR) Sam L., Regan and whoeveer on the list is descended from Nelson Roach. I was doing a lookup on the household of Julia Caroline and Hamilton Roach to see if I could get a little closer idea of their ages. When we last discussed this household somebody di a lookup for us. On the same page as Hamilton, James and John Roach I found the following entry. Mays, William Head born December 1852 47 married 27 years to Sarah C. ? (Should have gotten a larger print out <grin>) born May 1855 45 Alice J. daughter born June 1880 19 William N. Son born May 1885 15 Clyde A. Son born September 1887 12 Benjamin H. Son born June 1889 11 Pearl V. daughter born May 1894 6 I think this William is possibly or even probably (since he is living among the Roaches) Edward's son by his second marriage to Sarah Roach. This gives us a few more clues in case you still want to know what happened to "little" William. I guess he isn ow nearly middle aged William..my DH once asked why are you all calling him little William. (I think he thought that William would by now be William long deceased.) Gail
COOL. Gail, good detective work, yes, I'm still curious about "Little" Willam, was this the 1900 Census? Regan Have found the document. BTW, we refer to this James as "James G." as there are other James > MAYES about Grainger Co. and Tennessee and it's not hard to get them > confused. I know I am descended from one of the other James myself. <grin> Lest this confuse everyone since I have been talking about Sherrod. I descend from Sherrod through his daughter Jane "Jenny" Mayes Ivy (Ivey). My line is: Sherrod and Elizabeth, Benjamin and Jane Mayes Ivy, John Hamilton Ivy I and his second wife Isabella Catherine Hazelwood Ivy, John Hamilton Ivy II and his fiirst wife Amanda Long, Rufus Patty Ivy and his wife Elsie Jane Roberts (as I said I am blessed that my mother is still living so I won't post her name) me <smile> James is NOT descended from Sherrod <smile> It has been years since I posted information (or NON information) on James (or whined about James) and I am sure everyone is waiting with bated breath to hear about Jim again. <smile> Yes, Regan I know you are descended from James G. Actually I have sent this transcript to the list before. The repeat is for you and Sam L. Although I am always grinching about my budget I feel mailing things I have to fellow researchers is within my means <grin> I would be glad to send you a photocopy I can also scan the document. The DH is working on a congreagational report right now and is using the scanner. Also I have to FIND said document. (Don't freak! It is here someplace.) I never ever throw anything away at least nothiong of ANY genealogical significance. It should be in my Edward file, but I don't find it offhand. My Edward/Nancy Greenlee/Sarah Roach file and John Mayes/Nancy Mayes/Jane May files are very thick. Thicker than some of the files on people I actually descend from due to research into the two John Mayes's which came up on the list a couple of years ago. This is WHY I am looking through my Edward file I'm in touch with another descendant of one of James G.'s children > (through James' son Jerry), and we're still not sure who Edward's parents > were. I'm still working on documenting Eli, so I haven't really moved > back to the James G. generation yet -- or Edward. I have that Edward was Liggen and Easter's son. But I am wondering whether we have NOT all just ASSUMED this. Nowhere in this file can I find ANY actual proof that this is so. Actually I had wondered whether the Henry Mayes who married another Greenlee daughter was Liggen and Easter's son, too. I have no prrof of this and appparently I have no proof that Edward was a son! Nowhere is this file can I find any proof EVEN from published materials that SAYS Edward was Liggen and Easter Mayes SON! The Greenlee book says that Mary "Polly" Greenlee Mayes was Easter and Liggen's daughter and that Phebe Mayes Greenlee was Liggen and Easter's daughter, but the section on Nancy "Nanie" Greenlee Mayes does NOT say Edward was Liggen and Easter (Esther) Daniel Mayes SON. I think he quite likely was, but NOWHERE can I find anything that says so.... I will look for Edwatd Mayes, deceased heirs document this evening and then get back to you.
