    3. Here is the info from the stone, in case that helps: In Memory of My Darling Wife Edna Camberlain BORN Oct.29, 1871 DIED July 3, 1890 "In memory of my darling wife. My wife! How fondly shall thy memory be, Enshrined within the chambers of my heart! Thy virtuous worth was only known to me, And I can feel how sad it is to part." The stone stands a little over 3 l/2 ft. tall. When we first started cleaning up the cemetery, the stone was off it's base and flat on the ground, with the spire on top broken off. It has since been reset and put back together. I don't know if this is a clue or not, but the grave could be considered to be located in the Cardwell Plot. I have not found an Edna connected to that family. It could be that Edna was connected to a family that came to Texas with "the Cardwell contingent" that left the Powder Springs area of Grainger County in July 1855. I know there were Watkins and Copenhavers in the group. At the time they migrated to Texas, most of Anthony Cardwell's children were already married, and the entire families came along. If memory serves, and it might not, Isaac Watkins married a Margaret "Peggy" Chamberlain, and two of their children married Anthony's sons. Their mother's name was Mary C. "Polly" Perrimon/Perryman, born Claiborne County TN. Edna might have been a Watkins, but I can't prove that, either. Hope this helps somebody. Betty Texas ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bobby J. 3. Bob, Thanks again. I'll keep this and see what I can find. I don't know anything about Liberty Cemetery, but I am familiar with Bunton located between Dale and Lytton Springs, and my g-g-grandparents are buried there. 3. Thanks, Bob. I found Chamberlains in Caldwell County, but none with a connection to Edna. Without her maiden name, I've been able to get nowhere. She's one of only three buried in marked graves that I have not been able to learn a thing about. Betty Te xas ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bobby J. 3. Betty, I don't know off hand just who Edna Chamberlain is, but I'll keep looking. As for James T. Chamberlain, he moved from Grainger Co., TN, to Johnson Co., MO in 1838. It was there that he married Sarah Runnels Barton, the niece of the state's late first U.S. senator David Barton, in 1841. After a decade in MO, James T. moved his family to Travis Co., TX, in 1849. Later, they moved on to Karnes Co., TX, and to Round Rock, Williamson Co., in 1864. The following year, the Chamberlains relocated to Burnet Co. They removed to Caldwell Co. in 1878, but later moved back to Burnet Co., where they died (James T. in 1889 and Sarah R. in 1905). There were a number of Chamberlains living in Caldwell Co., TX, at one time or another. I'll see what I can find. Bob C. 3. Dear Deborah, The children may or may not have been adopted. I should have thought of the children being Emmeline's right away. Years ago when I first began researching, the first census I ever looked at was the 1880 Atchison County census (my neighbor owned a copy). I was looking for the household of my great grandparents William and Catherine O'Herin Gaffney (my paternal grandmother's parents). I passed the household of my grandfather's stepfather Andrew Whelan and was idly looking at the household. (I was pretty vague about my ancestors <grin> I had never been really interested in family history. I have a degree in history, but for some reason I thought of history as the history of OTHER folks and not my folks. I am now sorry about that for many of the Morristown folks were still alive when I was young as well as older members of the Irish famine immigrant side of the family. (<grin> not the original Irish immigrants <teehee> I am not THAT old) and I am sure they all had stories to tell. I referred to FAMILY history as "the begats" <grin>. My neighbor dragged me into this. <smile>) To continue... <grin> I realized with a start that the wife listed was NOT Andrew's first wife, Catherine O'Connor but my own great grandmother Hannorah Houlahan Ryan Whelan. Glancing down the list of names I encountered "Mike" aged 7 listed as the "son" of the head of household. (When informed of this my father said, Gail I thought she married again when Dad was about 7." "Sure she did, Daddy Grandpa's oldest half brother Peter was listed as 4 and the "infant" in the household would have been Charlie." (Both my parents were "hiding behind the door when the information was passed out/" <grin>) Although a very green newbie I had taken classes online. (This was, of course, BEFORE the 1880 whole name census index was compiled by the LDS church.) I looked at my neighbor and said, "Mike was my grandpa" and then "I guess this explains why people can't find these little "fellows" (stepchildren) on the 1880 soundex. <grin> By the way my grandfather was also listed as just "Mike" in Andy Whelan's household the 1876 Missouri state census. I guess Nora didn't marry again <grin> when he was "about 7" Anyway the Stephens children may have gone either by the name of Stephens or Long. They could have been called Long even if they were not formally adopted. I have found that census takers jsut listed children by the names they were called <grin> without inquiring too closely into formal adoptions or <smile> sometimes by the names they didn't "go by" just assuming that all the children in the household were the father's. This has NOT been my experience in general with either the 1880 Grainger or Hmblen County census which USUALLY listed chilldren as stepchildren and by their correct names. <duh> I have no excuse for not having picked up on the fact that that the children were Emeline's. As I told you I knew Emmeline was married before because the marriage records said Stephens and not Marsh. However, it has been a long time since I "worked on" (or thought about) the Longs. I have already done some preliminary work and have encountered some potential problems. <grin> Gail ----- Original Message ----- From: "DEBORAH ONEAL" <DRTONEAL@msn.com> To: <TNGRAING-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, January 27, 2006 06:00 Subject: Re: [TNGRAING-L] Long, Marsh, Stephens > Glad you discovered the Digital Images!! 3. Sandy, I haven't found this particular Tabitha, although Tabitha was a name commonly used in my line. Another similar name is Talitha which doesn't seem to be a misprint and is also common in my line. On 10 Feb. 1816, Eli Hodges bought 140 acres in Grainger Co. at the head of Hodge's Creek and on the South side of Holston River for $300. The seller was Jacob Wilson and witnesses were Henry Boatman, Ninian Riggs and Jesse Prichard. The land was on Rigg's line to Welcom Hodge's corner and then to a conditional line between Ambrose Hodges and Henry Haggard land's. This land was originally granted to Henry Haggard by North Carolina on 30 October 1794 and was grant #215. 10/30/1794 Grant #215 to Henry Haggard and Ambrose Hodges for 300 Acres on South side of the Holston in Hawkins County. 1804 Tax List -- Captain Samuel Bunch [Waterways listed: P. 3. David Bolin born 1780 in VA, married Polly Rayle in Grainger March 12, 1804. I am interested in any Bolins in Grainger at that era, thank you for any information on the Bolins there. Rosemary Evon

    3. Dear Deborah, No, I think that Mary A. was probably Mary Alice and would be the child listed as Alice in the 1880 census (right age). I think all of the three Stephens (or Long) were still living in 1900. William "Willie" Stephens, Mary Alice, Stephens, Dora Sephens, Martha Lous Long, and Ada Long would be the 5 children still living in 1900. (Dochia Long died in 1899) would be the 5 children still living. I do not know whether the other child who had died was either a Stephens or a Long. I believe that a child born of either marriage would have been buried in Economy. In either case both sets of the child's great grandparents would have been buried in Economy. I couldn't find a burial for such a child listed. I also checked the WPA records. When the Hamblen County genealogy society transcribed the cemetery they cross referenced the burials found by the WPA with the stones they found. In general the tombstones found by the WPA which were missing when the cemeteries were retranscribed are listed at the end of the cemetery transcriptions, but I just wanted to make sure... 3. Glad you discovered the Digital Images!! They are in many cases better than the microfilm ones.. This discovery does beg another question--with the info that John W Long not being married in 1870--Who are the parents of William Long aged 15 in the 1880 census. The answer seems to also be on the same page with J A Stevens and wife Emaline with William aged 5 and Mary A 11/12. Guessing that William Long was William Stevens and was "adopted by John when he married Emaline? Mary would be one of the 7 children born to Emaline and not living by 1900?? Debbie ----- Original Message ----- From: Gail Roorda<mailto:possum2@softhome.net> To: TNGRAING-L@rootsweb.com<mailto:TNGRAING-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, January 26, 2006 3:45 PM Subject: Re: [TNGRAING-L] Long, Marsh, Stephens Dear Deborah, If you are still interested in further information on Emmeline's children. <smile> William, Mary Alice and Dora would have been EMMELINE'S children by her first marriage to James A. Marsh. I had amy Long information all sealed up in a mailing envelope to send to a fellow researcher and then I remembered that I had not found out what happened to John W.'s "first wife" ??<sgrin> (I really hated to unseal this envelope <smile>) so I decided to take another look at the 1870 Grainger County census. This would NOT be the first time I ever saw this census. <grin> and I should have realized that John W. had NO first wife. Years ago when I first began researching I rented the 1870 Grainger County census. I went to my neighbor's and put the film on her microfilm reader and started trying to "view" it. She was (calmly) working on some of her own research (onstantly interrupted by me as I kept running in and yelling at her <grin>). First I encountered the part where the members of the household are mostly only identified by their initials. (This led to a tirade patiently listened to by my neighbor). Eventually I figured out that the households that I was interested in (or at least interested in at that time) were living in the part of Grainger County that became Hamblen in 1870 and they were identified by their full names, but hat THIS section of the census had obviously been written in invisible ink. <grin> I eventually succeeded in transcribing the households that I was most interested in and over the years I did buy some Grainger and Hamblen County CDs and one film the 1860 Grainger County census although I don't have a reader. I did NOT buy the 1870 Grainger County, Tennessee census in ANY form. Being terminally cheap I did discover that my genealogy society library in St. Joe had the 1870 Grianger County census and since the ONLY reader I could actually READ this census on was the really good reader/printer at the NWMGS which was not always available since it was nearly always in use by people who wanted photocopies...I have NO objection to writing thisngs out although photocopies are very nice (also the quarters do add up <smile>) it was impossible to read this census on any of the other microfilm readers. <smile>) I really THOUGHT that IF John W. had been missing from Nick and Jane Long's household in 1870 I WOULD have looked looked for a marriage..<hmmm> Rather than dragging the notebook of census transcriptions done years ago off the shelf< I decided to just go online and look at the census. For the first year or so after I got online census acess I NEVER looked at the 1870 Grainger County, Tennessee on the grounds that a digitized image would be less readable than the original. Not so they are considerably better..(maybe they are made from a better film or an "enhanced" version????) Hmmm...here we have John still listed in his parents household and glancing down HERE <grin> we have the household of J. A. Stephens...wife Emeline hmmm as I told you Emmeline's name was listed as Stephens on the marriage record. Since the Longs, Stephnens, and Emmeline's parents were buried in Economy, I looked for a J. A. Stephens of the right age. (James A. Stephens July 21, 1847-20 September 1874). One of my favorite researchers <smile> did a lookup "bond only" James Stephens/"Evaline Marsh 13 October 1864. ----- Original Message ----- From: "DEBORAH ONEAL" <DRTONEAL@msn.com<mailto:DRTONEAL@msn.com>> To: <TNGRAING-L@rootsweb.com<mailto:TNGRAING-L@rootsweb.com>> Sent: Thursday, January 12, 2006 10:57 Subject: Re: [TNGRAING-L] Re: Another try > Thanks. 3. I said <grin> "A little short too. <smile>I don't know where the missing children were." I now think my information was NOT all that "short". <smile> As far as I can see Dochia, Martha Lou Long Hodge and Ada Long Hazelwood were the only children born to John W. and Emmeline.and Dochia died before 1900. Aparently Emmeline's children by James A. Stephens were still living in 1900. These children would have been William "Willy" born circa 1865, Mary Alice? (this child was llisted as Mary A. in 1870 and Alice in 1880) born circa 1969 and Dora born circa 1872. Emmeline would have lost another child in addition to Dochia if the 1900 census entry was correct. There are some fairly large gaps between these children. I guess it could have been John W. and Emmeline's child...however, I think a child by either marriage would have most likely been buried in Economy, but I couldn't find this child listed in the current cemetery transcription. 3. Dear Deborah, If you are still interested in further information on Emmeline's children. ----- Original Message ----- From: "DEBORAH ONEAL" <DRTONEAL@msn.com> To: <TNGRAING-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, January 12, 2006 10:57 Subject: Re: [TNGRAING-L] Re: Another try > Thanks. 3. A possible migration was from Grainger Co., TN to Cole/Miller Co., Missouri. My g-grandfather was a George Long, b. 1823 in Cole Co., MO. His daughter, Mary Jane Long, married Hardy Shadwick in 1862 in Miller Co., MO. Hardy Shadwick's parents were married in Grainger Co., TN in 1822. My guess is based only on the common given name "Hardy" and Grainger Co., TN. But who knows...? Hope this helps. jfarris@execpc.com ----- Original Message ----- From: "Larry Mills" <lempga@bellsouth.net> To: <TNGRAING-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, January 25, 2006 1:34 PM Subject: Reuben Long > Does anyone know anything about Reuben Long? > > He shows up in the 1830 census.
