Ancestors of Hardy Long Generation No. 1 Hardy Long, born abt. 1787 in North Carolina; died August 25, 1854 in Bean Station, Grainger County, TN. He married (1.) Rachel Cash October 05, 1813 in Sommerset, Pulaski County, KY. She was born abt. 1802 in Wilkes County, NC. She was the daughter of James Cash and Hannah ?? Notes for Hardy Long: NOTES: Hardy volunteered in October of 1814 for the War of 1812. He served under a captain Joseph Rich's Company, Samuel Branches Regiment, Tennessee Infantry Brigade of the Tennessee Militia. His rank was that of Private. His term was for six months and he was honorably discharged 6 months later. After being discharged Hardy and Rachel lived in the vicinity of Bean Station, Grainger County, TN, until he died. Hardy was 5 ft. 10 inches tall, fair complexion, light hair and blue eyes. He was a farmer by occupation. Hardy and Rachel were married by Rev. Bayles Williams, on Oct. 5, 1813, in a town near Sommerset, Pulaski County, KY. (according to Pension records that Rachel filled out). Hardy and Rachel are listed in the 1830 Pulaski County, KY census: White males: 1-under 5 yrs. 1-5 and under 10 1-10 and under 20 1-30 and under 40 White Females: 1-under 5 yrs. 1-5 and under 10 1-20 and under 30 Note: Dorothy was born abt.1826, and m. Thomas Bird in Grainger County Feb. 14, 1840. She should be the White Female under 5 yrs. The 1830 census kinda of bears this out. Apparently Dorothy Long is married and has moved out, because she is not listed in the 1850 census with the Long family. 1860 Grainger County, TN census Dist. #3: Long, Rachel 62 FW NC Widow Francis 17 MW TN Emily 14 FW TN Source: 1830 Pulaski County, KY Census 1850-1860 Grainger County, TN census Dist. #3 Copy of Claim of Widow for Service Pension, War of 1812 Copy of Declaration of a Widow for Pension, War of 1812 Notes for Rachel Cash: NOTES: Rachel is listed as a widow in the 1860 Grainger County, TN census Dist. #3, with Francis and Emily still at home. Rachel also refers to her application as on file for Military Bounty Law, for evidence of her marriage to Hardy. Betty, One other thing: I have looked at several of your postings on GenForum. In one of them, a June 2002 posting on the Cardwell board, in the course of your discussion of Cardwells and Chamberlains, you state that "a group of Chamberlains accompanied Anthony Cardwell and his entire family when he left Grainger Co. TN, arriving Caldwell Co. TX in late-Dec. 1855." I'm wondering if you can give me any details about these Chamberlains. I know that the intermarriage of Chamberlains with Cardwells goes back at least as far as the union of Andrew Chamberlain (i.e., Jeremiah's son) to Mary A. Cardwell (the dau of Robert C. Cardwell, originally from Campbell Co., VA, and Elizabeth Copelin) in Grainger Co. in 1830. Can you tell me specifically which Chamberlains accompanied Anthony Rucker Cardwell and wife Mary Polly (Perryman) Cardwell on this cross-country migration? As I mentioned earlier, my g g grandfather James T. Chamberlain migrated first to MO, where he stayed for more than a decade before continuing on to Travis Co., TX, where he an family appear on the 1850 census. This occurred too with his brother, Thompson Chamberlain. As for the two sons of James T.'s and Thompson's older brother, Ninian A. Chamberlain, Sr., i.e., Daniel Carmichael Chamberlain and Wm. H. Chamberlain, they apparently did not migrate from TN to (Caldwell Co.) TX until between 1860 and 1870 (the former) and between 1870 and 1880 (the latter). So, assuming that the Chamberlains travelling with Anthony R. Cardwell were indeed from my Chamberlain family, I am wondering just who they were. I appreciate any info you have to give me. Bob, What I have is an account of the trip to Texas that was written by Anthony's daughter, Sarah Angeline "Sally" Cardwell Kelly somewhere around 1865. She indicates that a Sam Chamberlain and wife, Mary Elizabeth, and Sam's parents Thomas Chamberlain and his wife were with the contingent. An S. W. Chamberlain and wife M. E. were enumerated on the 1860 Travis County Census with P.O. at Gilland's Creek. Also listed are T. Chamberlain 62, and M. Chamberlan 60, both born TN. All were living together. I assumed these were the people that came to Texas with the Cardwells, 1860 being the first census after their arrival in Texas. The Robert C. Cardwell you mention was Anthony's older brother. He left Campbell County VA and went to Grainger Co. TN several years before Anthony went there. All of the Cardwell children left Campbell County, with the exception of Thomas, who stayed and cared for the parents until their deaths. I have a letter that Anthony wrote to that brother in Rustburg VA from Albade, Texas, which was in Caldwell County. Betty Texas ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bobby J. Betty, According to my records, J.J. (John James) Chamberlain (1866, Knox Co., TN-12 Jan. 1948, Bexar Co., TX) was the son of Wm. H. Chamberlain and the grandson of Ninian A. Chamberlailn, Jr., both of whom I mentioned in one of my earlier replies. J. J. married Mary Maude Brown (1868-1965) in Caldwell Co., TX, in 1888. They had 4 children: Oscar H.; James Alton; Flora A.; and Dera. Both J.J. and Maude are buried in Bunton Cem.
