    2. Hi, Can someone see if there is a Marriage Date for Rachel Mink, for Grainger, or surrounding Counties. The marriage date would probably have been 1908-1930. Thank you very much, Connie

    3. Dear Gail, Hello, there were death certificates recorded before 1912 in the State of Tennessee and in Grainger County. All counties, but the 4 largest counties, started keeping some death records in 1908. The officials at the time didn't the best job of it, but there are thousands of death certificates from 1908-1912 indexed and the actual death certificates are available. The 4 largest counties in Tennessee are Davidson, Hamilton, Knox and Shelby Counties. Here are the dates that these counties have death records: Hamilton from 1872 Knox from 1881 Nashville from 1874 Shelby from 1848 I have been doing research in the death records of Tennessee for years and it is sad that a lot of people did not receive a record due to various reasons, but they probably didn't even think of us genealogy researchers digging around looking for them!!! 3. Dear Richard, Since the location of Fry's School is unknown to me I checked the Weifaring Index to make sure Phillip died in Hamblen County. This index is compiled from the death certificates and in addition to the information online at Tennessee Archives, it includes the name of the parents. Phillip is indeed listed in the index. Phillip "SOAD". His parents are listed as Henry Soad and Rebecca Hollingsworth. In addition to this information an original death certificate would also list cause of death (some of these "causes" are not very specific) and the date of burial probably especially since he was interred under the auspices of a funeral home (Stretzer). The exact date of birth or death is not listed in the Weifaring index just the year date and the age of the decieased and the death certificate number. Exact dates (birth and death) of the deceased (if the "informant" had this information) would be on the original certificate. Although since I have ordered the neat new book it has cut down on my need for original certificates considerably. <grin> Also the first death certificates that list parents begin in 1914 and Stretzer funeral home records go back to about 1900. Records from other funeral homes in the area, the Hamblen courthouses records, daughters of the condederacy information, and extracts from Hamblen County Will books Vol. 1 is also listed. The certificate lists the marital status of the decieased, but usually NOT the spouse/s name. This information is occasionally given in Hamlen and Nearby Deaths. Sometimes the date of the marriage is listed although this is often just a year date. 3. Dear Debbie (and anyone else who is interested). Re: Mary Alice Stephens On the grounds that these families tended to intermarry a lot and that Martha Lou Long married Luther B. Hodge. I thought it quite likely that Mary Alice Stephens the second Mrs. Millard Hodge buried in Emma Jarnigan Cemetery. Mary Alice, wife of M.W. Hodge January 8, 1870 June 20 1903. However, <sigh> for some reason I thought I had recently seen some contrary information From the transcription of Economy Cemetery, listed next to Dochia Long, John W. and Emeline Marsh Long's daughter who died in 1899: Mary A. Hodge w/o M.W. Hodge Jan 1 1870 June 20 1902. <grin> This is a discrepancy that I have been unable to resolve. My database is a very complex one and has all sorts of ways to handle these sorts of dicrepancies with discussions but...in the family group sheet I will send later I have Mary Alice buried in Emma Jarnigan. Next I spent a VERY long time squinting at a print out of"Milard" Hodge's household on the 1900 Hamblen County census. (I am pretty sure that I know who the enumerator, William L. Mayes was since he was the only Willian L. that I know of living in Hamblen County at that time. The Mayes uniformly named ALL their sons WILLIAM H.!!! <grin>. Since he was a distant relative, like me descended from Sherrod Mayes, and a closer "in law", his second wife was my great grandfather's sister Mary Darthula Ivy, I shouldn't be so critical, but his handwriting has been driving me crazy for many years...also I was tempted to jusmp in my little truck and drive the many long miles to Eat Tennessee to Kidwell's Ridge where he is "lying" and offer him the pen I was holding. He should have used a better pen! <grin>) Although the entry for Milard Hodge's household said Mary E. and the E. was CLEARLY and "E" I finally decided that the wife COULD be Mary Alice, but I needed more information and informed my husband that I needed to order the new Hamblen County Tennessee marriage index to see if Mary Alice Stephens married Millard Hodge. The book arrived Saturday..<grin>I got this book under false pretenses, this marriage record was in Douthat's Hamblen County marrriages. From the census entry I couldn't really tell how long Millard had been amrried to the second Mrs. Hodge and I find the index in Douthat a little difficult to use particularly if there are pages and pages listed like the Hodges or Noes etc. Anyway I am still glad i got the book. <smile> Gail ----- Original Message ----- From: "DEBORAH ONEAL" <DRTONEAL@msn.com> To: <TNGRAING-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, January 27, 2006 06:00 Subject: Re: [TNGRAING-L] Long, Marsh, Stephens > Glad you discovered the Digital Images!!
