Hi Group, I am looking for any information on Alexander Maples, b abt.1848 in Grainger County. He married Mary Canady in 1865 in Grainger County. Anyone who has any information on these would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Steve M.
My records show that George Brock NEEDHAM married Nancy BOWERS on 24 Apr 1850 in Grainger Co., TN. They had twelve children. George was born 9 May 1828 and died 26 Jul 1898. George was the youngest of seven children by Polly Bock (Brock?) NEEDHAM. His mother died the day he was born. George's father, whose name is not in my records, married Nancy CHANDLER in June of 1829 and they had seven more children. (George's brother, John Anson NEEDHAM, married Sarah BOWERS, sister of Nancy BOWERS.) Nancy BOWERS was born 28 Mar 1833. She was the daughter of Andrew BOWERS and Katherine HOWETH of Grainger Co., TN. I am descended from Andrew BOWERS and Katherine HOWETH through their son, John BOWERS. Most of this information was furnished to me by BOWERS researcher, Ruth Bowers Dommestrup. I have more information from her on the descendants of George Brock NEEDHAM and Nancy BOWERS and of John Anson NEEDHAM and Sarah BOWERS. I am looking for any information anyone might have about the surname Widby. I have been told that the Widbys came from Virginia and settled in Grainger county. I know very little about the Widby family....but here is what I know, starting with my father. My father was Edward LeRoy Carter Widby, born in Knoxville Tennessee. His mother and father were Cora Redden and Basil Tyler Widby. Basil had a brother James Cecil, and a sister Deasery. Their mother was Sarah Woodsby, but do not know the name of the Widby man she was married to. I know that at one time Sarah and her husband ran a boarding house in Virginia. I would greatly appreciate any help anyone might be able to give me on either Woodsby or Widby name... Thanks Janet Coen
Hello. I am trying to determine the relationship between two men who both served in Company C of the 4th Tennessee Cavalry (USA). Richard R. Lacy was 23 years old when he enlisted Nov. 29, 1862 at Barboursville, KY. He stated that he was born in Grainger Co., TN. He rose to the rank of Sergeant. William H. Lacy was 18 years old when he enlisted Feb. 1, 1863 at Grainger Co., TN, where he stated that he was born. He was captured by the enemy July 31, 1864 near Atlanta during McCook's Raid, and died Feb. 20, 1865 while a prisoner of war. In the 1850 census, they are living two households apart. Richard's father was James Lacy, b. abt 1801 in TN, a minister. William's father was William A. Lacy, b. abt 1820 in TN, a farmer. I would like to know what the relationship was between James and William A., as well as any other information about these families. Thanks Jessie Blalock http://www.clark.net/pub/jcblal/tenn4cav/index.html

Since nobody has I am reposting an email I sent to the list awhile back. I know that the list is archived, and some of the larger lists I used to belong to were dominated by ppl who were always referring new comers to the archives since the same questions had come up before. This is a small and tolerant list... so here goes. This is Polyanna Creekmore's explanation of the rates for her transcription of the 1799 tax list. "In the provisions of the act of 1797 white polls consisted of 'all free males and male servants between the ages of twenty one and fifty years..." slaves "all slaves MALE and FEMALE between the ages of 12 and 50 years." You have also probably noticed from various tax lists that there was also a tax on stud horses and town lots as well as land and free polls (or white polls) and black polls. Hi again, I have figured out from my own research that the Captain's companies did represent geographic areas. Since some of my ancestors seemed to keep living in the same place I can figure out about which geographic area the captain's companies the were listed in would cover. As in Captain Mckee's (1799), Captain Howell's (1805), and Captain Lacy's (1822) apparently were about where Civil District 2 was on the 1850-1870 Grainger County census. The section of Grainger County where my ancestors lived became part of Hamblen County (created 1870). However, in answer to you question although there are apparently maps showing the area the Civil Districts covered I kwno of no source which would list the geographic area the Captain's companies covered. Perhaps someone else does?? Gail in MO > Hello! > I found who I think is our ancestor Matthew McPhetridge/McFetridge > listed on the 1799 Tax Surnames List for Grainger Co. TN. Hi Sharon I am starting to do some research on the Arnett Family and have a few question you might help me with. Have you found any additional information on the Wm. Green Arnett? Do you know when and where Wm. Green and Nella Arnett died? >From the information you sent me in the past, it appears that the four under age Orphans (Margaret, Jacob, Louisa and Martha J Arnett) were raised in Missouri by Mr. Coffee and his wife Mary Ann Arnett Coffee. Due you know the first name of Coffee? Do you know when the Coffee family and the four Orphans moved to Missouri? Do you know the maiden name of Sarah that married Jacob Arnett in Missouri? Do you know if Jacob and Sarah had a daughter name Jossie birth July 1873? I will let you know I find. I will look for the Smith connection. If there is something else in particular that you are looking for with the Arnett family, tell me what it is and I will help you research it? Hello! I found who I think is our ancestor Matthew McPhetridge/McFetridge listed on the 1799 Tax Surnames List for Grainger Co. TN. He is listed under Capt. Hamilton's Comp. as Matthew McFeetrage 1FP, 200 A. Can someone please tell me what 1FP means. Also does this mean he was a member of Capt. Hamilton's Comp. and were in Grainger Co. this is. Thank you! Lori
Hi, Last week when I did my stint at the genealogy I was not able to get back to look at censuses and this week I am not able to go since we are getting ready to go away for a few days which is very sad since I have interesting new information... Since I was keeping the desk I just piled up whatever Tennessee periodicals we had and aimlessly looked for "stuff". I found the following in Ansearchin News Fall 1985 Volume 32 No. 3 pg. 106. For those of you who get to go hang out at places like the Tennessee Library and Archives it was transcribed from Microfilm Roll No. 3 Legislative petitions In 1806 the citizens of Grainger and Claiborne Counties submitted a petition to change the road to the Tennessee legislature to change the road to Kentucky... Benjamin Ivey's name appeared on the petition. AFAIK Benjamin was the only Benjamin in Grainger County at this time. Furthermore others of the list were Moses Hodge (Delilah Ivey's husband, Dudley Mayes (son of Sherrod and Benjamin's BIL although Jane and Benjamin weren't married yet) Joseph Dania/Davis (most likely Joseph Daniels), John Howell, Henry Ivey (my fourth great grandfather), Henry's other sons Phillip and Thomas. In other words they were passing it around the neighborhood. My question is how old did you have to be to sign a petition to the legislature? I would have thought you would be twenty-one? The date usually given for Henry's birth is 1787. The 1850 Grainger County census lists Henry's age as 60. <smile> BTW the way Benjamin's name doesn't appear on the 1805 tax list. Gail
Hi Grp, hope you are all staying Coollllllll.................. have a mystery (so what's new) a Wm Green ARNETT married into our ROACH family.... Ellenor"Nella" ROACH both b:ca 1819/20....they md 1838 in Grainger.... just found an Indenture/Apprenticeship record for him 1829...Green SMITH ,Alias Green ARNETT. an orphan age 9 years Feb last, bound unto Jacob ARNETT until age 21. Aug 19... also 1829, Indenture binding Green SMITH unto Jacob ARNETT cancelled and the indenture binding Green Smith to Willis SMITH confimed. Nov 16... he was married as an ARNETT, and his kids were all raised in MO. as ARNETT....on the marriage bonds for John ROACH (Nella's Bro) William G. ARNETT signed with John...but the person transcribed the record as Wm G. SMITH, his signature in one spot (on the orginal) looked like SMITH at the other place it was more clearly ARNETT....Now I'm really wondering, who he belonged to.....anybody have a clue......... Also found 1845.. Elisha OWENS allowed five dollars for support of Alpheus YATES, orphan, for four months April 7 Thanks, Sharon

I am searching for any information on Joseph Douglas b abt 1735. He married (1) Ann Unknown (2) Margaret Stroud. Joseph and Margaret had a son named Berryman DOUGLAS. I have the will of Joseph DOUGLAS (1809). I also know that Berryman married Susannah Bailes October 19,1808 in Grainger Co. Some census records indicate they had two children. One of these two is more than likely my ggg grandfather, Bryant DOUGLAS. Berryman moved with the two children to Rutherford County after 1810. He was on the Grainger County 1810 Census by himself. Could Susannah have died by then? Can anyone offer any help on this. I am expanding my search to include various spellings and asking if anyone's research includes a marriage of one of their family to a Brownlow, Brownlee, or Brownley. I have even seen it spelled "Browlow"...we know how notoriously bad spellers these officials were...anyway, I thought I would see if mybe the woman I am looking for might be mentioned as a relative in someone else's research. A.S. Brownlow m. ? in time to have a child by 1841. She died after the last child was born in 1847 and before he married Nancy Walters in August of 1847. The children were born in Washington Co., Tennessee but that doesn't mean he married her there and since he doesn't show up in the Washington Co. 1840 census, I am guessing he didn't. He grew up in Abingdon, Va. but I can find nothing on him there either... (he was the brother to Wm. G. Brownlow, who was the first Governor of Tennessee after Reconstruction) I would appreciate anyone sending me anything that even looks close...that's how much I want to find this woman's name.... Thanks, Pam
Do any of you BEELER descendants out there know anything about a Rhinehart COFFMAN who married Sarah BEELER, dau. of John BEELER on Jan. 22, 1831? My ancestor, Leonard COFFMAN was bondsman for Rhinehart, and also I believe was his brother. I believe that the elder Rhinehart COFFMAN listed in the 1830 census could be their father, but do not have any documentation of this. My Leonard COFFMAN's eldest son was also named Rhinehart.
