Sorry, Grp I thought that was going just to Jessie...have to watch that address thingy Sharon
Jessie, yes Al and I are in contact alot now, I had to straighten him out on alot of stuff, and he has corrected alot, we are right now working on Thompson's, have found alot of new info on this family, and are trying to prove all the way back....Al is a good guy ,I like them all, but when people try to straighten out too many of these lines at once they get more mixed up...thats why I only worked on proveing my husbands lines to begin with, just to untangle them, those Tennesse hill billys<VBG> are a caustion, Grainger Co. is so inter-woven, our line especially.. but fun, very interesting people I keep telling my husband I'm going to stop on the Roachs by such and such a time, and get caught up on my own dead end, Yea Right !! then someone writes me abt Roach's/ Owens /Galyon or one of them, and I think I'll never be done with them..... > <<<< Do you have John Green Roach as the son of James Roach and Ann > Thompson ?>>>> Most defineatly.....that much is proven and there was a Henry Roach in Or Co. NC in 1770 (reference,) and James Roach did have Ashcroft/Ashcraft neibors....so that is possible, but not positive beyound that its pretty fuzzy...lots of people assumeing things with out proof Sharon. > > > Jessie > > -----Original Message----- > From: froach598@juno.com <froach598@juno.com> > To: TNGRAING-L@rootsweb.com <TNGRAING-L@rootsweb.com> > Date: Monday, November 01, 1999 10:27 PM > Subject: Re: [TNGRAING-L] ROACH - Grainger Co. > > > >Hi Jessie > > > >Yes, It all looks familar.......just one spelling error, wasn't > Alfred > >who md Ellenor a Culliver too? > > > >Sharon > > > > > >On Mon, 1 Nov 1999 22:09:36 -0800 "Jessie Coffey" > ><JRCoffey@worldnet.att.net> writes: > >> Here is some ROACH info that I have recieved. > >> Any one look familar ? Hi Mickey, Don't forget about the marriage record of James and Martha Davis. I hope you got my money order. If possible I would like to have the marriage bond. I don't know Martha's maiden name. Thanks, Mary
Sharon, You are probably correct. The information I have was sent to me from someone else. Have you ever been in contact with Al Roach from Oklahoma ? Most of my info came from him. Mickey and all, I am in Overton Co, TN and a group from our Overton Co Historical Society have begged and finally received a room in the Courthouse Annex to archive our old records which were also in a deplorable condition. So far, we have worked hundreds of VOLUNTEER hours sorting, cleaning and filing our records which date into the early 1800's. When we first started we had contacted the LDS people and they sent us a couple of missionaries who worked with us for about a year helping us get organized and giving us pointers about how to go about our work, now we are on our own. We have a elected a County Archivist who organizes our schedule and we work on Monday nights for about 3 hours and anytime thru the week that we can. It is dirty and tedious work but just think of the "treasures" that you find and we also have fun working together. We also contacted the TN State Library and Achives who sent some of their staff for an all-day workshop and this helped us also. As someone who has "been there" and is still there, my hat goes off to Mickey and the others and I wish you luck in you endeavor. After we elected our Archivist and the County Commissioners approved of this (they are not really behind us, just go along to keep us happy!) we have accepted donations from individuals to use for supplies, copies, etc. which is handled by our Society treasurer and have really been blessed with financial help from many states. TN? I am looking for a possible NICHOLS Cherokee blood line in E TN. Who were Polly Ann NICHOL'S parents?? Thanks for helping, April aerobbins@earthlink.net
Mickey, Would you like some help with going through the records on a not very regular basis? My husband's family is from Rutledge (most still live there) and we are there on a pretty regular basis. In fact, we'll be there this weekend. Whenever I am there I would love to help if you'll tell me how. It has to be on the weekends because I have a kindergartner and a preschooler so we are in Chattanooga during the week. My husband's mom knows everyone at the Courthouse really well so I'm sure I can get a key, etc., to the old school. Let me know! Mary Carol Roach

(Grainger County, Probate Records) Inventory of the Estate of Rachel Cameron by R. H. Grove, Administrator, 1 September 1890. (Grainger County, Probate Records) ******** I can possibly check a little further on the Grove family. I remember looking up some census records on them some time ago to confirm the findings above. Census records are well known for misspelled names and wrong ages. As indicated below, Reuben, Sr., and Nancy were probably living with George in the 1850 census. My spelling of Grove comes from George's signature in my great, great grandfather's Southern Claims Commission file and R. H. Grove's signature on Rachel (Grove) Dodson Cameron's probate records. This spelling also agrees with the marriage records. If I remember correctly, R. H. is Reuben, Jr., another son of Reuben and Nancy (Mayes) Grove. This is probably the Reuben who married Jane Mayes in 1843. And the 1806 marriage is his parents as confirmed below. Although Goodspeed's biographies are not always accurate either, it states that George's parents were Reuben Grove, born 19 Mar 1777, Loudon Co., VA, died 16 Sep 1866, at George's home, Daisydell, Grainger Co., Tenn., and Nancy Mayes, born 13 Oct 1788, Grainger Co., Tenn., and died [no day] Apr 1852, also at George's home in Daisydell. George was postmaster there as well as clerk and master of chancery court for Grainger Co., 1877-and still serving in 1887. The father in 1801 came with his parents to Grainger County, and after marrying in 1806 and living at various places, settled at our subject's home in December, 1810, as a farmer. Hi, I guess I should let everyone know what is going on with the records in Grainger Co. Most if not all know the records are a mess. Several years ago the Courthouse basement flooded, this is where a lot of the records had been stored. When the basement was cleaned they moved a lot of records to the old Rutledge High School. It has been told that some of the soaked papers were thrown away but I don't have first hand knowledge of this. But I have been to the old school and the records are a mess. They are stored in the auditorium. There are boxes of records sitting on the floor and in chairs. I along with a couple of friends worked one day this summer going through boxes trying to retrieve marriage records. We did find a lot of them and took them back to the courthouse. We are not certain that we found them all. I along with another friend have been going through the boxes of marriage license and bonds and making an index of these and at the same time putting them in order. They are boxed in order of a 10 year period. We have found one marriage license that was issued in Hancock Co. and one that was issued in Jefferson Co. How these came to Grainger Co. is a mystery. We made copies of these and mailed it to the county where the license was issued to let them know where the original is filed. As we sort through these files we have made an index and I typed them and have printed copies and had them bound. These are in a 10 year period starting with the oldest files. The first book contains the license and/or bonds for 1796-1809. There are over 500 couples listed. Several people had contacted me about contributing money toward our work in Grainger Co. I don't feel comfortable just taking their money so I thought the books would at least give them something for their money. The books are bound with the comb type binding with a heavy paper front and back cover. They are typed in alphabetical order using the grooms last name. It lists the grooms name, bride's name and the date the license and/or bond was issued. Anyone that orders the book and would like a copy of something in the book we do that for a small charge. We also will do other research but you will need to contact me privately about the charge for that. The books are $15.00 each and this covers postage of mailing the book back to you 1st class mail. If you would like to order a copy of any of the books just mail a money order for $15.00 to: Mickey Morris P.O. Box 34 Powell, TN 37849 Book #1 (1796-1809) Book #2 (1810-1819) Book #3 (1820-1829) Be sure to make a note of which book(s) you are ordering. Be sure to e-mail me if you have any questions. Also if you have any questions about our work you may contact Barbara Jackson (county court clerk of Grainger Co.) at the courthouse in Grainger Co. Thanks! Mickey

Susan Roach is the daughter of John Green Roach and Margaret Elizabeth "Peggy" McDaniel, after Hamilton Mallicoat died pre 1860 , Susan md C.C. Nance in 1866...he was alot older than she and they had no children.....she however is buried as Susan Mallicoat...which I think is odd, does anyone know why?, I have seen this happen before....maybe just the children's preference?
