    2. that is terrible, I just don't understand the selfishness of people who would do that, steal materials. Genealogist are usually so giving and shareing, or at least they used to be, I have found a new mentality of some, (not all) that only do research on the internet, and have not spent the hours and hours and $$$ pouring over micro-films and old books and docuemnts until your eyes blurr..... and who would never think of stealing material, because it might mean that maybe a cousin or relative would not be able to find that same info and connect with them...... thats my 2cts worth on the subject, Sharon WA State................... 3. How many boxes of records are there? Does the possibility exist that a letter-writing campaign to state and county officials may produce a safe place to house these records? If so, let me know the names and addresses and I'll do my part. It also would not hurt to have several newspapers write about this. Maybe you've already thought of this, and maybe it's been done ... if not, it surely couldn't hurt. Maybe someone will come up with a place for them from such publicity. Like Kay, I'm not able to come there and physically do something about it, but I'm an old hand at stirring up some people that can do something about it. 3. This entire issue saddens my heart once again. It seems every few months the "old school hose" condition is discussed and unfortunately it seems to be a doomed situation. I for one feel frustrated that I live so far away and can't rush there in hope to find that one missing link in my family - that gg grandfather that appeared in Grainger, fathered a few kids and then poof he was gone. Well poof the records are going to be gone in the winter snow and rain with no chance of re creating history. Tragic. Will someone who is right there living this nightmare situation in Grainger please e-mail me directly I have a few questions. Thanks Kay

    3. The Hamblen Co library in Morristown has Grainger Co records on microfilm. They are kept in the genealogy room where the materials were given by the Hamblen County Genealogy Society. They have to keep the materials locked up because people keep stealing them. The libraries in Hamblen Co do not have security strips and they lose a lot of material by theft. Lynda

    1. Re: [TNGRAING-L] Re: Records in the old school
    2. Most of the records in the old school are on microfilm in the library and they have a rmicrofilm reader and printer. They do have wills in the court house but those are on microfilm in the library. I suggest you check at the library before going either to the old school or court house to see if what you are looking for is on microfilm. On microfilm are lots of deaths, wills, marriage license, court records, etc. The library is only open on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday's. Louise Murphy

    3. Mickey We won't get there in time Monday to go to the school. It would be Tue before I could get to the school or the courthouse. We live in Indiana and driving that distance then working is just too much for an old woman. Since you think its Tue the store is closed if I could get in touch with you maybe we could set up a time. While we are there we will have to go to Monroe and Sevier Counties too. Thanks for you prompt answer. Mildred IMsMickey@aol.com wrote: > I'm usually not sure what day I'm going to Rutledge. 2. I'm usually not sure what day I'm going to Rutledge. I can try to go on Monday but will not be sure until Monday morning. With 3 children sometimes they make my schedule for me. I really wouldn't waste my time going to the old school. It is such a mess you would probably find nothing and it is so dirty. You can go to the courthouse to find marriage records. I'm not really sure what else is available since I've only worked in that one office. I think they have an index to wills but not really sure. I know there are wills in the old school but finding a certain one would be almost impossible. The courthouse opens at 8:30 am. I'm not sure what the procedure for getting in the old school is. I know each time I go I have to explain who I am and why I'm there. There is an old thrift store that you have to go through to get into where the old records are. They don't open until 10 am and I know one day I was there they were closed, so I'm not sure which day that is. I think it may be Tuesdays. If at all possible I will try to be in Rutledge on Monday and I'll try to help you and we will try to get into the old school so you can see how bad it really is. Thanks! Mickey

It didn't look like the roof had leaked but there was alot of ceiling material on top of the boxes. It really is sad to see the old records in that shape. I hope to get in there to work soon. Thanks! 3. The message portion of the email from BAIRWIN@aol.com was blank in my copy, also. I presume it was an error of some sort and the sender will realize that they sent nothing. Either the reply was sent empty by accident or it was sent by accident. I am interested if a reply about Mayes/Grove(s) was intended because I was involved in the Mayes/Grove(s) exchanges.
