    3. I will also help, let me know what I should do. We shouldn't take the attitude that nothing can be done. Our ancestors took better care of records . These records don't mean much to some folks but just think of all the history that is there. I will help., Mary

    2. People! People! Let's all take a deep breath....now, isn't that better? If everyone will just hold on for a little while longer, there may be hope yet for all those records. My husband's family still lives in Rutledge...his mom works at the drug store and the funeral home, his sister is vice-principle at one of the high schools, his brother builds houses...I could go on but you get the picture. They have all lived up there for generations and know just about everybody there-including the powers that be. I thought what I'd try is to get my mother-in-law on to this and see what she can do. She is good friends with a lot of the people at the courthouse, I know. Now, wheels grind kind of slowly up there, so it may take a few weeks but I'd bet that we can get something done about all of this! So say your prayers and cross your fingers and I'll let you know as soon as I can! Sincerely, Mary Carol Roach Chattanooga, TN

    2. I am sure there are quite a few of us within driving distance of Rutledge. Maybe we should think about all of us converging on the old school house to help if a place can be found to store them. Gladys

    2. Hi all, There must be something that we can all do to PRESERVE these unseen records. My Linkous/Lincas/Linkus line hits a BRICK WALL in Grainger Co.,,, I am afraid that there might be a "record" there somewhere that can help me to "get over this brick wall." I live in Prestonsburg, KY,, not to far away to lend a "helping hand" at being apart of the solution :-) What can I do to HELP!! ?? How can we organize to preserve these valuable records?? Before moving to Kentucky,, I lived in Manardville, TN. for 8yrs, and Rutledge, TN. ,, and from experience I know its hard to get the "local governments" help in these matters. I am sure that others, on & off the list, have the same concerns and "Brick Walls" that I have. So, lets all work together to at least "try" and do something :-) Thanks, John Linkes (worried about those records) Researching: Linkous/Linkus/Lincas, Housewright, Stallard, Wollard/Woolard

    2. Re: How many boxes of records are there?   Does the possibility exist that a letter-writing campaign to state and county officials may produce a safe place to house these records? If so, let me know the names and addresses and I'll do my part. It also would not hurt to have several newspapers write about this. Maybe you've already thought of this, and maybe it's been done ... if not, it surely couldn't hurt. Maybe someone will come up with a place for them from such publicity. Like Kay, I'm not able to come there and physically do something about it, but I'm an old hand at stirring up some people that can do something about it. 3. It is beyond my comprehension that there is not a historical society in that area that can't or won't take charge of the old records in that deteriorating schoolhouse. What gives here? There is a little community just south of Durant, OK, that has established the Bryan Co. Heritage Association. Their little building is chock full of old Bryan Co. records that were going to be discarded. If it weren't for this little group of dedicated volunteers, many old tax records, etc., would be lost. Whether these Grainger Co. records have been microfilmed or not, they should be saved. They should be housed in a place that will not cause more deterioration, until they can be catalogued, etc. There needs to be a person or organization, locally, to take up the charge, and there needs to be people, like ourselves, to give tremendous support. After all, this is part of our heritage. What can I do to help? Anita L. Hinson

    3. There must be a safe place to store these records for the future until something permanent can be done with them. Some of my ancestors, Davis, Lee, Taylor and etc lived in Rutledge, Tn. Most places have old buildings. In McKinney, Tx, they use the old Post Office building where everything is collected including tombstones. Surely someone has a place to store them. Maybe I missed it, but why were they moved from the courthouse? Doesn't the courthouse have a basement? Mary

REALLY SAD I talked with the people at the court house, they said no one really could do anything because of the people shortage. I was told the State Archives was stepping in, they even had boxes set up on the stage, as if getting ready to transport and not go through the things that were wrapped up. Can't the DAR, SAR or the VFW step in to help save these records? If I lived near there I would help. I am more then happy to donate money to help with the cost of saving these records. We need to really PUSH the state of TN to save these records, maybe if Washington, DC knew of this, they would step in. Who is the Senators for that area? let's start a letter campaign to them and demanding for something to be done FAST. Jean Brand Fresno CA

    3. I agree with Jean. Will the folks in the Grainger County area please gather up the names and addresses of all state, county, and federal officials, and any service organizations, DAR, whoever - and send them out to us? They need to be bombarded with mail during a short period of time - not more than a week - so we'll need start-end date. Wouldn't hurt if we wrote letters to the editors of the newspapers, too.
