Forgive me if this is a newbie question, but is there such a thing as an 1860 and 1870 Grainger County Census ? Steve
Hi All... I have a John DOUGLASS who signed on a marriage bond of my ancestor James TRAVIS. James married Mary CORNET on Aug. 08, 1857 in Jefferson CO., TN. Many times the folks who sign on a marriage bond happen to be related to either the bride or the groom. Or are at lease close friends or neighbors. Therefore, I would appreciate any info regarding John DOUGLASS or his connections to the CORNET or TRAVIS families in Jefferson Co, TN. Many Thanks! Debbie blakley3@earthlink.net
We haven't got up to 1900 in our transcriptions but I'll keep everyone posted and when we get to that point just email me and I'll do a look up for you. Thanks Mickey
Could anyone tell me where (what communities) the Civil Districts 9 and 10 are in Jefferson Co., TN. abt. 1861? Thanks, Debbie

Will someone, preferebly Mickey please explain again what the books are for those of us who are new? I have several ancestors who married at Rutledge, and would be glad to pay for copies of info that confirms it. I need to know what is in the books and how to order them, airmail to Norway. Anyone feeling you are taking advantage, well let them go research, copy and type in their own books..... I really don't care what is on micro film, it's a heck of a lot easier for me to purchase your books. I don't see you forcing anyone to purchase your books, so what's the problem? Anyone having not seen the old school house wouldn't believe the shape those records are in and I for one really do appreciate you hard efforts. Duane, I along with a friend have been going to Rutledge for several months now and have been trying to sort through all the files. I'm sure that you are aware that the records in Rutledge are a mess. Several years ago the basement in the courthouse flooded and alot of the records were soaked. As far as I know the officials at Rutledge tried to save the records. They moved the records to the old Rutledge High School to store them and to try to allow them to dry out. A couple of friends and I went to the old school and tried to pull out all of the old license/bonds that we could find and returned them to the court house. Debi and I have been trying to transcribe all the license/bonds. We have had to refile alot of the records. Some are very hard to read. Our first little booklet contains the oldest records. 1796-1809. #2 book contains 1810-1819, #3 contains 1820-1829. I want everyone to know that it is the opionion of some that I'm trying to take advantage of some people out there because the records can be found on micro film. I'm not certain that all the records have been micro filmed but I am certain that I'm not trying to take advantage of anyone. I have been selling the books for $15.00 each and this includes shipping. If you find any license/bond in our book that means that it is located in the courthouse and I can make you a copy of it for the same price the courthouse charges me. So I am making no money on the copies. There are copies of an index of the marriages in Grainger Co. but that doesn't mean the license/bond is still at the courthouse. Our book is a list of marriage license/bond that is there now. Anyone interested please contact me privately at IMsMickey@aol.com. I hope this answers your questions. Thank you.
Hi Mary, I got your earlier message too, about being in the process of moving. Thank you for sending the information below. I have seen copies of the Will ( or some document) that listed my Gemima McCoy Wolfe with David McCoy as one of his heirs. Archibald McCoy is the name that my family's tradition has had listed. There was a woman that passed away last year at the age of 99 named Janie Ramsey. She was a 1st cousin to my Grandfather, James Madison (Jim Matt) Coffey. Janie was a member of the DAR and had collected and researched some of our family's ancestry. She had asked her Grandmother, my GreatGreatgrandmother, Lydia Wolfe Coffey, daughter of Gemima McCoy and Adam Wolfe, WHO her Grandfather was and Lydia (Ma Lydie as she was refered to) replied, in Janie's words, strongly, that her Grandfather was Arch McCoy. I believe that many have went by this when listing Arch as the father of Gemima. BUT, also, Lydia (Ma Lydie) suffered from Alzhemiers in her later years. She lived to be about 94 (1836-1930), so she would have been "up there" in years of age, probably, when Janie Ramsey (1899 - 1998) asked her these questions. This is how I got my information.....at the beginning. Back in the early 80's, there was a Newsletter (consisting of about 50 pages each issue, only lasted 7 issues) put out focusing on the families of Eastern Tennessee. I was lucky enough to meet someone living near me and just so happened to be a distant cousin who lowned me these issues. There was much info regarding the Surnames: COFFEY, WOLFE, RUCKER, DALTON, MCCOY, and many many more. These are a few of my connection with the area. This Newsletter's name was THE WAGON WHEEL. People / researchers, would send in information, queries, family lines, Wills, Deeds, and other documents to pertainging to the Eastern TN area. I would be interested to know if there are any copies of Donald McCoy's book left. Would you know ? Or, how I could get in touch with him ? The information I have on my WOLFE line is that Adam Wolfe was the son of John Wolfe and Catherine Bare (Barr). I have some of the brothers of John Wolfe (b. abt 1752). I got this information from the book by Dr. David Trimble, AMERICAN ORIGINS. Not sure who the parents of John was. I haven't spent alot of time on this line yet. I am not familiar with Lemmie and Clarence Coffey. Thanks again for the information. I found my MCCoy book it's about 13 pages but I'll type one page. "It finally narrowed down to about five, either brothers or close relatives, who came to TN. They were Archibald, David, William, Joel and John, sons of John McCoy, a Revolutionary war veteran born in 1752 in North Carolina. Now Archibald was not our immediate ancestor as I had thought. David Sr. was. Here's his family as listed in a newspaper clipping that Bill Grohse, historian of Hancock County, had attached to his copy of the 1850 census: " David Sr. married Kate Wolfe (Catherine Wolfe) Children: Jamima- married Adam Wolfe Linda - married Charles Wolfe Margaret - married George Wolfe Polly - married William Hipshire Betty - married Ewel Jordan Claiborne - married Elizabeth Day This is from Donald McCoy book there are other family's listed. I believe the Jamima is your Gemima. The Charles and George Wolfe are sons of Charles Wolfe who was born 1746 in Pa. who is my 4gt grandfather his granddaughter married Nicholas Antrican. Are you related to Lemmie and Clarence Coffey? Mary Antrican Jones

I seek ancestry of the TN Harris family which included MOSES BLACK HARRIS, who maried NANCY HAYES in Grainger Co in 1847. They were in n/w AR by the time of the 1850 census, and believe to have moved on to the Springfield MO area about 1853. They had four children--Josephine, Nancy, Presley, and an unknown son. Any help out there? Cecil Harris
