Hi Group - Sorry about the typing there. If you think I'm on drugs, you're right! Some kind of flu-bug bit me. Of course, it's John Alexander - not what I typed! Also, Absalom Roach/Cardwell group arrived in TX December 31, 1855, not 1850 as I typed. Little lapse of memory there too boot. >From: "Betty B" <bjrb@hotmail.com> >Reply-To: TNGRAING-L@rootsweb.com >To: TNGRAING-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: Re: [TNGRAING-L] ROACH >Date: Tue, 04 Jan 2000 08:45:48 PST > >Jim, > >I show John Aledander Roach b. 28 Jun 1854 Grainger Co. Can't tell you much, except that this Absalom was a brother to my John Roach, md. Sarah "Sally" Roman(s), and the son of Absalom & Mary Middleton Roach. Absalom died 1858 Arkansas, if that's any help. Can also tell you that I show he married Levica Vicey Janeway 10 December 1835, Grainger Co. TX. She is sometimes listed as being Vicey Janeway, so you may want to look in that direction as well. Children: Wesley B. Roach, b. 1837 Grainger Co. TN Hannah Roach, b. 1838, md. Thomas Taksworth 26 Sept 1861, Grainger Co. William Roach, b. 1841 Grainger Co. TN Nancy A. Roach, b. 1843 Grainger Co. TN, md. Daniel Spenser 13 May 1866 Grainger Co. TN Amanda E. TN, b. 6 June 1857, d. 11 April 1908, daughter of James B. Morrell and Elizabeth S. ______. With the above stated, it must be mentioned that some researchers do not believe that Margaret & Levinia were daughters of Absalom and Levica Vicey. Still others do not believe David Lafayette was their son. The Morrell Family Bible Records sheds little light in that regard. The Hon. Wm. Mitchell wrote Morrell info on a single sheet of paper, tucked into the Bible, witnessed by Sam Cardwell and Temp Hall, that was good enough to hold up in some type of Court - the likes of which I can't recall off-hand. Somewhere, I have a copy of those entries and that sheet of paper. So, whether or not Martha Levinia and David Lafayette Roach were brother and sister, it certainly does appear that they may have been related, or at least knew each other. I have not thoroughly researched this by my own means, so can only pass along what I have and hope it helps point you in the right direction. What a way to start the New Year! The Howell I'm searching for is the family of POLLY Howell, not Patsy. The following is what I had previously posted in error. Sorry - Anita - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------ Hi, I'm researching the HOWELL and LINE families who were in Grainger Co. Patsy HOWELL married William LINE in Grainger Co. in 1812. I believe they then moved to Roane Co. Was Patsy the daughter of Malachai Howell? Anita Anita L. Hinson
Anyone have any of these> ????? MEEK, MEADOWS, MORRIS or WHITEHEAD Thanks, Debbie blakley3@earthlink.net
I saw where someone has the surname of BURCHELL on the Grainger CO. Roll Call list? I have a James BURCHELL that was b. abt. 1845 that married an Ollie HILL, b. abt. 1872. No other info here yet though. I also have a Tammer Mellissa Burchell who married a Albert W. Pratt. Are any of these in your lines? I am also looking for the surnames of CORNETT, POTTER, WELLS and SNYDER associated with TRAVIS. Thanks, Debbie blakley3@earthlink.net
Karen, I do not have a date or much info at all....but would you see if per chance you might have a Ruth BUTLER that married an Unk. COMER man? Any help greatly appreciated! Cindy (and anyone interested in DALTON and/or DODSON/DOTSON Grainger Co TN: Thanks. Did Grainger Co TN exist in 1790? I thought 1796. There is no Grainger Co TN marriage Samuel Dodson/Dotson to Mary Polly Dalton 1796-1866. I realize there is a Grainger Co TN Reuben Dalton will that mentions a dau married to a (not named) Dotson. The reason I am asking about the date/place of marriage of Samuel Dodson/Dotson and Mary Polly Dalton is that there exist two versions of Samuel's first wife (given below). - --------------------------------------------------------------- Mrs Sherrill (Sherman) Williams, compiler and editor, of the two vol set "The Dodson (Dotson) Family of North Farnham Parish, Richmond County, Virginia: A History and Genealogy of Their Descendants" said of this Samuel: "His first wife may have been Mary (Polly) Dalton, daughter of Reuben Dalton..." "Samuel Dotson's first wife died before 1830 as that census shows no females in Samuel Dotson's household. Some of the researchers on this family have the belief that the first wife of Samuel Dotson was a Stone, but nothing has been found to confirm this belief." - ------------------------------------------------------------ 1921 statement re wives of Samuel Dodson by Grainger Co TN Claiborn Hicks Dotson. "Aunt Sallie McANALLY was Born March 24 1789 Died April 5, 1877 She married Charles BURNS too them was Born two Children Charles and Ruth She then maried Samuel DOTSON she was his 3rd wife his first wife was a CLOUNCH [CLONTZ] his Second was a STONE Aunt Sallie as we all called her was Sallie BURNS Formily Sallie McANALLY a sister to Grandpap McANALLY Charles a Preacher." - ------------------------------------------------------------- CLTimberman@aol.com wrote: > > Bill, I believe this is how I found Mary Polly DALTON. Hi Evelyn! Thanks for any help. Sometimes those census takers didn't spell or count very well! I have seen my Nancy Greenlea spelled both ways....With the "e" and with the "a". Your guess is as good as mine. I also have about four different dates of birth for her according to whatever census year that I am looking at. Census date of birth shows> 1850 census shown as b. 1806 1860 census shown as b. 1814 1870 census shown as b. 1812 1880 census shown as 1817 and living with Betty Travis and Rachael Pratt. William B. TATE SR. lived in Grainger Co. and was a Confederate War Hero. I don't have my notes right now (we are between computers- and are slowly attempting to transfer the data.) ....but William B. TATE SR. owned much property in Grainger Co. as well as other places. He supposedly died unmarried but there are birth records for some which state that he is their father. One of those children was James Franklin PIERCE Sr....ie "Shoppie" PIERCE. He was the youngest son of Nancy (GREENLEE) PIERCE . Nancy would be my ggg-grandmother on the PIERCE side. Nancy's daughter (ie: Shoppies sister.....) was named Nancy Adaline PIERCE and married David Tate TRAVIS ( my gg-grandfather & direct line). Nancy (GREENLEA) PIERCE, as I stated before worked as domestic help for the William B. TATE SR. after her husband David PIERCE's death ( or abondanment?. It was not long before she bore a child. It is believed that she give James the last name of PIERCE to avoid ridicule. Anyway, that part is unknown for certain.....BUT... James Franklin PIERCE SR., must have been Williams child as William B. TATE SR. left him land in his will and William is also listed as the father on the birth certificate. David PIERCE was not listed on the census nor has he been found anywhere else. It is recorded that before his death, William B. TATE SR. left $20,000. in silver or gold coins in a large wiskey barrel, for maimed Confererate soldiers. I also just received a copy of an old newspaper clipping that states that William TATE Sr. owned and operated a riverboat from Grainger Co. to Knox Co. for awhile. My gg-grandfather David Tate TRAVIS, had a brother named William Henry TRAVIS and this William B. TATE SR. left a life estate for my WIlliam and his wife. There were allowed to live "rent free" on land owned by Willam B. TATE SR. until their death. Reason's are unknown to me, but William was a Civil War vet.... That could have been the reason? There are alot of very entwined things here. It gets rather complicated! This TATE and his related family get thoroughly mixed with the NOE's & CHAMBERLAINS as well as my TRAVIS and PIERCE families. Thanks for looking tomorrow.....Debbie --- Original Message ----- From: Hansson <rethanss@ekucolonel.com> To: <TNGRAING-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, January 04, 2000 8:22 PM Subject: Re: [TNGRAING-L] DANIEL/GREENLEE > > Hello Debbie, > > My GREENLEE has the e instead of the a at end. Much thanks to Nancy Cassada Nelson for transcribing and uploading the Big Springs Baptist church minutes and to Duane Mills for his surname list. I am wondering if anyone can identify the Elizabeth Jennings on this list. Is she the same person as Elizabeth Dodson, who married Obediah Jennings, also on the list? Or could she be Obediah's mother? Thanks for your help. Ann Hill
