Gail, on how I know this "that Edward was much older" the 1860 census with child William age 6, I know Sarah was born ca: 1825 ,so in 1860 she would only have been abt 35 or so... she isn't on the 1850 census with her father Green ROACH, where was she, I dunno ?, but she had two children (out of wedlock) we assume, because they are Nancy & Nelson Roach.. before she married Edward MAYES in 1853 busy Girl, she and her two ROACH children are mentioned along with Edward MAYES and William as heirs...in Estate records in of Green ROACH 1867 and later in Land records in 1913 I wonder who this William MAYES b: ca 1854 married? Yep, I thought so, but wanted an EXPERT opinion... Sarah Roach b: ca 1825 may have died with little William Mayes birth or shortly after...as she is already dec'd in her father's Estate records in 1867 and she obviouly wasn't with Edward on 1860 census.. looks like you did just send it to the list...<VBG> THANK YOU GAIL SharR ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gail Roorda" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, March 05, 2003 4:17 PM Subject: Re: [TNGRAING-L] Another MAYES-ROACH Connection > Shar, > > Here goes, <wheew> I have been trying to get to this message for more than a > week. Shar, Here goes, <wheew> I have been trying to get to this message for more than a week. I was trying to think of a Mayes I could ask about Edward and Sarah and I guess I needed a Roach researcher you <grin> instead. You said: "Gail, > another MAYES Connection is Edward MAYES who md: 17 Feb 1853 Sarah ROACH b: ca 1835 d: pre: 1867 (a dau of Jn Green ROACH ) they had one son William MAYES...., which Edward is this? he was much older than she..." How do you know this <smile>?? and that Edward was much older than Sarah. I think you might have the piece of the puzzle I am missing.. oops I am getting a little a head of myself. I think I will just type out the information on Edward so you and the other Mayes or Roach researchers can see what I am talking about. Edward was born circa 1796 (1850 and 1860 census) in Virginia (probably Henry County) the son of Liggen and Esther Daniel Mayes and the grandson Henry and Phebe ? Mayes. His other grandparents were Edward Daniel, Sr. and Anna ? his wife. (sources Henry Mayes will (1787) Henry County, Virginia. Edward Daniel, Sr, will (1833) Grainger County, Tennessee Will Book 1 page 24.) He married Nancy "Nanie" Greenlee (born about 1898) 23 December 1814 in Grainger County, Tennessee. Edward's household in 1830. (Edward is listed on the same page with his Greenlee in-laws.) Edward Mays household, 1830 U. S. census Grainger County, Tennessee, page 395, line 13. 2 males under 5, 1 male 5-10, 1 male 30-40, 1 female under 5, 2 females 5-10, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 30-40. Edward Mayes household 1840 U. S. census Grainger County, Tennessee, page 102, line 27. (Edward is still listed near his Greenlee in-laws. Besides the only OTHER Edward that I know of (keep this in mind) living in the county at this time, Edward, the son of Dudley was younger, and is undoubtedly the Edward listed next to Dudley on page 119). 2 males 5-10, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 15-20, 1 male 40-50, 1 female 5-10, 2 females 10-15, 2 females 15-20, 1 female 20-30. (Please note, there is no female in the household old enough to be Nanie Greenlee so I think Nanie was quite likely dead by 1840, but so far I have not been able to find any information on this.) Edward's son-in-law, David Yates is listed as HOH on the 1850 Grainger County census. David Yates household, 1850 U. S. census, Grainger County, Tennessee, population schedule, civil district 5, page 34 B, dwelling 475, Family 492. David Yates 23 male Farmer born Tenn Elizabeth 27 female born " Edward Mayes 54 male Farmer born Virg Phebe " 33 female born Tenn Major L. " 14 male born " In 1860 we have: Edward Mayes household, 1860 U. S. census, Grainger County, Tennessee, population schedule, civil district 5, Rutledge post office, page 436B, dwelling 483, family 483, 16 July 1860. Edward Mayes 65 male farmer Phebe 34 female domestic Wm 6 male Now the information I have is that Phebe Mayes never married. You will also note that Phebe's age is given as 34. (or as I read it? One of these spinster ladies who only age a year between censuses?? <smile> On the other hand who knows who answers the census takers questions?? Maybe it was William. <grin>) My transcription also reads (I have no photocopy for Edward's household so maybe I should recheck this entry ) that Edward was born in Tennessee and Edward was almost assuredly born Virginia. (like I said who knows who answers the census takers questions). Hunting for an explanation for William, I checked marriage records and found the following: Edward Mayes married Sarah Roach 17 February 1853 in |Grainger County. So in answer to your question, Shar, I think the Edward who married Green Roach's daughter, Sarah, was Hamilton Roach's father-in-law, Edward Mayes, son of Liggen, the Edward we have been discussing. I think I should just send this on to the list. I have more, but we have Ash Wednesday services tonight, and like I said I have been trying to get this posted for days. Gail in MO

Dear Sheri, <grin> You do have a lot of questions. I do admire your enthusiasm particularly when you are researching on someone else's behalf. Your questions, however, call for long involved answers (with source citations) and I am working on sending my "report" on Edward Mayes/Nanie Greenlee/Sarah Roach to the list to the list. I have promised another researcher that I would do this SOON! (Also I still have your question about Goodwin and Celia's heirs to answer.) I believe I have told everyone on this list sometime in the past that I am the world's sloooowest typist!! So in the meantime some brief answers. I promise I will follow up with some longer answers and where I got the "stuff" You said" "I am looking for the parents of Jane Mayes who married Ruben Groves, Jr." Jane's maiden name was actually HOWELL. Her first husband was James MAYES. Jane "Jenny" "Jincey" HOWELL MAYES GROVE was the daughter of my 4th great grandmother Jane HOWELL IVEY's brother, Henry HOWELL and his wife, Jane O. COLLINS. "Question: Nancy Mayes, daughter of Sherrod/Sherwood (does anyone really know his name?)" Henry Mayes's will says Sherwood I believe (I shall have to look). He is usually listed in the Grainger County records as Sherrod. "married first a Ruben Groves and had a son Ruben Groves." NOT SO, the Nancy MAYES who married Reuben GROVE, Sr. was Henry MAYES's daughter. (Henry was Sherrod's brother.) You said, "This younger Ruben married a Jane Mayes born 1823. Would anyone know who she is from?" As I said Jane MAYES was Henry and Jane O. Howell's daughter. Jane Howell (Junior <grin>) was born circa 1796. I don't know where the gentleman you are helping got the date 1823 except perhaps it is computed from Reuben GROVE Jr's age. Jenny Howell was quite a few years older than her second husband. I forget how many. I shall have to look this up. (Some of those on the list may remember at least a couple of requests for someone to recheck my transcription of the entry for the Reuben Grove, Jr. household on the 1850 Grainger County census for Jane's age. Hey, I now have the census on CD so I can LOOK and see that Jane was considerably older than Reuben, Jr. <grin>) You said: "This is the same Nancy who married John Mayes/Maize/Mayse "Big John" of who's parents I am searching for." Once again Nancy MAYES GROVE was Henry's daughter. Nancy MAYES MAYES ("Big John"s wife) was Shrrod's daughter. As I have told you I do not know who "Big John's" parents were. Bye for Now, Gail in MO
Good Morning Sheri, and List Family, okay, first of all... WE HAVE 2 ANNA / ANN MAYES we have an ANNA MAYES that married DAVID BURNETT (sp) and is said to be found in a 1850 CENSUS in TENNESSEE. living with her husband and children, THEN we have MY GREAT GREAT GRAMMA ANNA MAYES,b:@1813 TN she married DAVID.L. WILLIAMS, they lived in GRAINGER CO, LIBERTY HILL/ WASHBURN TN. area, they are found there in the 1850 CENSUS with their first born daughter MARY born that same year 1850, in 1860 census they are living in that same place, with 2 daughters MARY b:1850 CATHERINE ,b: 1852 <---MY GREAT GRAMMA i also have the marriage date of this couple, now we could say well there was a 'MIXUP' in the fathers, or the husbands name and it's one and the same, ANNA MAYES......... but this CAN NOT be the case, since 1. we have both families living, and in, the 1850 CENSUS........ 2. i know for a fact that ANNA married DAVID.L. WILLIAMS and had my great gramma CATHERINE WILLIAMS, CATHERINE married JOHN WINFIELD SCOTT HELTON (Sr)........ i have the license, they had my grandpa DAVID.L. HELTON who married RUBY ESMERALDA ELEANOR WILSON and they had my mommy BESSIE CATHERINE LOUISE HELTON SO there is the life, of one of the; ANNA MAYES, B;@1813 in both the 1850 and the 1860 CENSUS, SHOWS my ANNA MAYES being born in * 1813 *......... 15 years older than her husband, she died between 1860 and 1865, in the WASHBURN/LIBERTY HILL area, in 1865 my great grandpa DAVID.L. WILLIAMS remarried, and he married MARY MAHULDA JOHNSON, in the 1870 CENSUS, you'll find my great great aunt MARY b:1850 living with him and his new wife MARY, and their new children, and my great gramma CATHERINE WILLIAMS b;1852, was married by the 1870 CENSUS. so she wasn't shown in his home, but my Aunt Mary was. now, i believe my ANNA MAYES to be the daughter of GOODWIN MAYES, since everyone has DUDLEYS daughter ANNA marrying DAVID BURNETT,and they are in the 1850 census, so there HAS TO BE * 2 * seperate ANNA MAYES, I'D BE MOST GRATEFUL IF ANYONE HAS MORE INFORMATION ON THESE * 2 * ANNA MAYES's thanks so much, in kinship, Deborah ~~~~~~~~~~*~~~~~~~~~~ Our Family Website; http://www.geocities.com/jaybessieparton maternal side;Tennessee HELTON/HILTON/HYLTON-COLLINS-WILLIAMS-MAYES-WITT/WHITT/WHYTT/DeWITT-LIPTROT- ROGERS-DAUX/DAWKES-MITCHELL-BURGESS-WILSON-BERRY-ANDRESEN-GARLAND-PAINTER-RO SSER-NEAVIL-SMITH-SATTERFIELD-LAMB-and many others paternal side; Kentucky PARTON/PARTIN-HELTON-FOLEY-HUBBARD-LEIGH/LAY-TRIMBLE-TARTER-DORTER-BALTHSER- FLEMING-LOGAN-HAWKINS-ENGLAND-ENGLE-STRUM-BEYERLE-CAMPBELL-WOODS-MUNCY/MUNCI E-WARREN-UTTERBACK/OTTERBACK-COBB-FISHBACK-LOWE-MC/FARLAND-SHERROD-SUTTON-JO NES-STANFIELD/STANFILL-THOMAS-PORTER-MAILAND-LAUDERDALE-RICHER/RECTOR-HITT-G OLDEN-GREEN/GREENE-and many more Luke 8:10, Make your own Miracles ----- Original Message ----- > I have received information on the children of Goodwin/Gooding and on Dudly. Gail: I appreciate all that you are doing to help this list. If I ask too many of the same questions over it is because I have approached the same printed information from a different direction. Then too, sometimes I just need it drummed into my head because I have had a confusing bit of work to deal with. Never fear, I will most likely ask another question in a different way of which I've already received or seen a post on. I have been focused on certain individuals and I know I tend to over look very important clues given in some answers, because I do not know it applies, at that time. From: "Gail Roorda" Sent: Tuesday, March 04, 2003 10:52 AM Subject: Re: [TNGRAING-L] Jane Mayes and Ruben Groves Jr. > Dear Sheri, You do have a lot of questions. (Also I still have your question about Goodwin and Celia's heirs to answer.) I believe I have told everyone on list this sometime in the past that I am the world's sloooowest typist!! COLLINS. (Gail, Thanks for this information. I know the gentleman didn't have this information as he provided only what I posted to the list.) > "Question: Nancy Mayes, daughter of Sherrod/Sherwood (does anyone really know his name?)" Henry Mayes's will says Sherwood I believe (I shall have to look). He is usually listed in the Grainger County records as Sherrod. (List, I wanted to call Sherwood/Sherrod by his normally known name, hence the question. Same with Goodwin/Gooding.) "married first a Ruben Groves and had a son Ruben Groves." NOT SO, the Nancy MAYES who married Reuben GROVE, Sr. was Henry MAYES's daughter. (Henry was Sherrod's brother.) (Gail, thanks, I'll fix this as well. Perhaps this correction plus a couple of others may lead to other clues.) You said, > "This younger Ruben married a Jane Mayes born 1823. Would anyone know who she is from?" As I said Jane MAYES was Henry and Jane O. Howell's daughter. Jane Howell (Junior ) was born circa 1796. Hey, I now have the census on CD so I can LOOK and see that Jane was considerably older than Reuben, Jr. ) You said: "This is the same Nancy who married John Mayes/Maize/Mayse "Big John" of who's parents I am searching for." Once again Nancy MAYES GROVE was Henry's daughter. Nancy MAYES MAYES ("Big John"s wife) was Shrrod's daughter. (Gail, I apologize for that. I did post a second email after realizing I was not clear in my question as to who the Jane was. My original question looked like I was inquiring about Nancy, of which I was not. I do have Big John Mayes first known wife as being a daughter of Sherrod.) I have told you I do not know who "Big John's" parents were. (Yes, I have come to realize this question may not be answered on a timely basis for the gentleman I am doing this research for. I will not dwell too much on that. I intend to get as much posted correctly and am sending him a printout plus all printed emails I've received for his perusal. I do want everyone to know that I am taking no credit whatsoever in this Mayes research and am sourcing every single person who has provided information with their information. List: When I finish up with this research project for Mr. Tom Mays of Missouri I will let the list know and if anyone needs or wants a printout or floppy of what I've gathered for him, let me know. I also need to know if anyone has any objections to me providing any and all gathered information to the Claiborne Co. Pioneer Project. The Brubakers do research for Claiborne Co., TN pre 1909 and I see there were many Mayes and associated family members who were in Claiborne Co., TN at one time or another. Sheri Sheri P. List, I may not have made my second request as clear as it needed to be. Good Mardi Gras Morning List: Yes, I am in Louisiana and Mardi Gras has kicked off it's final day of celebrating before Ash Wednesday, which begins the Lenten season. It is dreary and drizzly here but after watching the early morning news, the tourists and locals are out in full force in the CBD (Central Business District) of New Orleans, awaiting the oldest and most revered of parades, Rex and Zulu. I am 45 minutes away and am content to read the newspapers or watch the reports on tv. I have received information on the children of Goodwin/Gooding and on Dudly. I wanted to post exactly as I have it on paper, the children's names and information and hope to have some of the confusion cleared up. Although I am doing this for another I want to get as much known correct information before continuing to finish out the work. The spouses listed will be next to the person in brackets. I have: Goodwin or Gooding Mayes 1784-1860 VA married Elizabeth Caruthers/Corruthers 1787-1809, no children noted, married Celia Mitchell ?-1835, no children noted, married Caty/Cathy Kinnon 1792-?, children noted: Edward Mayes ?-1863, Sytha Caroline Mayes (McCarty) ?-?, Anna Mayes ?-? (David Burnett), Jane Mayes 1808-1880 (Joshua Kidwell), Green Berry Mayes 1810-1887. Then it appears Goodwin or Gooding married a Catherine Vineyard, no children noted. Now I have Dudly Mayes 1786-1844, married Elizabeth Daniels and their children listed are: Mary Jane 'Jennie' Mayes 1808-1880 (Joshua Albert Kidwell, Sr.), Green Berry Mayes 1810-1887 (Nancy Ivey, Elizabeth Line), Edward Mayes 1812-1863 (Mahala Jane Jones), Scytha Carolins Mayes 1815-1844 (James F. McCarty), Anna Mayes 1818-1844 (David Burnet), William Mayes 1821-1844, (Winafer Kirk). If anyone can clear up some of the confusion above, please contact me when possible. I understand that there are debates stll on-going of who had whom. I want to assign the children to the correct father and the remaining childen will be left as is. I do not need too much additional information on the above people, only correct lineage. Question: Nancy Mayes, daughter of Sherrod/Sherwood (does anyone really know his name?) married first a Ruben Groves and had a son Ruben Groves. This younger Ruben married a Jane Mayes born 1823. Would anyone know who she is from? This is the same Nancy who married John Mayes/Maize/Mayse "Big John" of who's parents I am searching for. I appreciate all help that everyone has provided to the list. Please continue to post to the list so that others will benefit from the information submitted. Thanks again, Sheri Sheri P. I am interested in only one Ray - that being William Bartlett Ray, b. about 1773 Orange Co. NC, d. 17 Dec 1824 Shelby Co. AL, and then only because he married Ellenor or Ellender Roach, daughter (we think) of James Roach and Ann (possibly Thompson). There are some other Rays in the James Roach line, but I do not actively pursue research on them. I just pass information along to them if I find something I think they would be interested in knowing. Thank You Sylvia >From: "Betty B" <[email protected]> >Reply-To: [email protected] >To: [email protected] >Subject: Re: [TNGRAING-L] David Ray & other Ray's >Date: Sun, 02 Mar 2003 14:29:07 +0000 > >Thank you, SharR ! > >Betty > > > >From: "SharR" >Reply-To: [email protected] >To: [email protected] >Subject: [TNGRAING-L] David Ray & other Ray's >Date: Sat, 1 Mar 2003 16:15:02 -0800 >Marriages for Ray in Grainger Co TN. to 1825 >=================================== >Sarah Harris married John Rhea on March 08, 1797 >Francis Clifton married Aron Roach on July 11, 1798 >Elizabeth Maxwell married Thomas Rhea on February 3, 1802 >Sally Coffee married Benjamin Rhea on February 9, 1802 >Winney Caffey (Winifred Coffee/Coffey?) married David Ray on April 12, 1806 >William Garratt married Caty Ray on January 27, 1807 >Phereby Bidwell married Jacob Ray on October 20, 1807 >Abner Ray married Polley Sparkman on January 8, 1811 >Anny Ray married Levi Sparkman on April 13, 1811 >Mary Arnett married Thomas Ray on August 25, 1815 >Samuel Ray married Angy Sparkman on February 1, 1817 >Jacob Arnet married Ann Coffy on December 11, 1819 >1830 Grainger County, Tennessee Census - ed.
