    3. Is there someone who will do lookups in Grainger Co.? I'm looking for an 1862 court record involving Sarah/Sallie Acuff Dodson/Dotson. It lists 4 of her children who were still living at the time. I think it has to do with her estate or dower. If anyone has access to this type of record, I would like to hear from them. This is one I really need. Thanks! -----Original Message----- From: Conni Braun [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Friday, March 07, 2003 8:25 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [TNGRAING-L] Grainger County Records I hope for everyone's sake that the records were microfilmed. 3. I have also heard that some records have 'disappeared' over the years, but am happy to report that at this time the records are being cleaned up and filmed. People are wearing masks as they work because of bird droppings and all that stuff - anyway, according to reports, they are making good progress. Some they are having to soak in a special solution because they are so brittle and they cannot unfold them until they correct the dried out condition. The state has made some funds available and the building is being repaird to keep the rain out and shelving has been furnished. If I understand correctly, 4 people are working full time on this project and have been for some months. sue --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. 3. Duane: I didn't take it that way but just to let you know that it is happening. That's a bad situation that is going to hurt the rest of us who are searching for documentation about our ancestors. I tend to document everything and there are a number of holes in my family history that I may never be able to find because there are documents which are no longer available to me. 3. Does anyone have a book or information on Mitchell marriages that took place in Grainger County in the 1800s? If so could you take the time to do some postings? I have several family members for which I have no information, especially the females. I am especially interested in marriages for the following: Tabitha, born 1791 William Jr. born 1793 Aquilla born 1795 Isaac born 1800

    1. Re: [TNGRAING-L] Jane May Mayse Ivey
    2. Gail Roorda
    3. Dear Sheri, I am still trying to keep up with all this Mayes "stuff". It is great to see so much interest, but like I said I type very slowly. I will try to keep up with these two separate threads, if I can. <grin> I know you are working hard to correct your corrspondent's data. Anyway I just noticed this. In your letter which appeared on the list February 28, You said: "says but need to read on this). This report indicates that Jane Mayes 1792-1846, sister of Nancy, married Benjamin Ivey 1791-?. I have no other information on Jane." My third great grandmother Jane "Jenny" Mayes Ivy (or Ivey) was still alive in 1870. She is listed on the 1870 Grainger County census and is living with her two unmarried children Susannah "Susan" Ivy and Patrick Birdwll Ivy. I am not sure when she died. The exact or at least approximate death dates of many of Sherrod's children are known and I think it is up to me since I am descended from Jane to find out. <grin> This may involve a trip to Tennessee so I think I will get up tomorrow morning and jsut drive there (probably not.. <wry grin>. Real life does go on doesn't it?) Jane may have been the last of Sherrod's children to die. I am not sure when Jonathon Mayes died though. I will see what I can find out about this. Jane's husband Benjamin died in 1853 in Grainger County (Benjamin Ivy will (1853) Grainger County will book 3:107&108). I am not sure where the date 1846 comes from. Perhaps there is some confusion here between Jane and her mother-in-law Jane Howell Ivy, although Jane Howell Ivey died in 1848 not in 1846. I notice that a lot of researchers have after 1843 9 for Jane Howel Ivy that is. (I think that this came from researchers readiug the last page of Henry Ivy (Ivey)'s Revolutionary pension file. The files were not filmed in any particualr order and in Henry's Revolutionary pension file is deposition by Jane dated February 1848. There is a separate deposition by Jane filed the same date in which Jane testified in her sister=in-laws Jane O. Collins Howells behalf. She died about July of that year. Forgive me for this excursion into the generation proceeding Jane Mayes Ivy, but you also have questions <smile> about the Collinses and the Howells. Bye for Now, Gail Gail in Missouri: > I have a printout which was sent to me by the gentleman I'm helping research his Mays/Maise/Mayes/Mayes/Maize (and others, I'm sure) lines. I see in the snippet below that you have information on a Jane Mayes Ivey. In this printout I have John "Big John" Maize as a second spouse of Nancy Mayes 1788-1830 (daughter of Sherrod it says but need to read on this). This report indicates that Jane Mayes 1792-1846, sister of Nancy, married Benjamin Ivey 1791-?. I have no other information on Jane. I would like to know if there is any mention of a Dolly anywhere in your transcriptions? I hope to find out if Dolly was a nickname for one of Big John's wives, or another wife. > > I also have a copy of what appears to be a marriage contract (or intention of marriage) for John Maize and Nancey Maize dated Jan 11, 1805. John, William Cooper, and Daniel Clayton are bonded for $1250.00 for the marriage. It is Grainger Co., TN. The witness or man who drew up the contract was Samuel D. _rrick. It looks like Carrick but cannot be absoutely sure. > > As always, still seeking East Tennessee Coffey and Jordan information. > > Sheri

    1. Re: [TNGRAING-L] Jane May Mayse Ivey
    2. Sheri P. Kelly
    3. Gail: Thank you for getting back to me on these many questions. I simply never realized how involved this Mayes thing would be, but I also am finding information on my own lines while trying to help others. The worst part is that I cannot have dedicated research time. I have printed out your email and will make additions and corrections to my data concerning your family. I came very close to making a major error in my family linkings (the Mayes) when I assigned the wrong father to Nancy. If you hadn't mentioned Henry was the Jane's father, not Sherrod, who knows what terribly mixed up things I would have done. Thanks for that. BTW, I had started my Collins research in 1998 when I happened to try to help another on the Coffey lines. Then somehow the Coffeys took over until I had a 2001 reunion whereas I was appointed the McCool family historian. At that time I dropped all other research and dedicated 1 full year at about 20 hours a week doing McCools. So by reunion 2002 I had a nice piece of work which cost me $52 each to print out to donate to the 4 oldest of each family represented there. I then began back on the Coffeys and chose to research any Jordan (any spelling) line to all Coffeys to try to determine who Caswell Coffey's wi! ves were and who could be the possible mother of my 3rd ggf, Thomas Nelson Coffey. I became so overwhelmed with grabbing bits and pieces of crumbs of Tennessee Jordans that I was glad to take a break and try to help Tom Mays. Tom's ancestor was Frederick Mays who married Martha Cassandra Jordan. Martha Cassandra was a daughter of Tilman Jordan. Must go. I will be posting questions to the list for the most part in hopes it will continue to trigger questions and queries and corrections for the Mayes researchers. I also keep watch for all my connections. Thanks again, Sheri --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Tax Center - forms, calculators, tips, and more

    3. Dear Shar, You said ".. also the Robert OWENS + Nancy MAYES Owens listed in Edward's Estate...was the bro of Clarka OWENS who md: John ROACH Jr.( GG-Grandparents of my husband) I do know who Clarka and John were..I noticed them on the 1860 census when I was looking for Hamilton and Julia Caroline. This is all so interesting. I did vaguely know that there were connections between the Mayes and Roach families. Also I have been reading msgs on this list from various Roach researchers over the years <smile> It is nice to talk to one of you and have the opportunity to share some information. You said: "they are all buried in Greene Co. MO except Hamilton ROACH & Julia C. MAYES-ROACH who stayed and died in Grainger.." Do you have DODs for Hamilton and Julia Caroline Roach? Gail

    2. Sheri P. Kelly
    3. Good Evening, List: Questions I have on some Mayes in order to clarify my own thoughts are: A James Mayes married Jane Howell (Thanks Gail). This Jane Howell's parents were Henry Howell and Jane O. Collins. Would anyone know who James Mayes parent(s) were, and does anyone know which line of Collins does Jane O. come from? Has anyone determined Jane Howell's date of birth? She was older than her second husband, Ruben Groves, Jr. I have also seen the Ruben Groves, Sr and Jr noted as Graves. Is it Groves or Graves?
