Dear Eleanor, I am NO expert in original research regarding Civil War prisoners (and I unintentionally misled you.) How I know more of them died in camps than in battle is more through general research into their families. Some of the families I am searching have many researchers who share information. For instance it is commonly is known that Marmaduke Mayes son of the "other" Edward Mayes of Grainger County died at Camp Lookout. (This was a Union Prison Camp. It seems that most of Dudley Mayes descendents were Confederate sympathizers as I know of their service, but this does not necessarly apply to all the Mayeses as far as I can tell.) Marmaduke died and was buried at Camp Lookout. I have seen a listing in those buried in Camp Lookout online. I surely would have saved this URL, I will check through my favorites and see if I can locate it. I am not sure whether you are looking for soldiers who died in prison camp or those who survived and came home. Like I said I haven't done tons of original research into this topic. My great great grandmother's Louisa Gray Mayes's brother-in-law Edward Tate was supposed to have died in a CONFDERATE prison camp, but I am certain I got this from the Tate section in Leaves From the Family Tree, a common book found in many genealogy libraries including mine in St. Joe. Somehow I knew James S. Kidwell died at Andersonville although I am not descended from the Kidwells. I could go on and on, but most of what I knw comes from pretty common references. That is why I asked for help on James S. Kidwell. Probably I should do more checking with original sources rather than just passing this stuff on. Nevertheless as I said it seems that many of my family "connections" died in prison camps and the only "cousin" I can think of that died in battle was Calvin Ivey who died at Vicksburg. Calvin was the son of my third great grandfather Benjamin (Ivey)Ivy's brother John and his wife Elizabeth Kidwell. (Elizabeth Kidwell would have been James Stirling Kidwell's half sister.) However, you have piqued my curiosity. There is a vast trove of Civil War information online. However, it is all over the place, and sometimes difficult to find. I have already found one truly great source and I am going to look some more and then send this information on to the list. Shar you said, "I just added the info on Sarah Roach's parents, hope thats okay( see below)" I don't mind at all. <grin> this is a group Grainger County list project. I meant to put in Sarah's parents myself (they were Hamilton's parents too, of course. and I will add Catherine Wolf and Reverand John Kidwell These people were so interconnected I really try to find out about the spouse's parents). Also I just typed in Grace's information without citations. I need to go back and do that some more work (this is a work in progress). Perhaps I should NOT have said "probably not Edward", because I think it COULD have been Edward. Actually I did think it interesting that Edward remarried after being so a widower for some time even before I knew about Sarah's other children. Or it sunk in about Edward and Sarah and Sarah's older children. Actually you all have been discussing this since 1998 and it just all went right over my head. I did catch the reference to Edward, of course and I think I knew Edward was Liggen and Esther's son. The reason I know you have been discussing this for years is because I have all my Grainger List mail since 1998 (at least the significant parts). I ran across some of your early postings when I was looking to find out who parked the RV beside the schoolhouse and copied records for three days. <grin> I was wrong it wasn't Roach researchers, it was some of the Mallicoats. <smile> Now that's dedication, and three people working for three days can get a lot of photocopying done. I hope to get out there someday myself.<sigh> Anyway I certainly haven't discounted Edward being the older children's father. However, as you said the question is where was Sarah in 1850? Edward, Major and Phebe are listed with David and Elizabeth Mayes Yates. Quite a mystery here. Gail

Tina , In your Census records for Grainger does the index show Sarah Roach living with any other family ? prob in 5th Dist ?....I just checked 1850 at Ancestry.com...but didn't find, her although, I have searched before and found them not on their indexs, but know they were on Census Thanks SharR
I would like to know if anyone would have any information on an Elvira Dalton who married a James M. Hill. Elvira's birth/death dates are about/between the years of 1825-1880. I believe that she could be from Graninger County, Tennessee. Barbara __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Gail Yes, I would be interesting to find out....I had wondered if it could possibly be Edward MAYES....because I do not know where Sarah Roach was on the 1850 Census....who might she be living with?, she was not with her parents whom you might add to your Pedigree Chart..... they were Father: John Green ROACH Mother: Margeret Elizabeth MCDANIEL <<< It would also be interesting to find out who was the father of Sarah ROACH > MAYES's two oldest children. Probably not Edward. >>> Gail
Dear Sheri, Once again I HEARTILY recommend checking out some of the great URLs I have already sent you. (Also I believe that Ray sent you J. T. I know there is a lot of criticism about what the internet has done to genealogy, but some of the available information on Sherrod really illustrates the web's best use. Sherrod's son William Mayes's will is online at Selena's website. http://uneedspeed.net/~sdulac/WMayesWilliam1853.htm William's son Willam Smith Mayes family bible record is online at Selena's site: http://uneedspeed.net/~sdulac/BIBMayesWlliamS.htm as is that of another son Joel Crowder Mayes http://uneedspeed.net/~sdulac/BIBMayesJoelC.htm Also see deed record of William Mays the Father-in-Law of Sherrod's son William (YES, this IS very confusing) online at Selena's site: http://uneedspeed.net/~sdulac/ESTMayWBiggerstaff1818.htm There is a picture of William Mayes's tombstone (son of Sherrod) online at J. Grace, Gail, Debra, et al, I have not read all of the Mayes messages, but thought I should jump in when the Kidwells came up. One of my grandfather Cameron's 2nd cousins married James Wesley Taylor Kidwell. Here is information on this line which I extracted from "Grainger County Tennessee and its People 1796-1998". I did not extract the information on the other Kidwells, only on those who are descended from James Wesley Taylor and Sara/Sarah Virginia (Cameron) Kidwell. I can check the book for other Kidwell data if that is still needed. One of J. W. T. and S. V. Kidwell's descendants married one of my distant Moore cousins. They live in Rutledge. From "Grainger County Tennessee and its People 1796-1998" (I'll have to get you the article and page number) Sara Virginia Cameron [daughter of Frederick C. Cameron and Mary E. I have additional information from other sources on James Wesley Taylor Kidwell and Sarah Virginia (Cameron) Kidwell and their descendants. I would be interested in exchanging information on this branch of the Kidwell line if you all have more information about their descendants. Gail, do you have anything on them in the file which you referenced: "My John Kidwell file which I pulled yesterday includes a 55 page descendency report." My other connections to the Mayes family are by marriage and I have not researched the Mayes surname. My great, great grandfather James Cameron's second wife, by whom he had no children, was Rachel M. Dear researchers, I considered not even including John Mayes in this family group although I believe that he is Edwatd's son. (I might also have written to various researchers on this list that I have gotten really wary of "marrying off" various members of the Mayes family solely on the basis of a marriage record due to the Mayes tendency to give their children the same names.) However, the oldest child listed in John and Mary's houshold in 1850 was Jesse L. aged 5. There was also a James G. <grin> aged 3. There were Hodges living close to the Edward Mayes family (BTW the name was spelled Hodges. There were Hodge families and Hodges families in Grainger County and I am not sure how or even IF they are all connected.) Anyway I DO think that John IS the John who married Mary Hodges. The marriage took place 28 October 1843 (approximately the right date). I don't think that the fact that John was designated as John, Jr. on the marriage means much. Even at this time the Grainger County records still use Jr. to designate older and younger people of the same name rather than just father and son. FURTHERMORE Eli Greenlee was bondsman for this marriage. However, I did want to include a word of caution re John's relationship to Edward. Also I have been unable to find out what happened to Major Mayes. OR to little William son of Edward's marriage to Sarah Roach although I do agree with Shar that it would be interesting to find out. There was also apparently another son, but so far I have found this son only listed on the internet (no sources) and I want to check this out a little further. It would also be interesting to find out who was the father of Sarah ROACH MAYES's two oldest children. Probably not Edward. OTOH it is interesting to speculate as to why Edward remarried after being so long a widower. It has been my experience that widowers either marry again very quickly or never remarry at all. Gail
Re: Sources I can't make the URL for Shiloh Cemetery where James G. and Martha McDaniel Mayes are buried work today. The Cemetery was transcribed by Sam Mayes a descendent of James G and Martha. It doesn't look like Sam has had much time to work on his web page for a very long time, but the cemtery URL still worked a couple of days ago. I do have a printout as you can see. (I just print everything out. The printer runs all the time around here. My John Kidwell file which I pulled yesterday includes a 55 page descendency report.<grin). I hope the cemetery transcription disappearance is just temporary or that Sam has moved it somewhere else. It was really neat and illustrative of the fact that internet can be a serious genealogy source. However, the worst problem is that links tend to vanish. You won't be able to make the genealogy.com URLS work either. I considered waiting before I posted the family groupd, but decided to go ahead. There was a message at GenForum that they would be down for routine maintenance today. Gail

Good Morning List: I am back with another Mayes question. I have a Nancy May b 10/11/1813, d 11/01/1907. She married a William Mayes in Sumner Co., TN on 05/31/1847. Would anyone know which William Mayes married her? This William's first wife was mary Hobdy. I have a printout which indicates that William Franklin Mayes was the man who married her but information I already have indicates that a Nancy May married William, son of Sherrod. This William's first spouse was Susannah Mays. Are there two Nancy May women? I have seen posts on the list which could indicate this and would like to clear up my own confusion if possible. Thanks in advance for any help anyone will share. Sheri Sheri P. Kelly [email protected] ' Genealogy is Perpetual' VA, NC, TN, & KY: COFFEY-COLLINS-GREEN-HICKS-JONES-JORDAN-PERRY-RUSSELL. Donna - You might also want to take a look at the Grainger Co. book if you haven't already done so. There are several Ballinger/Ballenger, and only one Trogden - that being Elvira Trogden that married Rice Coffey 17 June 1839. Looks like the submitter reports Rice as being the son of Meredith Coffee, who was an ancestor of --- what else? --- a Roach. Thomas Edward Roach published a newsletter of sorts about the Roach family for some years. I think I have copies of most, if not all, of those publications. He died - I don't know how many years ago - and 12+ years ago, the publication was no longer exclusively Roach. I don't know whether or not it is still in existance. Betty B. Looks like Grace has taken care of business, so I won't respond further unless I am asked to look at the Grainger County book anyway. Betty B. From: "Betty B" <[email protected]> Reply-To: [email protected] To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [TNGRAING-L] The family of Edward Mayes Date: Mon, 10 Mar 2003 10:59:11 +0000 I mentioned the book in connection with a post on Adkins/Atkins. There are several entries in the book for Kidwell. I have to go to work, so I don't have the time this morning, but if someone else does not, then I will answer this afternoon. Most of the pieces in the book are written by descendants of the families, but most of them give a name and mailing address, and I saw one that mentions Bittle/Biddle and Greenlee and Rev. John Kidwell that specifically states she would be happy to hear from anyone about these family lines. Kathy B. Isbell, 717 Brookgreen Terrace, Graham NC, 27253. Later, Betty From: "Gail Roorda" <[email protected]> Reply-To: [email protected] To: [email protected] Subject: [TNGRAING-L] The family of Edward Mayes Date: Sun, 9 Mar 2003 23:10:39 -0600 Debra said, "His sons fought for the Union in the 49th KY." This has nothing to do with the Rookards, but with the children of Edward Mayes. This morning as I was getting ready to post my information on Edward's family to the list (I DO need to check this information re Janes S. Kidwell out some more) and it occured to me that Mary Mayes husband, James S. Kidwell was most likely dead by the time the 1866 land document was filed. I know that it supposedly says Mary Mayes wife of James S. Kidwell (and undoubtedly does say this since I have a grreat deal of faith in Larry's transcriptions). However, Mary was most likely the "widow" of James S. Kidwell. Note that the reference to Mary is different from the other entries regarding the daughters and sons-in-law. Every now and then various pieces of infromation come together in my tiny mind. <grin> There was a Catherine Kidwell aged 62 listed in James and Mary Mayes Kidwell's household in 1850. I believe that this would be Catherine Wolf Kidwell second wife (and widow) of John Kidwell. I am not descended from Reverand John (that I know of anyway), but my lots of my relatives intermarried with this family. It runs in my mind James S. Kidwell died in Andersonville Prison. (It seems from my research that a lot more of my relatives and their connections died in various prison camps north and south than died in battle.) Somebody mentioned Grainger County Tennessee and its People 1796-1998". I understand there is a section on the Kidwells and I wonder if someone could do a lookup and see if there is anything about James S. or James Stirling Kidwell. Why would the reference to the Rookards who were Union men trigger this msg, (I am actually wondering how coherent this post is <grin> since it is getting very late here.) Apparently Mary Mayes's husband was a Confederate, however, the Greenlees (remember Mary Mayes Kidwell's mother was Nancy Greenlee) were Union men (I did find some interesting things about the Greenlees online).
