    1. Re: [TNGRAING-L] Civil War Units
    2. sue
    3. Connie - I checked in the things I have and did not find Gnbry Mitchell in the Civil War (Found one in the War of 1812). However, I have not been keeping up with all of this because it is not my family and while looking on the inet to see if I saw any likely sources, I came across this that I thought I would post in case you didn't have it. sue This is from Goodspeed, but it is not from TN History - it is from MISSOURI History. Message: History Of Hickory, Polk, Cedar, Dade And Barton Counties, Missouri, 1889. Published by Goodspeed: Pgs 831, 832 William H. Mitchell, farmer and stock-raiser, of Rock Prairie Township was born in Grainger County, Tenn., in 1836. His father, Preston Mitchell, was probably born in New York in 1808, but came with his parents when quite young, to Grainger County, Tenn., where he was reared and married, and in 1855 came to Dade County, where he died in 1875; he was a farmer and deputy sheriff in Tennessee, and justice of the peace in Dade County some years. His mother, daughter of Edward Churchman, was born in Grainger County, Tenn., in 1812, and died in Tennessee in 1878, where she went in 1876. His grandfather, Greenberry Mitchell, was English, and his grandmother German; both came when young to the United States, afterward working to pay their passage, and were among the first settlers of Grainger County, where Mr. Mitchell died a year or two before the war, at the age of seventy-three. He was a soldier in the War of 1812, was justice of the peace many years, and among the wealthiest men in the county at his death. The subject of this sketch, the third of a family of six, was educated at the common log school-houses, and, coming with his parents to Dade County, in 1856 he married Elizabeth, daughter of Archie and Mary Poindexter, natives of Kentucky, who came to Dade County about 1845, where they died. They have ten children, three sons and five daughters living. Since marriage he has lived on his present farm of 265 acres, it then having five acres cleared, whereas now there are 150 under cultivation. He served about two and a half years in the Union Army; was in Company E, Seventy-sixth Enrolled Missouri Militia about six months, in the Provisional service some six months, then twenty months in the United States service, Company E, Fifteenth United States Cavalry, in Southwest Missouri, and, having been captured in Jasper County, after one day and night was exchanged. He is a Republican in politics, and religiously a Presbyterian; his wife being a Cumberland Presbyterian. --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. 3. I know that my 3rd great grandfather, Greenberry Mitchell, was living in Grainger County, TN and served in the Civil War but I have not been able to locate him on any Civil War sites. Would my fellow listers check any resources they might have and see if they can locate any information about him? His name could have been listed as Green Berry, Green B. or simply G.B. Mitchell. He was born July 25, 1830 and died April 2, 1895 and is buried in the Mitchell Cemetery outside Blaine, TN. Many thanks. Conni Mitchell Braun

Hopefully your kindness helps others on this list as they read about my stumbling around the www (wide world of where?). I have been to Selena's website and it is bookmarked. I simply did not go far enough into the other areas to check. Then too, there are connections I am not aware of at one point but realize (way too much later) that I should have gathered that information for future reference. I also see where you have contributed to Selena's information. I appreciate your help greatly. 1. [TNGRAING-L] Frederick Mayes, son of Big John Mayes and Jane May
    2. Sheri P. Kelly
    3. Gail, and List: I cannot recall if I responded to this: -------------------------------------------------- """"I need to find my papers to see who lived where. However Frederick (son of Big John) did move to, and live in Trigg Co., KY. Of course he would have been a young child were his full siblings."""" However, I find I have a question for you. Today I decided to look at the Kentucky Vital records index to see if any of Big John's children lived long enough to have a death certificate (I thought it unlikely.) I did not find Thomas or David or Wm Mayes. However, when I did a search on Mays I found a "Fredink Mays". Actually I thought that Frederick s/o Jane May and Big John remained in the Grinager/Hamblen County area and that I had seen him on later censuses. """"Without doing additional research, I can tell you there was also a Frederick May who married Elizabeth, Big John's daughter and they may have remained in Grainger Co., TN or a surround area. Also I believe there was yet another Frederick May in the area, perhaps a son of Peter May. I have not followed up on either one of these. Actually I though perhaps Peter could be a sibling of Big John and this would make Elizabeth the first cousin of said Frederick. First cousins married often as you know. Small gene pool."""" However, "Fredink" is the right age to be Frederick and i wonder if Frederick moved to Trigg County like his half brothers. I am hoping you can enlighten me. -------------------------------------------------- Frederick Mayes, son of "Big" John Mayes and Jane May did go to Trigg Co., KY with his mother and siblings. He married Martha Cassandra Jordan, daughter of Tilman Jordan and Cassandra Unknown, born c 1849 and died 1919. They had three children. The gentleman for whom I am doing this volunteer research is a grandson of this same Frederick. If anyone has any Jordan information I would welcome knowing about them, especially any associated with this Mayes family or the Coffey familes. 2. I'm desperately hoping that someone can help me find the family of my ggGrandfather John KELLEY / KELLY. His date and place of birth, based on IL and WI Census Records, was about 1816 in TN. He was married by 1844 when his first of 7 sons was born in Lyme, Carroll Co., IL. His wife was Barbery (Barbara) Jane or Jane Barbery (Barbara) Davis b. 1825 in Manchester, OH. By 1855, they were living in either Sauk County or Monroe County where their last son was born, my great Grandfather, Jefferson Fredrick KELLEY / KELLY. By 1859, Barbara (Barbery) was remarried to a Richard Sutcliff and living in Wellington, Monroe Co., WI and is listed on the 1880 census as Jane B. Sutcliff. Does anyone know of a KELLEY /KELLY family that moved to IL in the early 1800's? or connect to this line? Thank you for any help, tips, etc. you can provide. 2. Sheri P. Kelly
    3. List: I have the daughter of Big John Mayes, Nancy Mayes marrying John Joyce, the son of John Joyce and Lucy Edwards Joyce. This marriage between John and Nancy occured 12/27/1836 in Grainger Co., TN. Their son Wilson married Mary Mayes on 11/15/1859 in Stewart Co., TN. I have been provided with the information that this Mary Mayes is also the daughter of Big John Mayes. This means that Wilson Joyce married his own maternal aunt. This same Mary Mayes Joyce also married Richard Solomon (born 1857 Trigg Co., KY) after Wilson died in 1877. This second marriage occured 02/26/1878. Would anyone know any details on the above, corrections, suggestions, or directions are very welcome. 1. [TNGRAING-L] Sarah Randles and Daughters
    2. Would anyone on this list have any information about a Sarah Randles?  At this time I do not know to whom she was married, but she did have two daughters.  Mary Randles was married to Calvin McGee and was living in Jefferson County in the 1880 census.  In the same census Laura Randles was married to Richard Haworth and was also living in Jefferson County. I do not have the census for Grainger County for any year, but I would appreciate any help as to which Randles she was married too. Laura and Richard Haworth were married in 1879 in Grainger County, but lived in Jefferson County having 5 children......Dora, Ladoska, Charlie, Owen, and Rachel. If it is the same Sarah Randles, according to Grainger County Death Records she died at the age of 80 in 1917. Any leads on Sarah and her daughters would be greatly appreciated. Other than the above information it seems to be impossible to find anything else on Sarah, Mary and Laura. Thank you..........Pam

    1. [TNGRAING-L] Hammock or Hamic family
    2. I saw Sheri's message on the Grainger list concerning Sarah Magee, who was the daughter of Zara Magee and wife of John Mayes. Is there a Magee family in Grainger County in the early 1800's? I have a Garrett Martin Hammock whose wife is said to have been Nancy Magee. Garrett (or Martin, as he was known) and Nancy & family were in Grainger in 1850 and by 1860 in Union County. Nancy would have been born abt 1813 and their oldest child was born July 15, 1835. I don't find them in any of the Grainger marriage records. Of course, if they married in Claiborne County, the record is in the first marriage book, which is lost. This couple had 4 sons who fought in the Federal Army from Union County. Upon entering the army they were registered as HAMIC rather than Hammock, and Hamic they have remained. Two of the sons went to Missouri after the War, and it is in an old history of Dade County MO that the name Nancy Magee was found, listed as the mother of Judge George W Hamic. I would appreciate any info about Magee's in the Grainger County area, and would also like to hear from any Hamic or Hammock researchers. Nancy Cassada Nelson Bordentown NJ

I hope to be able to have dedicated research time this weekend. By chance would anyone have any information on the Rebecca Mayes who married James Stubblefield on 04/12/1850 Hawkins Co., TN, with William K. Mayes as security?
