List: I have found an Andrew Mayes, born about 1710 Scotland, died about May 1754 in Lancaster Co., PA. His spouse was Rebecca McFarland born 4/14/1720 in Philadelphia Co. PA. They married about 1735 in Lancaster Co., PA. After Andrew's death she married 1775-1777 to a Mr. Samuel McElhenny. In this Andrew's will (04/16/1754, proved 6/27/1754) it mentions children named: James, Mary, Rachel, Rebecca, Margaret, and Susanna. James and Rachel are both aged 14-21. Their guardian is James Starret. Thomas Mayes. brother to Andrew, is appointed guardian over the rest of the children. Other information mentions that Kerns Starret is Mary Mayes husband and that Susanna died under age. Also mentioned is "Brother, Thomas Mayes was Scottish, and lived also in Paxtang Township, Lancaster Co. PA. Many of Thomas' descendants moved to SE US. Thomas married Margaret Houston in Lancaster Co., PA and died there in 1798." Here is some information on the children of Rebecca McFarland an! d Andrew Mayes: James Mayes b c 1736 Lancaster Co., PAMary (Maria) Mayes b c 1738 Lancaster Co., PA, married Cairns (Kerns) Sterrett.Rachel Mayes b c 1739 Lancaster Co., PARebecca Mayes b c 1741 Lancaster Co., PA married Johnston Elliott.Margaret Mayes b c 1742 Lancaster Co., PA married John Murray.Susanna Mayes b c 1744 Lancaster Co., PA, died between 1756-1759 Lancaster Co., PA. Karen, and List: At least one of the Mayes lines I've read up on came from Amelia Co., VA to or through Grainger, married in Knox Co., TN, then went to Williamson Co., TN to reside for a bit before heading out to Texas. Could it be that in the early 1800's this was merely a route most easily traveled? Would anyone on the list be aware of the routes west from the VA areas in question?Sheri [email protected] wrote:Interesting the way Amelia co VA has turned up. On 28 October 1762, John sold the 318 acres he bought from James Mitchell in 1741. John Cook of Amelia paid him 200. Ann, wife of John Craddock, relinquished her dower right. The same day, John and Ann bought 120 acres on Flat Creek and Little Creek from William Childrey and his wife, Sarah, for 50. Two days later they bought 130 acres on the upper side of Flat Creek from John Mayes and his wife, Elizabeth. This last purchase became controversial. The land had belonged had to William Mayes Sr., the grandfather of John Mayes. John Mayes knew that his father, William Mayes Jr., had inherited the land and presumed that he would inherit it from his father. Yet at the time of the sale he did not own the land. To avoid controversy, on 29 March 1770, William Mayes Jr. of Halifax County sold the land again to John Craddock for the nominal price of five shillings. Ironically, according to an estate inventory of William Mayes recorded in Amelia County 2 January 1775, John Craddoc! k was the administrator of the estate.Virginians - The Family History of John W. I also took a picture of an old 2-story house, sitting up on the bank, near the road.As you turn onto Black Fox from Liberty Hill Church,it is on the left side of the road, but if you go from Black Fox Bridge,,,the house is on the right.I was wondering you lived there also.I kinda thought that it might be an old Beeler homestead, since it was near the creek.Does anyone know where the old Beeler Mill stood that use to be over there? I wondered if it was near the waterfall area. Also I took another beautiful picture of an old house, and someone still lives there,it is also a 2 story, located in the Dutch Valley area.Who lives there? I took some pictures of the old school or church house that was in Dutch Valley. If anyone would like any of the pictures, just let me know. Tina Lephew Cooke Union Co.TN
