Tina: When you have time I would really appreciate it if you would check your marriage books for a marriage between Rosanna or Rose Ann Ramey and John Houston Dalton. Would you also check for a marriage of Susan Tanner and John Ramey. Would appreciate it if you could check for anyone under the surnames of Dalton, Ramey and Tanner. My grgrgrandmother Rosanna was born in Union County and to my knowledge was married there sometime around 1882. But I am searching for any of the above surnames that were in the area since we also have ancestors from Muskingum Co., Ohio. Thanks for your time and any help you can give me. Tina, I noticed on this list where you said you had 2 Grainger Co Marriage Books, If you have the time could you look and see if there are any Marriage listings for Andrew Jackson Hammock born 7-6-1876. He once married Alice Burcham and Rachel Mink, I have never been able to find proof of these marriages, Andrew Is the son of Levi Hammock and the G. Grandson of Pleasant Hammock. If you have a listing for Andrew or any other Hammock In Grainger Co, I would really appreciate you letting me know. Thank you so much, you are such a great help to everyone on the list and have helped me so much in the past. I want you to know I really appreciate you. Thanks so much, Connie
Joan Marie, I noted the 1850 and 1860 census records also. Jane and Jacob Harbin are living with Absalom and Jane Miller in 1850 which does not give relationships. I also noted the difference in place of birth reported in 1850 and 1870/1880. The state of birth is not always reported the same from one census to another. So one cannot presume that it is the same or a different Jane Harbin in 1850 and 1870/80. However, the ages and location are very close and there are not many Harbins in the area.. It is probable that Absalom or Jane reported the place of birth in 1850 or that whoever reported it was wrong. It is possible that Jane and Jacob came to Tennessee at a very early age and did not know that they were born in Virginia. One possiblity might be that Jane and Jacob are Jane's children by an earlier marriage and that Absalom is her second husband. However, I did not find a marriage record for them either. Without a marriage record, it might also be possible to confirm this if there is a probate record of a Mr. Harbin naming widow Jane and two children Jane and Jacob. Or if there is some other record indicating Jane had been married before. Another possibility is that these are a niece and nephew or some other relatives of Absalom or Jane who are now living with them. If they were Jane's children from an earlier marriage or someone else's children, this might explain the difference in reported place of birth, too. Further research on "brother?" Jacob's line might produce some results. If Absalom Miller has a will or probate record, that might indicate the relationship of these children in his household. Further research on Jane Miller or Jane Harbin or Samuel Harbin or his sister or her son might help, too. It looks like it is going to be a difficult trail to follow. Are you researching all Harbins or are these people related to you in a known way? Ross Cameron >>> [email protected] 06/26/03 12:41AM >>> Tina Cooke & Ross Cameron, Thank you for your replies. I had not thought of those kids with Jane HARBIN on the 1870 & 80 as being born out of wedlock. Actually I do show a Jane age 12 (instead of 10) & her ?bro Jacob 9 in Dist 2 of Grainger Co. in 1850 Would Bean's Sta have been in Dist. 2 then? They said then that they were b in VA (as opposed to TN) & the people they were living with were b in VA too. The Jacob is possibly in Rutledge in 1870 & Dist 4 in 1880, but the state is TN same as Jane said. No, I don't know Samuel's or Jane's whereabouts after 1880 - they could have gone anywhere. I have the Harbin burials from vol 2 of the cemetery records, but no other deaths and no births or marriages for Grainger, hence I would like any HARBINS - male or female - listed in other books. NC to Alice "Ally" COFFEY, they were found in Hawkins Co., TN along with several of John's siblings and most likely other relatives. Hi Joan Marie, Tennessee did not begin recording births until 1908. I checked two different publications of Grainger County Marriage which cover the time period before 1870. There are a couple of marriages for grooms named Harbin, but none with a bride named Jane. Although census information is not always correct, in the 1880 Census Jane Harbin is recorded as being single and not married. If this is correct then it would appear that her two children were born out of wedlock. In 1880, there is also a grandson age 1 living with her which I presume would be the child of her 19-year-old single daughter M. E. who was in her household in both 1870 and 1880. Do you know where Samuel Harbin was after this date? Do you have a date and place of death for him? If he died at a time and in a place where death certificates were issued, that might list his parents' names. I don't have anything on that particular HARBIN, but I do have some Harbins and am sending info along, as we never know what little tidbit will help! James Judson Cooper married Cordelia Harbin 12 December 1893, Grainger Co. TN. James Judson was of the William S. Roach line, and William S. was the son of John Roach md. Sarah Roman(s). John lived near Bean Station, and his will states it was made there. John Alexander Roach md 2) Hattie Pearl Biddle, the daughter of George Biddle and Mary Harbin. He is also of the William S. Roach line. James Reuben Roach md. 2) Elizabeth Harbin ca 1886. He was a brother to John Alexander Roach, so also of the William S. Roach line, but James Reuben moved from Grainger Co. TN to Jacksonville IL and I'm pretty sure he married Elizabeth Harbin there. In fact, I also think she was born there. There seems to be a long association between this line of the Roach family and the Harbin family, and that may be the reason James Reuben went to IL after the death of his first wife, Carolyn Watts. William S. and most of his children came to Texas in the late-1880s or early-1890s, where his brother, Absalom Roach (my g-g-grandfather) had come in late-1855. James Reuben's daughter with Carolyn Watts (Lydia Porter Roach) came to Texas with William S. as a small child. After he died, she was reared by my g-g-grandparents, Absalom & Melvina Jane Cardwell Roach. Hope this helps someone. Betty B. Lists: I am looking for any information known on any Trent and Baker marrige and any other information, mainly Jefferson Coffey Baker and Manila Trent. Also know that Jefferson's mother was named Mary Coffey. I believe that Manila died and Jefferson remarried to a Collin(s). Most of this occured in Hancock Co., TN near or in Sneedville, 1800-1850.
