    3. Johannes Meerbodt [the last name has several spellings.... it basically translates from the German to mean someone from or from near a swamp] was the "old man" of the clan. He was a shoemaker by training, but at some point indentured himself to an auger maker in his hometown of Hanua. The story has it that he made and sold various things on the side, and that when he had squirrelled away enough, he bought passage to America. He arrived in Philadelphia in 1784. He went to work for a Quaker family named Inman from Lancaster County. The deal was that he'd work a few years for them, then would be given a parcel of land and an animal to work the farm. After about a year, he eloped with the Inman's daughter Sarah, and they moved to South Carolina. Her family shunned her since she married a non-Quaker. In 1803, Johannes received his American citizenship, at which time he appears to have begun using an Americanized form of his name, John Marbut. John & Sarah Inman Marbut had several children, one of whom was John Jr, another of whom was Daniel. Most of the children migrated to Giles Co., TN by the late 1830's. John, Jr., married Ann Thomas of SC. They had Eodus Everline Marbut, born in 1832, in SC. This Oda married Peterson McGill in Giles Co. about 1850. Oda had an uncle, Daniel Marbut, who had a daughter who was also named Eodus Everline. This Oda was born in the 1840's and was not Peterson's wife. If I recall, she appears not to have married, and is buried somewhere in North Alabama. Peterson McGill's wife Oda appears to have died in childbirth in 1870, giving birth to a daughter whom Peterson named Oda. Later, Peterson married a third time, to Sarah Sherwood, who died in 1873 without issue. Peterson married in 1873 for a fourth time, to Catherine Daly of Limestone Co., AL. She & Peterson had several children before his death in 1888, one of whom was named Mahala, apparently after his first wife Mahala Long. Catherine lived until at least 1912, at which time she was still drawing a widow's pension from Peterson's CSA service. Interestingly, none of the cemetary books for any of the four counties in which Peterson McGill lived during his life (Lauderdale & Limestone in Alabama, Giles and Lawrence in Tennessee) have listings for him or any of his four wives, though many of his 17(!) children are there, principally in Oxford Cem (Giles) and Booth Chapel. I suspect some of these folks are buried in some of the many graves that have just rocks in the cemetary near Puncheon Camp church, where Peterson was a member for over 30 years.
