Just speculation, but William Smith may have been Primitive Baptist. Daniel Marbut's sister, Oda, was my 3rd great-grandmother. She & her husband, Peterson McGill, were members of the Puncheon Camp Baptist Church of Christ, which was basically Primitive Baptist. Other Marbuts (not necessarily Daniel, though, I just don't know) were also PB's. The patriarch of the Marbut family, Johannes Meerput, came to Lancaster Co., PA from Germany in 1784. Coming from Germany, it is likely that he was Catholic or "Evangelisch" (e.g., Lutheran). The family with which he stayed in PA (whose daughter he married) was Quaker, though it is clear from the family history that Johannes and his wife did not retain an identity as Quakers after they moved to SC (ca. 1803).
