Greetings Giles County Rootsweb List! I'm new to the list, and just thought I'd introduce myself. My name is Jane Gilbert, and I currently live in Bel Air, MD. My father, Lewis Harold Gilbert, was born in Prospect, TN, but moved to Akron, OH as a young child. Here are the surnames I'm researching with first names that follow in ascending generations: GILBERT Lewis Harold ->Russell->Tazwell->Cary->David->Thomas->Caleb RUSSELL Eudora->maybe James or Jarvis (the census record is hard to read) COLE Martha Pearl->Lewis Houston BALCH Elizabeth->Hiram->Archibald->John I've already encountered one challenging problem in this research...Lewis Houston Cole, my great-grandfather, was apparently born to a single woman. He was raised by Margaret Cole Lawrence (aka "Aunt Peggy") and her husband Tom Lawrence in the Minor Hill area. Because her maiden name was Cole, I'm assuming she was related to Lewis, perhaps even an aunt. I also noticed that in the 1880 census, there was a 17 year old boarder living with her and her husband by the name of Eunice Cole. She might also be a clue. The 1880 census indicates that Aunt Peggy's parents were born in SC, Lewis Houston's in Alabama, and Eunice's in TN. Here is some more vital information on these Coles I'm looking for: Lewis Houston Cole 1844 - 1908 b: 1844 d: 1908 .. +Elizabeth Louisa Balch 1859 - 1936 b: 1859 in Giles County, TN d: 1936 Margaret Cole 1829 - 1915 b: September 22, 1829 d: August 19, 1915 in Minor Hill, Giles County, TN .. +Thomas Lawrence 1834 - 1917 b: September 21, 1834 d: February 23, 1917 in Minor Hill, Giles County, TN Eunice Cole b. Abt. 1863 Any information on these Coles or any of my other lines much appreciated! I'm happy to share what I have. Jane Gilbert
