There are a number of WHITE families in Giles Co Tennessee. Our line is the James & Celia Curbo White family of Shoal Creek near Minor Hill, who first show up in the 1850 census. Many of the family, including James & Sealy White, are buried there in the White-Lawrence cemetery on Shoal Creek. Less than a mile down Shoal Creek is the grave of William Clark White, whose family first shows up there in the 1860 census, and who was murdered in a nasty robbery during the Civil War. There was some speculation that William C. & James M. White were related. After all, they lived so close and are buried so close. Not so, as we have proved just this week with DNA tests. No, we didn't dig up James and William. My wife's nephew Andy White of Fort Worth Texas descends in a direct male line from James M. White (1823-1888) of Giles Co Tenn. And we rounded up Ginny White Keefer's cousin Paul White of Nashville who represents the White family that William Clark White belongs to. They are not a match, not even close. Of course, it would have been nice as their family has their family tree traced to the generation before the Revolutionary War, including a Revolutionary War soldier who was father to William Clark White. But it does resolve the question beyond the shadow of a doubt. James M. & William Clark White of Shoal Creek are not related. There are a number of other WHITE families in Giles Co, and I would certainly be interested in getting them involved in our WHITE DNA project. It requires a male WHITE descendant. But even if you are not able to participate, you might find our DNA project of interest. Over time, we hope to map out some of the many WHITE family lines. It is a long term project with no instant results. But the above example of William C. & James White shows that DNA is a powerful tool when combined with other genealogical research.
