The map was compiled by D.G. Beers & Co. The TSLA website says "Between 1871 and 1907, the Beers Co. of Philadelphia did a series of maps of Tennessee counties showing landowners' names and the approximate location of their farms. These maps are available for Bedford, Davidson, Gibson, Giles, Hamilton, Haywood, Knox, Madison, Marshall, Maury, Montgomery, Rutherford, Shelby, Sumner, Williamson, and Wilson Counties." In reply to my email to TSLA (reference.tsla@state.tn.us), they responded: "The 1878 Beers map of Giles County is Map #1051 in our collection. It consists of six separate sections. The fee for reproduction of these sections is $5.00 per shot. The total fee would be $30.00. If you wish to order a copy, send a check or money order for that amount (payable to TSLA) and mail your request to Tennessee State Library and Archives, ATTN: Manuscripts Section, 403 Seventh Avenue North, Nashville, TN 37243-0312." Less than a week after sending my check, I received the six 18"x24" sheets (i.e., the overall map is 3'x 6'). The repro quality is just fair but you can clearly read landowner names overlaid on the map showing roads, etc. of that era. It took a little bit of work with a topo map to get my bearings but the map(s) is a great resource. I'll send a follow-up that describes each sheet by civil districts covered in case you want to purchase only the area where your ancestors lived.
