I tried to decipher the handwriting in this old deed. I had trouble with a kind of tree mentioned in the deed. I finally decided that it was a sugar tree or shugar tree. I finally found a website that mentioned that sugar trees were used by the early settlers of Giles. George Shields settled in the Elk Ridge area of Giles and Robertson Fork. Is there still a Big Brak or Brake Creek in Giles? Robert Stephenson mentioned in the deed was the son of Robert Stephenson and Jane Barron,born about 1797 in York Co,S.C. I have never found any trace of this Robert Stephenson after 1814. Geo. Shields } } Registered the 15th day of July 1814 Alexander Barron } 105 acres } to Alexander Barron Jr. This indenture made the fourth day of June one thousand eight hundred and fourteen,between Geo.Shields and Alexander Barron Sen. of the county of Giles and state of Tennessee of the one part and Alexander Barron Jr. of the same county and state of the other part,henceforth that the said Geo. Shields and Alexander Barron for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred dollars in hand for the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged and hath granted ,conveyed,and sold and by these present doth grant,bargain,and sell to the said Alexander Barron and his heirs forever one hundred and five acres of land lying and beginning in Giles County on a fork of Big Brak beginning at a white oak,running west thirty-four poles to the said fork of Big Brak. In all one hundred and fifty-five poles to a ash,thence south,ninety-fives poles to a sugar? tree,thence East one hundred and five poles to said creek in all one hundred and fifty-five poles to a white Oak,thence North ninety-nine poles to the beginning,to have and to hold the said tract of one hundred and five acres to the said Alexander Barron Jr.,his heirs,and assigns forever to his and their only proper use and behalf forever,and the said George and Alexander Barron to arrant and defend the said tract of one hundred and five acres from ourselves and our heirs,executors,and administrators or assigns forever to the said Alexander Barron Jr.,his heirs,and assigns forever.
