I an seeking information on Griffin Iredell Rutherford, born Giles County, TN 1875, married Ida Catherine (?), died about 1838 in Waxahatchie, Texas. I am trying to determine if the following Wm. G. Rutherford is the father if this Griffin Iredell Rutherford. Information from Wm G. Rutherford's pension application received from Tennessee State Archives: Application, dated Dev 17, 1903, states that he was a member of Company G, 3rd Regiment Ala Cav., C. S. A., paroled at Moulton, Ala at close of the war. "not wounded but taken with Pneumonia which settled in hip, back & shoulder, was sent to hospital where I remained over three months and then sent home where I was confined to bed for several years after the war, was taken with Pneumonia in 1864, at Huntsville Ala." Additional facts touching his disability and discharge from the army: "I was confined in the hospital at Huntsville, Ala, from Dec. 1863 to March 13, 1864, sick with rheumatism and pheunonia which settled in my throat and lungs leaving me permanently afflicted with a severe cough. I was a stout healthy man before these diseases were contracted in the service. In March 1864 the Surgeon Dr. Gill called in three other Doctors. They removed my clothing and after a thorough examination agreed that I would not be able for service for long time if ever. Then the hospital surgeon sent for my Captain, Josephus Shackleford, and explained to him that I was simply a burden on the service, that I would probably never be fit for service again, certainly not for a long time, and suggested that I be sent to my home at Moulton, Ala. I was sent home on sixty days furlough. At expiration of that time the post Surgeon at Moulton, Dr. Van Eaton, had the furlough renewed as I was still sick. I remained at home in this way, too sick for duty, till the close fo the war when I was paroled at Moulton. Have never been a well man since. Most of the material witnesses to these statements are dead or their places of residence unknown to me." Signed: W. G.
