I just can't imagine what it was like to be a slave, being torn away from your family and sold like a horse - "sound, sensible and a slave for life.". I agree that probably a lot of people treated their slaves well, but there were a lot that did not. No one has the right to enslave another person. My husband's family did free their slaves before making the trip to Macon County because the slaves had to travel by land with the horses, cattle, etc. The family was afraid that they would encounter problems along the way if they were not free.
