I probably can put you in touch with a descendant from one of the Hastings slaves. Her views - well, her whole family has suffered greatly because their progenitor, a slave named Daniel Hastings was drug out of his owner's property by Yankee soldiers and forced to serve them as a cook. A year or so later when a battle in Tennessee was not going their way, the Federal soldiers lined up all the blacks who were serving in their unit, positioning them in the front lines of the on-coming Confederate soldiers. Daniel was killed leaving a widow and several children. One of those children continued to work for the Hastings family for many years after the war. This former slave descendant lives in and around Chicago. She has a webpage. I've not corresponded with her in three or four years, but I did help her track down some of her kinfolk. Ruth
