He was a butcher by trade, but soon became a tavern owner and one of Salisbury's leading citizens. There is an excellent article telling his story in the History and Heritage of St. John's Lutheran Church in Salisbury. His wife, Christina , was born in Frederick Co VA on 17 May, 1737. Her parents were Johannes and Barbara Schnepp, who came from Germany on the Samuel in 1733. Her father was born in Duntzenheim 1 Dec 1695. His parents were Lorentz Schnepp and Catherina Haber, who were married at Alteckendorff on 13 Sept 1689 and had 11 children baptized in 8 different villages between 1691 and 1714. Lorentz's father was Hans Schnepp and both were shepherds in Alsace. The Lawrence Snapp who settled in Rowan Co NC was probably Christina's uncle born at Wickershel 16 Aug 1711, who came to America with her parents. There is also a large Snapp family in Frederick Co VA, all descended from Johannes. John Lewis Beard had 9 children; 1. Lewis born 13 Aug 1755, married Susan Dunn, dau of John on 27 Jan 1785 and died 11 Dec 1811 2. Valentine married Obedience Giles 3. John Sr. married Mary Faust and died in Salisbury 26 June 1845 4. Margaret married George Hoover 5. Mary married Jacob Utzman 6. Michael married Margaret Zenelly 1 Jan 1787 and died 4 April 1841 7. Christina born 9 Nov 1769, married Rev. Carl Storch on 14 Jan 1790 8. Catharina 9 Saloma John Beard's wife, Mary Faust , was the dau of Peter Faust and Eleanor Dunn. John and Mary had 11 children; 1. Eleanor 2. Elizabeth 3. Julia 4. Smith in York Co SC ca 1848 10. Marcus 11. Mary E. born ca 1815 who never married and died 25 Aug 1842 in Salisbury. Adrian Beard was a carpenter and cabinet maker, had three children by his 1st marriage; 1. John W. born 1828 York Co SC, died 29 Oct 1873 in TX 2. William F. born 1844, died in Cleborne, TX in 1904 3. Julia b 1848, md J.W. Parker 19 May 1870. Adrian and his 2nd wife had 6 more children; 1. Martha Ann b 1849 md Jerome L. Walter A. b 29 Oct 1863, died 11 Jan 1886 York Co SC. **** Another submitter in same book; The Rev Quincy Beard born Dec 7, 1929 in Iredell Co NC is the great grandson of Thomas Melvin Beard of Cornelius, NC, who was a teacher and md 1st Miss Eagle. Their son Washington Henry Clay Beard md Amanda Margaret Grant, spend his adult life in Statesville, NC and were the parents of Robert Q. Beard's father, Robert Ezekiel Beard. The senior Robert Beard was married to Nola Jane Hoover, dau of Quincy Absalom Hoover and Mary Augusta Clodelter of Iredell Co NC. It is thought this Beard family originated in Scotland because this family were Presbyterians as Scots tended to be. [??? my addition] Andrew Huber born in Baden, Germany, came to the New World in 1738, settling in PA and then on the Maryland frontier.. Andrew married Margaret Faust [Pfautz] of PA and later moved to NC. A son, John, and several of John's brothers migrated west and settled in Ohio. At that time, John's son, Jesse, was eleven years old. Some years later Jesse married Rebecca Yount and their son, Eli, married Mary Davis. Eli and Mary's son, Jesse II, was the father of Herbert Clark Hoover. John's son, Jonas, stayed in NC, around Guilford Co and married Rachel Briles. Jonas had a son named John and John's son was Cowan Hoover who was the father of Quincy Absalom, the grandfather of Robert Quincy Beard, making Robert and President Herbert Hoover fourth cousins once removed. The NC Hoovers who descended from Jonas migrated to Iredell Co and were devout Lutherans. [ I got lost with this connection from Jesse Beard to the Hoover through the male line- hope it is clearer to the readers-Ginny] This story goes on and connects the Stewarts of Iredell Co NC to the Beard's. [ John Stewart of Fourth Creek, born in Augusta Co VA ca 1753] My William White, RW soldier, who died in May 1833 Lincoln Co TN and whose descendants lived in Giles Co TN, purchased land from John Lewis Beard in old Rowan Co NC . William later came to Lincoln Co TN in time to appear in 1820 LCT census with many of his NC neighbors. I believe Beards came ca same time. *** Pioneers of Old Frederick Co VA by Cecil O'Dell, begins on page 365 in a discussion of the Snapp family. [Let me know if anyone needs more info on this family.] page 366 Lawrence Snapp [brother of John b 1695] apparently moved to Rowan Co NC in the late 1740's or early 1750's. About the time John's daughter, Christina Snapp, married John Lewis Beard [ see Rumple, Rev. Jethro, A History of Rowan Co NC, Gen. Publ. Com. Baltimore, MD, 1990, page 67]. Lawrence Snapp, baptized 16 Aug 1711, was deceased by Feb 1771 when his will dated 27 Nov 1768 was proved in Rowan Co NC Court. His will listed children; Christina Beard, Catherine Rial, Margaret Ritleman, Barbara Baninor, Elizabeth and Lawrence.[Rowan Co NC Will Book A, page 154] In this book are several property sales to the Beard family. James Beard, on Shenandoah River mostly. I have not found any marriage connections between my White family and the Beard family or Snapp family. Ginny K
