Hello, I am helping my son trace his history. Does anyone know of or have a connection to one "Josiah E Maddox", married to Mary Jordan (b1804) in Va. ? They were parents of Samuel J Maddox (b.1824) Giles Co. Tn. We believe Josiah was a surveyor in Giles Co. and died in 1829. Thanks for readingl MHM

Researchers of TN Land Grants from NC: I just received an inquiry about located NC Land Grants in a specific county in TN. As an example, they asked about: Franklin Co TN. They have to find the original county on the internet.[ Like Franklin Co TN in this case] I typed in Franklin Co TN and found it was formed from Bedford Co., Dec 3, 1807. Bedford Co TN was established same day from Rutherford Co TN. Rutherford Co was part of Davidson Co. Davidson Co TN was formed in 1783 from Washington Co TN. She has to look in the NC to TN Land Grants book page for the different dates that are listed for Washington Co Land Grants and see if her ancestor is listed. Then contact the Main Office of Secretary of State in TN [ not a local Sec. of State branch] They may be on the internet. Inquiry will need; 1. number in the book 2. date and county in the book 3. name of ancestor from the book. I do not know how much they cost. Perhaps on line or a phone call will be very helpful. If someone obtains this info , Please post it for others to know. Thank you. Ginny K ginnykeefer@cox.net

I have wondered if the John Armstrong below might have been the John Armstrong they called the "Old Entry" Taker, who I believe had a brother named Martin Armstrong. This is the will of John Stephenson who settled on Bullocks Creek in York Co,S.C. in 1764. I did find a John Armstrong with the initials D.S. who was involved with surveying land near Bullocks Creek in August of 1775. The Margaret Stephenson mentioned in the will married David Dickey. His brother was Robert Dickey and Margaret Peggie Hillhouse who were the parents of John Dickey Sr. an early settler of Giles Co,TN. The Robert Stephenson mentioned in the will would marry Jane Barron in York Co,S.C. in 1787. Some of her brothers appear on the 1820 census of Giles Co,TN. I tried to decipher the handwriting in this old deed. I had trouble with a kind of tree mentioned in the deed. I finally decided that it was a sugar tree or shugar tree. I finally found a website that mentioned that sugar trees were used by the early settlers of Giles. George Shields settled in the Elk Ridge area of Giles and Robertson Fork. Is there still a Big Brak or Brake Creek in Giles? Robert Stephenson mentioned in the deed was the son of Robert Stephenson and Jane Barron, born about 1797 in York Co,S.C. This is the third time and last time I have posted this . Write down the number of the Land Grant, the date, the county and the name you are researching for these grants. Check on line to see if TN Mail Secretary of State office is listed. If so, ask do they have the NC Land Grants into TN that you can order from? Ask how much and what E Mail can to send your question about obtaining a Land Grants or Mailing Address. Many of these grants were never lived on. Some of the soldiers sold them as soon as they could, Not all did that. Do not let the county name deter you locating a number. The counties have changed several times since early NC gave part of NC to TN. That is all I can help you with. We owe Family Tracker and Melissa Hogan a great big pat on their backs for straightening out my mess. They did a great job. Ginny ginnykeefer@cox.net

I have mentioned several times that those who want a copy of a NC Land Grant in TN should contact the TN Secretary of State office [ they are probably on line?]. Give them the number, date, county and name of the one you are interested in. Ask them first to be sure they have the original copies. Ask HOW MUCH a copy will cost you. {NOT YOUR LOCAL SECRETARY OF STATE- MUST BE TN MAIN OFFICE} If they insist they do not have the original's contact the TN State Archives and tell them what you need. Happy Hunting. Ginny K ginnykeefer@cox.net
For those who still want a copy of the NC Land Grants in TN, note that a member of our site has posted TWICE that he will send you a copy he has put together. I am unable to do the difficult computer changes. Send your request for a copy of NC Land Grants in TN with YOUR OWN E MAIL included in the request so the copy can be sent directly to you. They are too large to go through our genealogy site. SEND YOUR REQUEST WITH YOUR OWN E MAIL TO: familytracker@comcast.net I appreciate family tracker very much for his kindness. I was able to download and save a copy of each part. That was in deed a lot of work and I for one appreciate all your hard work and efforts to get the information to everyone. It is no big deal to join MSN and then save them on your own computers. I have done all I can and it is not working. There is no cost to become a member. It is like TNGiles and TNLinc to join. That is the best I can suggest.
