One cousin said Mary Polly McKinney's husband's name was Elihu or Jahue Woods, but I have not been able to substantiate this. In 1830 Mary Polly McKinney would have been 22, married to a Wood/Woods with one son Joseph age 1. Unless there was a mistake on the census or the Woods family was living in a different county, this only left: p.171 Woods Johnathan 100001-00001 (Likely.) p.172 Woods Johnathan 10001-00001 (Likely.) p.209 Woods Jno. 10001-11001 (If the two daughters died) She was in the 1840 census next door to Reuben McKinney: 1840 Giles Co TN - M704 Roll 523 Book 1 p.95 #12 MCKINNEY Reuben 00021001 - 00010001 no slaves, 6 total, 4 agriculture #13 WOODS Mary 021 - 100001 no slaves, 5 total, 1 agriculture I had assumed that she might have been his daughter, but she may have been Reuben's niece instead. Data for Mary Mckinney Woods in the 1880 Barry Co MO census indicates that her father was born in VA and mother in NC, so 1850 Giles Co TN data for Reuben and his wife Nancy McKinney does fit: 1850 Giles Co TN, District 3 - M432 Roll 879 Book 1 p.324b 106-106 MCKINNEY Robert 27 TN Farmer & wife 107-107 MCKINNEY Reubin 67 VA Farmer 2300 & Jane 65 NC Mary Woods and her children were in District 2. I think Joseph Woods was probably listed twice in this census, as a son for Mary Woods and overseer for Lucy Polly. We need to find probate records for Reuben McKinney who died about Sep 1858 in Milam Co, TX and Reuben's wife Nancy who died there in 1866 to see if Mary Woods was an heir. If Reuben McKinney married Nancy Jane Springer Lyles in 1811 Roane Co, TN, then Nancy should not be mother of Mary Polly McKinney b.1808 TN; it was Nancy's second marriage and her maiden name was Springer. About 2 years ago I stopped by the Giles County Court House, but had no real luck sorting out the Woods or McKinney lines. I will continue by email. Thanks Anna & Joe for this article. I am sharing with the genealogy group at our next meeting; everyone will get a copy as this subject has been discussed many times. So confusing! I noticed a William Cox,J.M.Cox and J. Cox who served with the Ninth Alabama Infantry, which was called the "Limestone Grays",during the Civil War.They "Limestone Grays" were recruited out of Limestone County,Alabama. The Nixons I have concentrated on in Limestone County,Alabama go back to Elliott H. Nixon and his wife Jane Stephenson. Limestone County, Alabama - Orphans Court Minutes 1824-1830 Page 280 - 25 August 1825 - This day Elizabeth STEPHENSON, Aministratrix of the Estate of Robert STEPHENSON, deceased, appeared in Court by attorney and filed a petition praying a Sale of the real estate of said deceased in order that a fair and equitable division may be had and that citations may _____ to the heirs of the deceased in said petition _____to show cause, if any they can, why the prayer of satisfaction should not be granted. It is therefore ordered that William WHEAT and Esther WHEAT, his wife, Whitley STEPHENSON, Samuel WHEAT and Scintha WHEAT, his wife, Elliott H. NIXON and Jane NIXON, his wife, Logan STEPHENSON and Mary STEPHENSON, his wife, Thomas N. MING, and Susannah MING, his wife, Greenup STEPHENSON, Freedom STEPHENSON, William SMITH and Sarah SMITH, his wife. Andrew STEPHENSON and James STEPHENSON be cited to be and appear before the Judge of this Courthouse in the town of Athens, on the 2nd Monday in October next to answer said petition and that Robert Austin, Jr. be appointed Guardian of Andrew and James STEPHENSON, Infants under twenty years to answer and defend against Said Petition, and it appearing to the Court that Scinthia WHEAT, Susannah MING, Greenup STEPHENSON and Freedom STEPHENSON are not residents of this State, it is ordered that a copy of this order be published in some newspaper printed in this State for four weeks succeeding. This Robert Stephenson often went by the name surname of "Stinson" which is the Scottish vernacular for "Stephenson." Limestone County,Alabama: Beneficiaries of John Beckham's will, among others, are > Hugh and Winny Tisdale, Situah Jane Beckham, William A > Beckham, through his guardian, Andrew Stinson, Liberty > Nixon and Wife, Margaret Nixon. Limestone County,Alabama marriage record: >Stinson, Andrew-Beckham, Catherine 08 Jul 1841 by A. B. Gilbert My interest in Robert Stephenson of Limestone Co,Alabama is that my Samuel Stephenson, who shows up on the 1820 census of Giles Co,TN, went to Limestone County,Alabama by 1822,where his son George Alexander Stephenson was born. George Alexander Stephenson married Elizabeth Sarah Perry in Giles Co,TN in 1849. George Alexander Stephenson and his wife Elizabeth Sarah Perry are buried in the small Antioch Cemetery in Biardstown,TX ,Lamar County,TX. Descendents of Robert Stephenson are also buried in the Antioch Cemetery,Biardstown. Children of Mary Sue Stephenson Hudson, daughter of George Alexander Stephenson, claimed my Stephensons were cousins to Robert Stephenson. Robert Stephenson married Elizabeth Whitley in Lincoln County,KY in 1793.Elizabeth Whitley was the daughter of the famous William Whitley, one of the first pioneers in Kentucky, and as a result had to fight Indians. William Whitley was killed at the Battle of the Thames during the War of 1812. He was passed the age of sixty at the time of his death. The home of William Whitley was made into a state park in Kentucky.

But there are family tales. Evidently William Harrison Zinn went to get his daughter Columbia Jane back from Miller Woods. He found out that she was pregnant and took her back to Miller. My list of children matches yours fairly well, but I do have some info on Joseph: 1)Joseph Allen Woods b.Oct 1862 d.aft.1930 maybe Henderson Co, TX. m. 1893 to Sarah Bell ???? b.Sep 1872 TX. 5 children 2)Miller Franklin Woods b.8 Oct 1866 d.26 Dec 1939 Belfalls, TX. m.1st 31 Oct 1888 Sebastian Co, AR to Columbia Jane Zinn. They had 4 children. m.2nd abt.1908 to Unknown. Had one daughter. m.3rd abt 1910 to Lenora Alice or Nora L. Thompson. They had 3 children. 3)John N. or Jay Hugh Woods b.Dec 1868 d.5 Dec 1968 Harris Co., TX m. 30 Apr 1909 Madison Co, TX to Myrtle Bessie Miller. They had 9 children. 4)William Wiley or Wiley M. They had a daughter and a son. 5)Neil Woods b.1873 No other info. 6)Mary J. Woods b.1875. Thank you for leting me know where she married. I will have to hunt her in the records. 7)Parasy Woods (male)b.1877 Must be your Pat (Pardy). 8)B. Dee or Bee D. Woods b.30 Nov 1878 probably Brazos Co., TX. m.28 Apr 1912 Madison Co, TX to Jessie A. Williamson. They had a daughter and a son. 9)Jessy Woods. No further information. Hopefully, this is accurate. I did not know about Ruth Woods b.1855 MO by Joseph's first marriage. I knew that Joseph and Edith Sanford Lollar Woods had both been previously married from the 1910 census. There was a tale that the Woods line was was Native American. Direct male Woods descendants might be able to connect to other Woods lines with the Y-DNA tests. Mary Polly McKinney was probably white. The McKinney's were listed as intruder's in early "Mississippi Territorial" papers and were removed by Col. Meigs, but they returned. Mary Polly McKinney's husband was reported by one cousin to possibly be an Elihu or Jahue Woods who would have been the Native American. Lydia Jane Woods was the last child, her father must have disappeared about 1835 which was about the time of Indian Removal. I don't know if mitochondrial DNA tests would help at all for connecting to earlier roots. Here is a transcription of Lydia Jane Woods Zinn's obit: [Cassville Republican - Thursday, Sept. 4, 1930 p.1] An Aged Mother Passes. Lydia J. Woods, was born in Giles County, Tennessee, February 27, 1836, died at her home near Leann on August 28, 1930, at the age of 94 years, 6 months, and one day. Mrs. Zinn had been enjoying good health until about two years ago when her health began to decline. She was confined to her bed only about two weeks before her passing. She came to this county with her mother and three brothers when she was only 14 years of age. She was married to William Harrison Zinn on January 1, 1854 (should be 1857) and to this union were born 12 children, 5 sons and 7 daughters; seven have preceded her, two boys and five girls. The husband preceded her in death on June 29, 1888. The children surviving are T. C. Zinn of Leann, W. M. Zinn of Rocky Comfort, James H. Zinn of Portland, Oregon, Mary Stubblefield of Cassville, and Nevada Wiley of Clayton, New Mexico. She united with the Church of Christ some 50 years ago and has lived a consecrated Christian life. Funeral services were held at Leann on Friday, August 29, conducted by Rev. Geo. Cotrell in the presence of a host of friends and internment made in the Leann cemetery by the side of her husband to await the resurrection day. I have further info. Glad we made contact. I'm off to work. Tom Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Limestone Co AL Nebo Church Cemetery. location; SE quarter, Sect. 1, T4S, R5W, across the road from Nebo Church Jones Crossroads. Sally Nixon 1872-1939 Jim Nixon 1870-1946 I will check more later in Limestone Co records. It appears he was raised by James Liberty Independence Nixon, Feb. 7, 1824- Dec 30, 1903, who received a special discharge from the war in 1862. He returned home to Popular Creek in Limestone Co. He was son of Frank Nixon. Liberty was very active in politics and had some money, it appears. I will check closer later. Have some errands to run. Ginny ginnykeefer@cox.net
