    1. [TNGILES] Rube Watkins murdered by Robert Hargrove
    2. Ruth Hasten Walsh
    3. Robert Hargrove is the s/o Robert L. and Lucinda (Lucy) Hargrove. He married Sarah Elizabeth Thompson. Lucy Hargrove is d/o Jesse Austin Hargrove. Is there anyone on this mailing list who knows about the murder described in the news article below? What happened to Robert Hargrove? Rube Watkins owned a saw mill at I-65. When crossing I-65 toward Pulaski his land is on the left. Ruby Richard (Rube) Watkins s/o Columbus Watkins and Annie Lou Webster. Alabama Courier, Dec 12, 1946, p.1 RUBE WATKINS-KILLED NEAR ARDMORE Rube Watkins, 62, was killed Sunday morning about sunrise from a shotgun blast, allegedly fired by Robert Hargrove, about 33, who was placed under arrest for the killing by Giles County, Tennessee, authorities. The shooting took place between Ardmore and Elkton, near the highway. It is said that there had been ill feeling between the two for some time. Details obtainable here were vague, but indications were that the shot which killed Watkins was fired from some distance, with perhaps a single pellet being responsible for his death. Reports were that Hargrove worked on a tract of timberland owned by Watkins. Ruth Hasten Walsh

These folks (with the possible exception of the Foxes) were all descendants of William (M.?) THOMPSON who died "in Tennessee or Alabama" 25 Dec 1840. A distant cousin says that William "bounced back & forth" between Lauderdale Co., AL and Giles/Lawrence Cos., TN, so I thought this might be his final resting place since 2 of his grandsons, Levi & J.W. (Josiah Wesley) are. I am a descendant of William & Margaret JACK(S)' youngest daughter, Nancy, who married Hardy MATTHEWS in 1827 in Lauderdale Co. I can't find who Hardy's or Margaret's parents were. Gary Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [TNGILES] Toone, Clem, Matlock, Hastings, Smith, Dunnavant, Holland and Hardiman desc. and/or rodeo fans
    2. Ruth Hasten Walsh
    3. If you are researching the Giles Co.,TN and Limestone Co., AL surnames above you might be interested in following the professional rodeo career of twin brothers, Wayne Folmer and John Folmer. For a photo and partial bio of Wayne you can go http://www.army.mil/rodeo/cowboys.html. On that webpage search for Wayne Folmer (there's a photo). Wayne and John are competing again this year and I'm told are, "doing pretty good" in the standings. Wayne Folmer is the grandson of Mahlon Clem and the g-grandson of Joseph Edgar Clem and Mary Lou Toone. His gg-grandparents are Charles Pettus Clem and Minerva G. Matlock and Thomas Warren Toone and Mary Ann Smith. Wayne's ggg-grandparents were Edward Smith and Sarah Elizabeth "Bet' Hastings (aka Hasten), George Washington Toone and Tenertha Tabitha Holland, Andrew J. Matlock and wife Christina and Thomas David Clem and India S. Holland. Some of Wayne's gggg-grandparents are Ezekiel Hastings and Elizabeth Dunnavant, Samuel Smith and unknown wife who probably was Culprina Hardiman. Ruth Hasten Walsh

    3. Several years ago I corresponded with Earline Thompson Lanchaster and have a book she did on her Thompson family. Levi Thompson buried in the Thompson cemetery near Minor Hill was the son of Samuel Jack Thompson and Harriett Ferrell Earline said she had no proof but thought Samuel Jack Thompson's parents were William M. Thompson and Margaret Jack. Levi's father died between 1842-1843 and his Mother remarried John Scott, who lived across the road. In 1850 Lauderdale Co., AL Levi is living with his Mother and shows born in Alabama. When he grew up he came to Giles County where his Mother's people were [Ferrell] Levi married Elizabeth Norwood, if you are from this line I have Norwood material.
