    1. [TNGILES] Robert Stephenson and Katherine Shields
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: tommy276 Surnames: Stephenson,Shields,Barron,Perkins Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.tennessee.counties.giles/1993/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am searching for a Robert Stephenson b. 1793 in York Co,S.C., who is said to have married a Katherine Shields. A fellow Stephenson researcher claimed she had a Robert Stephenson b. 1793 who married a Katherine Shields. Robert Stephenson was in Giles Co,TN in 1814. His brother Samuel Stephenson married Mary Shields. Samuel Stephenson went to Limestone Co,Alabama by 1822 and I think Robert Stephenson followed them to Alabama. Robert Stephenson and his wife are said to have had a son William Jackson Stephenson b. Alabama. This William Jackson Stephenson went to McLean Co,IL. and was on the 1895 Census of Brookyln Township in Poweshiek Co,Iowa. The Shields Genforum has an Alexander Shields b.South Carolina and a Leander Shields b. TN living in the same places as this William Jackson Stephenson in IL. I find this interesting since Alexander and Leander are names found among the Shields in Giles Co,TN. I know that George Shields and Alexander Barron were living in Pendleton Co,! SC in 1800. Robert Stephenson was a witness to a land transaction between George Shields,Alexander Barron Sr,and Alexander Barron Jr. in 1814. I think it is quite possible that Robert Stephenson did marry one of the Shields'girls. On the 1895 census of Brooklyn,Township,Poweshiek Co,IA is William Stephenson, age 68,b.Ala. His wife Polly Perkins is also listed. They married in Illinois in 1850 and a William J. Stephenson purchased land in McLean Co,IL.in 1851. Don't know how sourced my info is--it's old research from another relative. The Montgomery's were near the Davidsons, around Iredell and Mecklenburg Counties in NC. Later they all seemed to have moved together to Giles County, TN. I have several holes in mine. I would love to have copies of those gravestones for my own research, also. Mary Polly is one of my direct ancestors as well. Mary Polly and Hugh's daugher, Ann married Leander Shields, daughter Harriet married Alphaeus Henderson, my gggrandfather. Harriet was born in Giles county in 1824 and I have always wanted to know her middle name (her initial is N.). Lisa Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: MattLisaH Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.tennessee.counties.giles/1961.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: This is the information I have on Samuel Montgomery. His birth year is 1732 in Lancaster County, PA. He died c. 1808 in Giles County, TN. His wife was Elizabeth McElroy Htey had 5 children: Elisabeth, Mary Polly, Williami, Jane, and John. These are the notes I have on Samuel: transferred to 4th Pennsylvania Jan. 17, 1781 wounded July 6, 1781 at Battle at Green Springs. transferred to 3rd Pennsylvania on Jan. 1, 1783, serving until June 1783. All war and bounty records in National Archives were detroyed by fire in War Office in 1800 except warrant #1425 for 300 acres of land issued July 16, 1789 for services rendered. After close of war moved with wife and 5 children to Bedford County, Pennsylvania, owning a home there in 1784. Here Elizabeth died and Samuel married Mary in Carlisle, Penn. Later moved to Mecklenburg County, NC. Late 1780's moved all families (including daughters and their husbands) to Elbert Co., Georgia, then several years later to Tennessee, south of Nashville, settling on land in area which became Giles Co. and Maury Co., TN. Early 1808, they, with children and grandchildren's families, crossed over ridge that runs along the northeast border of Giles Co., passing through a gap which for many years afterwards was known as the Montgomery Gap, now known as the Dodson Gap. Leander and Ann King settled just south of the gap. Capt. Samuel and his son John settled further south on Robertson Fork of Richland Creek. James Shields and Hugh King settled on Fountain Creek at extreme southern edge of Maury Co., (flows into Duck River), and neighbors were George and Rosannah Falls Davidson. I hope this is of help to you. Hoorah! :) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [TNGILES] LEWTER or LUTER surname
    2. Susan Rosine
    3. Hello Everyone, Although the message below concerns a reunion being held in North Carolina this year, I know there are lots of Lewters living in Alabama and Tennessee whose roots are in North Carolina, and they may want to attend this event. Last year's was held in Huntsville, Alabama and was very successful. If you know a Lewter or Luter (who is not interested in genealogy and/or is not a member of this List), would you also please pass this along to them? THANKS, Susan YOU ARE INVITED to the 2nd Annual National LEWTER and LUTER Family Gathering! The 2nd Annual National LEWTER-LUTER Family Gathering will be held Saturday, April 19th at Lake Crabtree County Park, just outside Raleigh, North Carolina from 11 am till the last person leaves, or sunset, whichever comes first. Lake Crabtree County Park is located just off Interstate 40, making it easy to get to from the airport, Raleigh-Durham, or surrounding areas. Our reserved shelter is close to restroom facilities, the children’s play area, and lake. There is one electrical outlet available for our use. The event is free. Please bring a picnic lunch for yourself. If you are related to any Lewter or Luter, please join us for our 2nd annual event. We rotate the location every year, so it may not come back to North Carolina for awhile. · Meet distant cousins for the first time! · Meet with genealogists who have been researching the Lewter-Luter family tree for years. They can help you with your research, and are also interested in learning about your branch of our great Lewter-Luter family! · Learn interesting facts about our early Lewter/Luter ancestors. For example, several of them served in the Revolutionary War. Learn more about your Lewter/Luter roots! · You do not have to carry the name of Lewter or Luter to attend. You just need to have an ancestor (even if it’s your mom or dad!) who is/was a Lewter/Luter! Contact John Burns at email woodsstalker@ctc.net or 704-438-4501 with questions.

Ireland. I believe this may be the Roger P. Neal of the 1860 census in Maysville, Mason Co.,KY. because at that census the occupation was also stone mason & the age correlates. 1850 census this Roger P. O'Neal was in Jennings Co.,IN with children: Patrick 19 b. Ireland, Johanna 15 b. Ireland, Norah 13 b. Ireland. In the fall of 1850 in Jennings Co.IN Roger P. O'Neal m. Mary Lewis Simmons, a widow with youngest children being Sophronia & Henry Simmons. She is incorrectly listed with the surname of Timmons on the 1850 census. I would like to know if Patrick O'Neil of the 1870 census was the same man of the other 2 mentioned census. Would like to know where & when he died, but mainly my interest is in his Simmons wife. 3. Don't know if this church existed in Giles County but accoring to the 1986 Cemetery Records Book for Giles County there is a listing for Bethesda Cemetery as states as location: Highway 31 S, left at Ephesus Church into Hardy Road, cemetery on right, across from church. I did not find a listing for a John Vining buried there but if no stone there is probably no listing. Try Limestone County AL near Ardmore which is almost on the AL/TN State Line. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Cynthia" <cydean@cox.net> To: <TNGILES@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, April 01, 2008 2:29 PM Subject: [TNGILES] BETHESDA METHODIST CHURCH > Dear List; > > I am researching my ancestor John Vining of Lincoln Co., TN. 2. Ruth Hasten Walsh
    3. Steve, you are welcome. You are exactly the person I thought might be interested in this information. Sorting the LCA and GCT Holt's has sometimes proven to be a great challenge. Then tracking down the LCA Holt's who moved to Texas has proven to be an even greater challenge. I found Mattie in the 1920 Lamar Co., TX census living with her son W.H. Holt, but didn't find her son Claud P. Holt nor the dau Rue Ethel. If you take a good look at the 1900 census for family of George P. one would never decipher her given name to be either Rue Ethel or Ethel Rue Holt. The 1910 Ellis Co., TX census records under Mattie D. Holt isn't much clearer. George had siblings and cousins who moved to Lamar County so I'm guessing that's why Mattie moved the family to Lamar County. I'm guessing that Claude had asthma or some other lung problem and that's why the family moved to West Texas. I certainly wouldn't have looked for them there. Some of the extended Holt cousins would up in the Texas panhandle but not in the Abilene area so I certainly wouldn't have thought to look for them there. If you haven't already looked for some Stephenson descendants there I'd suggest you do so. I first found the obit for son William H. Holt. It was on the same page as a news item about a Browning-Landers (from Calhoun Co., AL) descendant I was tracking. I always check out Holt obits, just to see if its anyone that might be in my database and whalla! there was information on this long lost family of George P. Holt. Now, If only I could find the cemetery record for Geo. P. Holt. 3. I found members of this family while researching families in some of my other lines. Since it took me more than ten years to find out what happened to most members of this Holt family line I thought I'd share this infor with other Holt-Stephenson family researchers. It should be noted that there are other, unrelated, Holt families found in Abilene, Taylor Co., Texas records. George P. Holt named in newspaper articles below was son of William N. Holt and Martha Cunningham of Limestone Co., AL. He was grandson of Henry Holt and Dorothy Lewter both of whom died in Limestone Co., AL. Claud P. Holt named in records below died in Abilene, Taylor Co., TX on 2-23-1925. When Claude died, four lots were purchased in name of Mrs. Claude P. Holt. Claude was unmarried when he died so it is believed by cemetery personnel that the lots were actually purchased by Claude's mother, Mrs. Mattie Dorcas Stephenson Holt.
