    2. James H. Davis
    3. Does anyone have a releatively recent Minor Hill vicinity phone book they'd be willing to send me? I'd be willing to reimburse for the postage. Also, is there a particular newspaper which covers the Minor Hill area? If so, can someone supply the address? Finally, a few weeks ago a kind lady from Atlanta who subscribes to this list sent me copies of some old Giles Co. maps. I need to pay her $6.00 for the copies & postage, but have misplaced both the letter she sent and the envelope the maps were mailed in. Hence, I need her name and address if anyone can help. Thanks. Jim Davis

    1. [TNGILES-L] Caves in Giles Co.
    2. Henry P Mayo
    3. Rob, Your note about caves is very interesting to me. Especially since yesterday, when I was told by a cousin that our ancestors supposedly scratched their names into a cave in Giles county and I told him I would see if I could find any TN cave explorers on internet. He said that the story is passed down in our LEE family that all the oldtimers in the family had scratched their names into a cave wall on the old LEE home place in Giles county. The first LEE in our line, John, came to Giles county about 1812 and supposedly had an estate named 'Vine Bower'. My cousin has done some deed research and thinks he knows where the land is and says that the people around there say that there are two caves there. Can you help me find any new or old cave explorers in the Giles county area? Thanks, Henry P Mayo (HPMayo@Juno.com, HPMayo@Prodigy.net for attachments) College Station, TX > >Good afternoon list on this happy raining July 3rd. 2. Linda James Ali
    3. Hi, I'm looking for info on the family of a James HIGGINS who died in the late 1850's, his widow Mary (and a previous wife who was Mary's sister) who died a few years later. The estate was considerable, apparently, and apparently was in and out of Giles courts for years. The family included, as near as I can tell, Robert S. HIGGINS, David M. HIGGINS, Andre J. HIGGINS, Benjamin HIGGINS, Samuel A., Henry C. HIGGINS, Angeline HIGGINS, Betsey SMITH, Mary Jane JONES or JAMES, Sarah JONES, Martha M. GARRISON, Josephine A. HIGGINS, Margaret YOUNG, Eliza JONES, Joanna WHITE and James B. HIGGINS, among many others. Welcome any info or corrections, especially anything about Mary Jane. Many family members migrated to northern Mississippi and to Texas.

    2. Rob Robbins
    3. Good afternoon list on this happy raining July 3rd. Myself and another, Lynn Roebuck at pretzlgirl@cafes.net are researching Civil War Saltpeter caves and miners in the middle Tennessee area. We certainly would appreciate information to add to our small data relative to any saltpeter caves and or known miners. Our data base which is just a bunch of references scattered all over in two houses is growing slowly but surely. Throughout genealogy references, should you run across any, we certainly would appreciate them especially from the Bedford, Marshall, Giles, Hickman and Maury County areas. Often when visiting these caves we locate names and dates smoked onto the walls and ceilings. Many times, this is the only references we have to go on. One would be amazed at what we find in caves. Check out my WEB Page below and be astounded. Thanking you in advance for your contributions and cooperation in advance. 1. [TNGILES-L] obit. of Beulah McLaurine Gordon
    2. Terri Black
    3. I just got a copy of "A Brief Sketch of the Settlement and Early History of Giles County Tennessee" by James McCallum. It is a used copy that I had purchased over the 'net. Glued to one of the back pages is an obituary. I thought I would transcribe it & throw it out to the list, in case someone is related to this woman ( & if you are related to her, let me know...there are notations thruout the book, I'll transcribe them for you, as well). "Mrs. Gordon Rites Slated For Sunday Services for Mrs. Beulah McLaurine Gordon, 91, of 4203 Leland Lane, will be at 2:30 pm Sunday at the West End Methodist Church. Dr. Roy C. Clark and Dr. A.J. Walton will officiate. Burial will be in Lynnwood Cemetery, Lynville. Finley Dorris and Charlton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Gordon died Friday in a local infirmary after an extended illness. A native of Lynville, she was a daughter of the late DeWitt Franklin and Ella Heflin McLaurine. She was a descendent of John Laird, a prominent landowner in Giles County who was Lynn Creek's first postmaster. Her grandfather, the Rev. Rufus T. Heflin, was a trustee of Trinity College, Durham, N.C., the predecessor of Duke University, and the first editior of the North Carolina Christian Advocate. Mrs. Gordon was educated in the Lynnville schools and attended Peabody College. She moved to Nashville in 1932 and was a receptionist for the YWCA for several years and was a reader in the state sessions. She was married in 1903 to Harvey Walker Gordon of Lynville. He died in 1904. Mrs. Gordon was a member of the West End Methodist Church and the Mary Helm Bible Class. Survivors include a son, Buford Gordon, Nashville; a nephew, Paul DeWitt McLaurine, Nashville; and a niece, Mrs. Walter H. Gay, Memphis. " There are some really good tid-bits in there. I hope it helps someone. Terri Hardiman-Black black@globe.com
