    1. [TNGILES-L] Richland Creek Association
    2. James H. Davis
    3. The Puncheon Camp Baptist Church of Christ met in a log building on the banks of Puncheon Branch, just southwest of Minor Hill, from 1844 until the late 1800's. I have partial minutes of the meetings of this Church and have begun transcribing them from notes given to me by Mrs. Sue Davis. These will be sent to Dave Worsham for posting at the Giles County web page. The Puncheon Church was, judging from these minutes, a member congregation of the Richland Creek Association. Does anyone know anything about this association, and if it's meetings minutes are still in existence? I infer from the Puncheon Camp minutes that Richland Minutes were printed b/c the folks at Puncheo were constantly sending money to the Richland Association for that purpose. Additionally, it is mentioned in the Puncheon minutes that the following churches were also members of the Richalnd association. Can anyone tell me where these churches are (or were): Lin Creek (Lynn Creek?) Big Creek Bethel Anderson Creek Second Creek Indian Creek Giles County

    3. Looking for information on the following surnames in Giles Co. about 1815: William LEE came from SC Catherine NUTT b. 1807 NC. Married William LEE's son, Strother LEE, b. 1805 SC. She would have traveled with her family as she was a young child. Catherine and Strother migrated to Tippah Co., MS 1842. LEE spouses listed in William LEE's will, 1829: Jacob EITELL, Britton SIMMONS, James R. HARWELL, and Thomas CHAPMAN. Elijah BENNETT b. 1800 Ga. Would have traveled with family. Sarah WELLS married Elijah BENNETT. Her father was John WELLS; mother Hannah LIVINGSTON. Thought that some LIVINGSTONS traveled with this family from Montgomery Co.,KY. John's father William WELLS mentioned as "Pioneer of Giles Co." Sarah and Elijah BENNETT migrated to AL 1834 and Tippah Co., MS 1840-1842. Any information on these families will be greatly appreciated :) Bettie Goldman egoldman@cris.com

    1. [TNGILES-L] Marriage Records
    2. James H. Davis
    3. Hi, Folks: I'm researching the McGill & Marbut lines in Giles County. My McGill's, along with several other families including (but not limited to) the SHELTONS and KENNEMERS, were members of the Puncheon Camp Baptist Church of Christ, on Puncheon Branch SE of Minor Hill, and very near the State line with Alabama. I have seen the "Baptist Church of Christ" described variously as another name for "Primitive Baptist" or "Hard Rock" Baptists. This having been said, did those folks not believe in getting a marriage license? The marriage records of Giles & surrounding counties are conspicuously short of licenses issued to individuals with surnames associated with the church I mentioned. For example, we infer via other data that my 3rd great-grandfather, Peterson McGill, was married four times: to Mahal Long about 1836; to Oda Marbut about 1849; to Sarah Sherwood (1870, recorded); and to Catherine Daly (1873, recorded). Does anyone have any ideas? Jim Davis

    2. In response to Myra Piland's query of Ashbury Academy. Where did they get married? This would be the first place I would check for the Academy in question. There were other chartered Female Academy's in Giles County. Sixteenth District towards Millville has a church named Ash Gap, also Goodspeed (http://www.rootsweb.com/~tngiles/goodspd/schools.htm), has a small listing of the chartered schools for male and female genders and where they were: Lynnville, Prospect, Elkton, Aspin Hill. Also lists the instructors or reverends that taught. Hope this helps. Kathy rdrwebster@aol.com

    3. Whenever I see the Lynville Cemetary listed, I hear several versions of where "IT" is really located. Can someone enlighten me on where the "old" one is, as I'm assuming that the large one that I saw was NOT it. The reason I say this is because I've been told numerous times that the town of Lynville, as we know and see it now, is not really the OLD Lynville where my relatives were and were buried in that cemetary by the same name? This may be a ridiculously silly question, but I am confused?????? HELP! Thanks, Barb in hot, humid, blazing temps Dallas! Quintila and William ARE buried in the Lynville cemetary, and after many visits, I've never been able to locate their gravesites. Anyone in the area who'd agree to help me? I'd be happy to pay for the trip there, the photographs, etc. ???????
