Hello all. I am researching the HUGHES family of Giles and Lawrence counties in TN and also Limestone Co., AL. I have been looking for the family of my gg grandfather R.F. Hughes who married Mary E. Liles in Lawrence Co., TN on November 02, 1869. We don't find them listed in the 1870 census of TN and by the 1880 census, Mary and their four children are listed in the household of Mary's parents, Thomas and Elizabeth Liles in Lawrence Co. What happened to R.F.? Did he die or did they divorce? Recently, I received some info from a subcriber to the Lawrence Co. list that my R.F. could possibly be Riley (Raleigh) F. Hughes, son of Aron and Elizabeth Bates Hughes. Aron's parents were William and Elidia Hughes, both of SC. It's my understanding that William Hughes died in Giles Co. in 1854. I found Aron's wife, Elizabeth, listed as the head of household in the 1870 Lawrence Co. census. Perhaps Aron was killed in the war. If there is anyone who could share info with me on this family, especially Riley, I would really appreciate it! Thanks! Tracy

Greetings! I am looking for information on Sarah Elizabeth Smithson who was born in Nashville according to a descendants death cert. What I need specifically is her marriage location. No records can be found in the Alabama records where she and James I McClure settled, so we assume she may have been married in one of the counties between there and Nashville. They were married Dec 29, 1853. I have information from WFT family finder index that Sarah appears on CD 235, Marriage Index, TN 1851-1900, but there is no one listed for doing lookups for that CD. If anyone has that CD, I would be grateful for any information given for her. Carol Aldinger
Mark Wilson, are you on the list??? If please contact me. Dave worsham@ave.net icq#4202467
Hi, folks: My 3rd great-grandfather, Peterson McGill, was born in TN 1816, d. Lauderdale Co., AL, Jan. 1888. He appears to have lived his entire life in the small area right where the four counties of Giles, Lawrence, Lauderdale and Limestone come together. He's in a census of each one of those counties at least once between 1840 and 1880. Peterson seems to have been married four times: The LDS database says first wife was Mahala Long, whom he appears to have married around 1835-36 (his first child, Robert, being born in 1836). His second wife, as supported by minutes of the Puncheon Camp Baptist Church, would seem to have been Oda Marbut (b. SC 1832). I can find wedding licenses for Peterson to his last two wives (Sarah Sherwood [Giles, 1870] and Catherine Daly [Lauderdale 1873]), BUT I CANNOT FIND ANY RECORD OF LICENSES BEING ISSUED FOR EITHER OF HIS FIRST TWO MARRIAGES IN ANY OF THE FOUR COUNTIES. Can someone PLEASE help? Jim Davis
John Smith Bailey was a resident of Giles Co. TN in 1820 where he is shown on the census. He was later in Lawrence Co. TN during the 1820's until he moved to Fayette Co. TN some time abt. 1829.He is shown there on the 1830 census. He was married to Mary Ann Bentley the daughter of Jeremiah Bentley. Their children Samuel S., John Harrison, Robert M., Elizabeth, Delaney, Elmyrah, Martha Ann Mahala, Jeremiah, and Absolom B. This family moved to Independence Co. AR, and then to LA. If anyone is working on any of these families, I would like to hear from them. Janet Bailey Bryant
