    1. [TNGILES-L] 1850 Giles County Census
    2. Dorris Chapel Church of Christ
    3. Hi, I am transcribing the 1850 Giles County for US GenWeb and also for Dave to put on the Giles County website. District 2 is now finished off to Dave for proofreading. District 3 will be finished by this weekend. I am needing someone to volunteer to proofread District 3 and 4 when they are finished being transcribed. I can scan a copy of the microfilm census that I am transcribing from. If you would like to volunteer to help in the transcribing or proofreading, please reply to my e-mail address. This is a valuable service that can be very helpful to those who do not have access to the census books that are published or to the microfilms of the original census. Thanks in advance for any help that anyone can give to us in this endeavor. 3. Hi, Does anyone know anything about Martha CROWDER, b 1844/46 Giles Co TN - dau of Bluford A. CROWDER. She may have married someone named TACKER or TACKETT, around 1859, when she would have been only around 15 years old. Would appreciate a marriage look-up on those names -- or any other tips. Thanks, Janis Walker Gilmore jgilmore@sccoast.net

    2. Jan Johnson
    3. Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Jan in Arizona " the words to the invitation for the very first Thanksgiving dinner 375 years ago. It still hold true 375 years later for the generations of the 1900s. TO ALL YE PILGRIMS Inasmuch as the great Father has given us this year an abundant harvest of Indian corn, wheat, beans, squashes, and garden vegetables, and has made the forests to abound with game and the sea with fish and clams, and inasmuch as He has protected us from the savages, has spared us from pestilence and disease , and has granted us freedom to worship God according to the dictates of our own conscience; now, I your magistrate, do proclaim that all ye Pilgrims , with your wives and little ones, do gather at the meeting house on the hill between the hours of 9 and 12 in the day time, on Thursday November the 29th of the year of our Lord one thousand six hundred and twenty three, and the third year since ye Pilgrims landed on the Pilgrim Rock, there to listen to your Pastor, and render thanksgiving to our almighty God for all His blessings. 3. I need a look up for a divorce record - probably in Giles or Lawrence Co TN. for sometime probably just before 1850. Jonathan McMasters from Rebecca Frances Yancey McMasters. Also a cemetery look up for the same Rebecca Frances Yancey McMasters - sources say she died in 1885. The following 1850 Giles County Census record: p. 391B, district 18, house 16: Alferd M. Yancey 61 M farmer $350 NC Lucy A. 57 F " Margaret C. 24 F TN Joel C. 4 M Mary F. 1 F Francis McMasters 26 F TN I believe that Mary F (may be S as she was known as Sallie) was the child of Rebecca Frances Yancey McMasters and possibly Joel C was the son - does anyone connect or help me with this????!!! This is sort of a "black sheep" kind of story. Family here in Tishomingo County had always been told that Frances died and her two older sons and husband, Jonathan, came to Tishomingo county. He married Eliza Poteet and they had a family here in Tish Co. However, I have discovered that not only did Frances not die (then anyway!) but that "they" had Sallie and now possibly Joel C.!! The two boys I mentioned above that came with their father to Tish Co were Alexander Uriah (my ancestor) and William David - who left tish co sometime after 1870 census -anyone have anything on his whereabouts?? I have come into ownership of a handwritten document by Francis I suppose - that lists her Yancey family and was entitled "Grandfather and Grandmother of Alexander Uriah and William David McMasters" - the Yancey and Moore families - very good documentation - I am willing to share if anyone recognizes any of this! Thanks for any help! Brenda in Iuka

    3. I need help to solve a mistery of my missing gggrandfather John L. Hardy b. 1810 d. 1884 in Giles TN. I have a church record that gives John's death date. John's wife Martha is buried in Good Billy Brown Cemetery but he is not. I was told he is buried in the Case Cemetery with his father Coleman and mother Lucy but he is not lised in the Giles cemetery book. I have a service record that shows a John L. Hardy enlisting in Co. K, 1 Reg Tennessee in 1861 but John is not listed in the recent roster of the company on the web page. My record shows him becomming an Ensign in 1864 in 1 Reg TN Infantry. I would really like to find John's grave and any information about his military service but he doesn't seem to show up anywhere. Has anyone seen John? Any help will be appreciated. 3. Yes S&K is getting the credit for the donation --- but the cost comes out of the original purchasers pocket --- with no credit and nothing tax deductible --- Obion Co. 1870 and 1880 cost $437.50. And they have all the rights of resale. Granted, I would not want to stand there and scan that many pages, but there does seem to be some inequity here. Or has it been a long hard week?
