Of great interest of Giles, Lincoln and other middle Tennessee counties--Merrell, Paysinger, Carden, Minatra, Birdsong, and many, many more surnames...... I recently found on-line an inventory of an amazing work on family history located at TSLA in Nashville. The widow of one John Robert Paysinger donated 33 years worth of his work to the library. I studied and copied from one reel many pieces of interesting and useful information on my husband's Paysinger family from Giles and Lincoln Counties. Many family names are mentioned in the on-line summary. You can see the inventory of his manuscript collection at: http://www.state.tn.us/sos/statelib/techsvs/manud/paysijr.htm Good luck, happy hunting. I'm still dizzy from my Saturday afternoon spent searching. Julia SAVAGE MINATRA Rutherford County,TN
Howdy, I'm sorry I can't offer any assistance in the recent BROWNLOW queries, but it reminded me that I have a big hole in my family tree. In my LEE family of Giles Co., I have a Celia P. LEE (b. abt. 1810) who married a George BROWLOW. Does anyone have more info on this family? I descend from a brother of Celia, Benjamin Jefferson LEE b.1814. Also I need info on Franklin PETTUS who married a sister, Judith LEE (b. abt. 1808?, d. in Arkansas). I know that there was a BROWNLOW or two who led some Giles Co. soldiers in the Civil War. Let me know more about this BROWNLOW book. Thanks, Henry P Mayo College Station, TX

There was a James (or John) Polk Brownlow b in 1841 who was a banker in Maury Co, TN married Hester Ussery. He died in 1917-18 and is buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Columbia, Maury Co. He is believed to be descended from Rev. James Polk Brownlow and Isabella McCrary. Rev. James Polk Brownlow was a son of James Brownlow and his wife Mary (Polly) who was an early settler on Lynn Creek having moved from Chatham Co NC. Marjorie B. Helmholz published a Brownlow history in 1984 in which she relates those you mention came to Virginia. James Brownlow and Kate Wright arrived sometime around 1750, taught school in Lexington and Abingdon, VA. Their children were Alexander, Isaac, Samuel, William, Joseph. Joseph b 1779-81 m Catherine Gannaway in Augusta Co VA, lived in Wythe Co VA and Sullivan Co TN where both died leaving orphaned children: William Gannaway Brownlow, Elizabeth Wright Brownlow and Joseph A. Brownlow b 1814 in Wythe Co VA m Mary R. Barr with their children being Henry C. (died single), John Bell (died single) and Thomas Gannaway m Bell Piper. Hope this helps. Regards, Marilyn
I am trying to make contact with anyone researching the BROWNLOW family in Tennessee.....specifically, Alexander S. Brownlow (b. 1817). He was the son of Catharine Gannaway and Joseph Brownlow and the brother to William Gannaway Brownlow. In 1840 or 1841, he married his first wife (our great great grandmother). It's her name I am trying to find. She had four children: James A.(1841), Jacob N.(1842), Nancy Ann(1845), and Sarah who was born in 1847. In August of 1847, he married again (to a Nancy C. Walters) leaving us to believe his first wife died in childbirth. I can find nothing on wife #1....no name, no marriage record, death record, burial or anything.. I believe her son, James A. (b. 1841) lived in Giles Co.as an adult, and maybe someone there would have the names of his parents.....or something about him that would lead me to that information. Any help would be appreciated since on this one person I have hit the proverbial, brick wall! Pam Vineyard pamalav@neocom.net

Minetree September 1, 1995". This work is available in the Giles Historical Society's Minatra file at the library in Pulaski, TN. Some references to the Christian name "Martha" -- none the Martha we're looking for but interesting in light of family naming patterns: Page 4 John Minitree and Martha Denton were issued their license to be married on August 23, 1808 (Marriage Register 1784-1865, Clerk's Office, Hustings Count, Petersburg, Va.). Page 14 Martha Batte Minetree Fitts, born 1873, daughter of Joseph Powhatan Minetree (there's that swamp again) Page 15 Martha Fitts, born 1910, daughter of Martha Batte Minetree and Charles Freeman Fitts. (They also had daughters Josephine Minetree and Elizabeth Peabody.) Page 22 Martha Parish, born 1942, daughter of James lawrence Minetree, JR and Rhoda Blossom. THE SAME CHRISTIAN NAMES REPEAT THROUGHOUT THE MINETREE FAMILY, BUT THESE DON'T APPEAR TO BE OUR ELUSIVE MARTHA. DO YOU KNOW that Louise Warner Minetree, born Washington, D.C. 29 Jan 1907 married Charles Venable Minor, a son of Raleigh ColsTon and Natalie (nee Venable) Minor? This noted on page 22 of the above. And noted on page 28 in Generation V, other Colston names are John Colston Sinclair b. 1961 and Susan Colston Cobb b. 1964. Someone out there has your Martha. AND Re John Mikeska's list of children above, I have information that I believe came from someone's family history database. My copy came from the Old Records at the Giles County Courthouse in Pulaski, TN. It begins with a statement on 'The Minatra Family'...in part..."CARTER'S GROVE PLANTATION, A History by Mary A. Stephenson, prepared for SEALANTIC FUND INCORPORATED by Research Department, Colonial Williamsburg, Williamsburg, Virginia..." listing other children of David MINATRA born 1796 and Elizabeth ? born 1803: Elvira - NO BIRTH DATE Josephine - NO BIRTH DATE Mary - NO BIRTH DATE Could there be a Martha? No Dewitt G. is named, but I've seen it in other papers Let's keep in touch. Julia SAVAGE MINATRA Rutherford County TN
Julia Have been researching since our visit, and more and more convinced my Martha Minatree, m-William Colston (1850-Giles Co., TN census) is sister to William Henry Minatree, b-1825. Have any of you Giles County MINATRA searchers looked into the possibility below on Ann MINITREE? I'm writing to a living HEREFORD in California to clarify Ann Minitree's parents' dates below --they're not right--IF they are her parents. CONSIDER THIS---- Ann or Frances Ann MINITREE born about 1740 in Charles Co. MD, died after 1833 in Franklin Co. TN. She was the daughter (some think) of Jacob Andrew MINITREE who died about 1760 in Charles Co. MD and Rosamond HOLLAND born about ?1742?. Ann married in about 1760 Henry HEREFORD (sr), son of John HEREFORD and Jane BARNES. There are still HEREFORDs in Franklin and Lincoln counties. I found G.W. Menatree witnessed Julia A. McCRACKEN's will in Lincoln County where she left "all property of every kind" to R.S. and M.E. HEREFORD. Probated Sept 5, 1908. J. L. BARNES of Pulaski, Giles Co. TN. I'm wondering if our OLD David MINITREE might have come to middle Tennessee because of his familial relationship to Ann above. Do ANY of you know a particular reason that brought him to finally settle in Giles County except wanderlust? I found this group of Maryland MINITREE searchers through Fleetwood JONES a descendant of Minitree (first name) JONES. It never ends. Write me if you care to discuss. Also have many, many other Giles County names to connect. Julia SAVAGE MINATRA Rutherford Co. TN

This one was too good not to pass on. Jan in Arizona **************************************** He was driving home one evening, on a two-lane country road. Work, in this small mid-western community, was almost as slow as his beat-up Pontiac. But he never quit looking. Ever since the Levis factory closed, he'd been unemployed, and with winter raging on, the chill had finally hit home. It was a lonely road. Not very many people had a reason to be on it, unless they were leaving. Most of his friends had already left. They had families to feed and dreams to fulfill. But he stayed on. After all, this was where he buried his mother and father. He was born here and knew the country. He could go down this road blind, and tell you what was on either side, and with his headlights not working, that came in handy. It was starting to get dark and light snow flurries were coming down. He'd better get a move on. You know, he almost didn't see the old lady, stranded on the side of the road. But even in the dim light of day, he could see she needed help. So he pulled up in front of her Mercedes and got out. His Pontiac was still sputtering when he approached her. Even with the smile on his face, she was worried. No one had stopped to help for the last hour or so. Was he going to hurt her? He didn't look safe, he looked poor and hungry. He could see that she was frightened, standing out there in the cold. He knew how she felt. It was that chill that only fear can put in you. He said, "I'm here to help you m'am. Why don't you wait in the car where it's warm. By the way, my name is Joe." Well, all she had was a flat tire, but for an old lady, that was bad enough Joe crawled under the car looking for a place to put the jack, skinning his knuckles a time or two. Soon he was able to change the tire. But he had to get dirty and his hands hurt. As he was tightening up the lug nuts, she rolled down her window and began to talk to him. She told him that she was from St. Louis and was only just passing through. She couldn't thank him enough for coming to her aid. Joe just smiled as he closed her trunk. She asked him how much she owed him. Any amount would have been all right with her. She had already imagined all the awful things that could have happened had he not stopped. Joe never thought twice about the money. This was not a job to him. This was helping someone in need, and God knows there were plenty who had given him a hand in the past. He had lived his whole life that way, and it never occurred to him to act any other way. He told her that if she really wanted to pay him back, the next time she saw someone who needed help, she could give that person the assistance that they needed, and Joe added "...and think of me". He waited until she started her car and drove off. It had been a cold and depressing day, but he felt good as he headed for home, disappearing into the twilight. A few miles down the road the lady saw a small cafe. She went in to grab a bite to eat, and take the chill off before she made the last leg of her trip home. It was a dingy looking restaurant. Outside were two old gas pumps. The whole scene was unfamiliar to her. The cash register was like the telephone of an out of work actor, it didn't ring much. Her waitress came over and brought a clean towel to wipe her wet hair. She had a sweet smile, one that even being on her feet for the whole day couldn't erase. The lady noticed that the waitress was nearly eight months pregnant, but she never let the strain and aches change her attitude. The old lady wondered how someone who had so little could be so giving to a stranger. Then she remembered Joe. After the lady finished her meal, and the waitress went to get her change from a hundred dollar bill, the lady slipped right out the door. She was gone by the time the waitress came back. She wondered where the lady could be, then she noticed something written on a napkin. There were tears in her eyes, when she read what the lady wrote. It said, "You don't owe me a thing, I've been there too. Someone once helped me out, the way I'm helping you. If you really want to pay me back, here's what you do. Don't let the chain of love end with you." Well, there were tables to clear, sugar bowls to fill, and people to serve, but the waitress made it through another day. That night when she got home from work and climbed into bed, she was thinking about the money and what the lady had written. How could she have known how much she and her husband needed it? With the baby due next month, it was going to be hard. She knew how worried her husband was, and as he lay sleeping next to her, she gave him a soft kiss and whispered soft and low, "Everything's gonna be alright, I love you Joe." Pass it on...

PASSENGER LISTS OF VESSELS ARRIVING AT ST. PETERSBURG, FLORIDA, DECEMBER 1926-MARCH 1941. Description by Claire Prechtel-Kluskens. On the single roll of this microfilm publication, M1959, is reproduced ship passenger lists for alien, citizen, and crew member arrivals at St. Petersburg, Florida, for the period December 15, 1926 to March 1, 1941. These lists were submitted to the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) by the captain or master of each vessel at the port of entry. These particular records were microfilmed by the INS on November 7, 1946, and were transferred to the National Archives on microfilm. The original records were destroyed by the INS. Some of the records may be difficult to read; in particular, the passenger lists for the period January 21, 1939 to March 1, 1941 may be more difficult to read than other records on this roll. Errors in arrangement, omission, or microfilming cannot be corrected. Many of the arriving aliens appear to have been Canadians travelling on vacation. There are also Cuban citizens, including teenage Cuban boys who were students at the Florida Military Academy in St. Petersburg. Other alien arrivals include Swedish, British, Irish, Czechoslovakian, Spanish, French, German, and Australian citizens. Some passengers were American citizens returning from vacations or business abroad. (The following was a formatted document; formatting lost in conversion to email. Sorry.)
