It is an excellent site for those researching in North and South Carolina. They have alot of cemeteries in several NC & SC counties loaded onto the website. They list the surnames at the top. I am new to the list and would like to ask for help from anyone who might have ties to the ELDERS of Giles County, Tennesee. I have recently discovered that my grandfather was Douglas Whitfield ELDER, son of David Colston and Margaret Harwell ELDER. My grandfather changed his identity and disappeared from Giles County in 1924. I know all about his life as Frank Douglas Fisher, but would really like to know why Douglas Whitfield ELDER changed his identity and disappeared from Giles County. Can anyone help? Thank you. Looking for ANY information on the following: William Carroll JOHNS (a Union soldier in the Civil War) and wife Lucy BELLEW JOHNS, were in Giles County in 1866. Wm Carrol was "shot while attempting to arrest a lawless character who had attempted to kill a Union soldier on 16 July 1866." Two months later, a son, B. Melvin JOHNS was born. Lucy remarried in 1873 to William G. RUTHERFORD/RETHERFORD The 1900 Giles County census (18th Civil District) shows W. G. RUTHERFORD age 72, Lucy H., age 59, and Mary C., daughter, age 19. Census says that Lucy had "4 children, 3 living."

Hi, I am Craig McCanless and I am pretty new to this list. I hope that someone can help me with a bit of a problem. On 3/14/1862 Archibald Smith Young was murdered in Giles Co. I have been told that the accused killers were Coleman B. Sutton and John G. McCanless. They both fled and were never captured. Are there any newspapers from that time available or any other resources that I can get my hands on?? I am trying to find out which McCanless family John G. was a part of. Thanks
