    3. Dear Fred: I don't know if it's the same David Gordon, but it might be... Is yours the one in the 1860 Giles Co. census, with a "farm laborer" named Peterson McGill enumerated with his household? If so, I can tell you a bit about Peterson. Peterson McGill was my 3rd ggrandfather. He was born somewhere in TN about 1816. His parents were Robert and Elizabeth ____ McGill. Elizabeth died about 1827, leaving her seven kids as orphans (don't know what happened to Robert). At the time of the 1860 census, Peterson was married to Oda Marbut, and they had a number of kids, including six or so from Peterson's first marriage to Mahala Long. Peterson's family is not found, though, in the 1860 census, probably because the 1860 census returns for SW Giles have been lost. His family does though reappear in the 1870 & 1880 censuses. I don't know why Peterson was enumerated with the Gordon's, as he had his own farm. Could he have been helping out the Gordon's as a friend or relative? Perhaps we'll never know. By the way, in case it might help, families which seem to have been allied with the McGill's were Sheltons, Kennemores, Longs, Marbuts and Leggs. 1. Re: [TNGILES-L] Looking for Long's
    2. James H. Davis
    3. cHi, Robbie: I don't have much, but maybe what I do have will help. My 3rd great-grandfather was Peterson McGill, b. somewhere in TN abt. 1816. He lived his entire life within the 10-mile radius of where Giles & Lawrence Counties in TN and Lauderdale and Limestone in AL come together. He was apparently married four times, but I have records of marriage licenses for the last two. The second is confirmed by church records, and the first marriage, the one relevent to you, I have only (good) but unconfirmed knowledge of. His first wife, whom he must have married about 1836-1837 was said to be Mahala LONG. I have heard that her father's name was probably Daniel. She would have been born about 1820. She and Peterson had seven children before she died about 1849. The only census where they would have been together was that from 1840, at which time they lived right over the border from Giles in Lawrence County. At the very least, there were LONGS in the vicinity by the late 1830's. They were probably there long before that. I a recent visit to Oxford Cemetery in Giles, my sister and I accidentally tripped over a stone which just poked out of the earth and looked to have been buried for years. We pulled it up far enough to see that it was obvoiusly inscribed by an amateur. The last name was LONG, and the first name was unreadable. The date, not altogether clear, looked like 1820-something. Good luck with your search. By the way, Peterson McGill's other wives were Oda MARBUT, Sarah SHERWOOD and Catherine DALY. Several of Peterson's kids and their spouses are buried around Giles Co., mostly in Oxford and Booth's Chapel Cemeteries. I have never found Peterson's grave. It may not have had a stone. Or, perhaps he was buried in a soiltary plot on the farm on which he was living near Anderson in Lauderdale Co. at the time of his death in 1888. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know Jim Davis

    1. [TNGILES-L] Looking for Long's
    2. Is there anyone out there who can sort of help me over this brick wall ? I am researching the Long family. I understand there was 2 sets of Long's in Giles Co. This is my line as told to me by my aunt : Long, Daniel married Johnson, Sarah J. on Oct. 15, 1882 in Giles Co. no info is known to me at this time as to who their parents were, I cant find them in the 1880 census at all, strange as it may sound. Daniel & Sarah's children were : 1) Wilson Long born April 7, 1892 in Giles Co 2) Wesley Long in Giles Co. birthdate unknown 3) Wiley Long in Giles Co. birthdate unknown 4) Maggie Long in Giles Co birthdate unknown I did however find a Wesley Long born December 30, 1896 and a Maggie Long, both are buried in Tn, just not sure if this is the same people I need to be looking for. Wilson Long married Emma Lee Randolph, also from Giles Co. Tn. I have been told that Emma Lee Randolph's parents were James Frank Randolph & Martha Randolph, but there again, I am not sure. If anyone out there can point me in the right direction, I would appreciate it. Thanks in advance Robbie
