Most of them from Giles County. With the help of several people I have met on line and a few documents I have been able to locate I have come up with following Ahnentafel. Hi List, I am in need of a little help, again with my Randolph line. According to the IGI James Franklin Randolph & Martha A. Randolph had a son named Samuel Randolph born abt. 1879, Giles Co. Also on the IGI there was a daughter named Mary Jo Randolph but in fact this is Mary Lou Randolph born abt. 1886, Giles Co. parents were listed as James Frank Randolph & Martha Randolph. A daughter named Nancie Randolph was born abt. 1889, Giles Co. parents were listed as James Frank Randolph & Martha Randolph. Emma L. Randolph, born abt. 1893, Giles Co. parents listed as James Frank Randolph & Martha Randolph. Ida Belle Randolph, born same as Emma L. parents listed as James Frank Randolph & Martha Randolph. There was another son, not listed on the IGI, his name was Walter Houston Randolph, born Feb. 1895. According to my grandmother's death certificate, her mother was Babe Randolph, and according to the death announcement of Mary Lou Randolph Long, her mother was also Babe Randolph. Emma L. married Wilson Long, son of Daniel Long and Sarah Johnson. Ida Belle never married but had a child by Wesley Long, son of Daniel Long & Sarah Johnson, the child's name was Rena. Walter H. Randolph married a Randolph, her name was Emma Virginia. I have nothing on Nancie Randolph and Samuel Randolph. There is a James F. Randolph that married Martha A. Randolph on July 22, 1877 in Giles Co. There is a James Randolph that married a Martha Stafford on March 12, 1891 in Giles Co. Could this in fact be the same James Randolph ? Where does the name "Babe" Randolph come in ? As you can see I am somewhat confused. Any & all help would be appreciated. Many thanks in advance. Respectfully Robbie

Hi Gladys, I'm so glad you posted this. I have long felt that this is where some of my Tyler's were buried, but don't know. This is all thats in the Giles Co Cemetery Book about it. ELKTON CUMBERLAND PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH CEMETERY Location: Highway 31 at Elkton. Once quite a large cemetery, it has been abused and almost destroyed. There are only a few tombstones and vinca minor to remind one that it was ever once a pretty cemetery. Many early residents of Elkton are buried here. I am trying to find information regarding the history of the Old Cumberland Church of Elkton, TN; Giles Co., TN. I am not sure about the origination of the church, but believe it was closed around the early or mid 1920's. The cemetery of this church has all but been demolished, and I would surely like to have a listing of a congregation there, or perhaps history of the cemetery, or whatever records might still be available. My ancestors are buried there. Will surely appreciate hearing from anyone who might help me in this search. Greetings Giles County Rootsweb List! I'm new to the list, and just thought I'd introduce myself. My name is Jane Gilbert, and I currently live in Bel Air, MD. My father, Lewis Harold Gilbert, was born in Prospect, TN, but moved to Akron, OH as a young child. Here are the surnames I'm researching with first names that follow in ascending generations: GILBERT Lewis Harold ->Russell->Tazwell->Cary->David->Thomas->Caleb RUSSELL Eudora->maybe James or Jarvis (the census record is hard to read) COLE Martha Pearl->Lewis Houston BALCH Elizabeth->Hiram->Archibald->John I've already encountered one challenging problem in this research...Lewis Houston Cole, my great-grandfather, was apparently born to a single woman. He was raised by Margaret Cole Lawrence (aka "Aunt Peggy") and her husband Tom Lawrence in the Minor Hill area. Because her maiden name was Cole, I'm assuming she was related to Lewis, perhaps even an aunt. I also noticed that in the 1880 census, there was a 17 year old boarder living with her and her husband by the name of Eunice Cole. She might also be a clue. The 1880 census indicates that Aunt Peggy's parents were born in SC, Lewis Houston's in Alabama, and Eunice's in TN. Here is some more vital information on these Coles I'm looking for: Lewis Houston Cole 1844 - 1908 b: 1844 d: 1908 .. +Elizabeth Louisa Balch 1859 - 1936 b: 1859 in Giles County, TN d: 1936 Margaret Cole 1829 - 1915 b: September 22, 1829 d: August 19, 1915 in Minor Hill, Giles County, TN .. +Thomas Lawrence 1834 - 1917 b: September 21, 1834 d: February 23, 1917 in Minor Hill, Giles County, TN Eunice Cole b. Abt. 1863 Any information on these Coles or any of my other lines much appreciated! I'm happy to share what I have. Jane Gilbert
Since July, the family of Solomon B. Smith in Giles County, Tennessee, looked to me like a deadend street. I heard from Beth Mize who had only two names of his children, Martha Caroline and Nancy Louisa Jane, but no other information and leads. In her response, she asked for information on the parents of Solomon Smith and Rose Anna, or Rosannah, Leath, and knew, as I pointed out in previous postings, that Rosannahs mother was Catherine Sanduski and Rosannah was named after her grandmother, Rosannah, wife of Emanuel Sandusky, written Seduskie in Tennessee records. Gladys Shannon was interested in Solomon Smith. Again I dont know what her connection was to Smith. Doris James was a little more forthcoming. I may be related to the Solomon Smith who married Roseanna Leath, she wrote. Was he the son of Elijah Smith? The Leath family history stopped with the marriage of Solomon Smith and Catherine Sandusky. Thus I was hampered from doing more research until I developed a census history of this family. The 1850 census of Giles County presents a better picture of the Smith family. It listed his age as 45 years and birthplace as South Carolina, and his wife, listed as Rose Anna, was 38 and born in Tennessee. The first two names, John and Nancy N.(?), were each 20 years old, and in a box following their names was this significant item Married within year. It meant that John and Nancy were not twins but husband and wife and still part of the Solomon Smith family. Knowing that Rose Anna, or Rosannah, was born about 1812, and John was born in 1830, Solomon Smith and Rosannah Leath must have been married in 1829, when the bride was 17 years old, or around that time. Remember the question Doris James asked. Was Solomon the son of Elijah Smith? In the 1840 census of Giles County, Elijah Smith, then in his fifties, and a free white female, then in the 15-20 year range, were living in the same area of Giles County amidst the Fleamans, the Leaths, and John Sandusky. The elder Elijah Smith was not listed in 1850. The next son that Solomon and Rose Anna Smith had in Tennessee about 1832 was named Elijah. Evidently he left the household in the 1850s. He is not listed with the other siblings in 1860. If he had descendants, I would like to have this information. Did Elijah fight in the war? The next child, Martha Caroline, whom Beth Mize recalled, was 16 years old in 1850. What more do we know about her? Like Elijah, she must have been married in the 1850s and left the family hearth. She was not listed with the parents in 1860. Two years younger than Martha Caroline was Solomon D. Smith and four years younger was Lucretia or Lucretica. Nothing else is known about them. They were not in the family group in 1860. So were they married and on their own? Four of the nine children listed in 1850 were still at home in 1860. These were Daniel, born in 1840, William A. M., 1842, Brittain Capel, 1844, and Nancy Louisa Jane, who was born in October, 1850. Three of these boys were of fighting age in 1861. Were any of them in the armies of the North or the South? Solomon and Rose Anna Smith apparently rounded out their family with the the birth of a girl, Kester A., in 1854. I already know that John Smith, last name of his wife, Nancy, unknown, had a daughter Dora in 1850(which must have been December because she was not listed in the November 1850 census). On 11 August 1870 Dora Smith married Calvin Mathese in Washington County, Tennessee. This is the kind of information I am seeking for all the siblings, whether any of the males shed blood during the war, the dates of death of the parents. Smith is such a common name. But the first names I have found in the census returns would help to fill in the blanks we have in the family group sheets. Please pitch in. I have a mail box for bulkier material. It is: Edward Pinkowski 10212 SW 59 St. Cooper City, Florida 33328-6531

Giles Co. Tn , in the early days was Indian Territory. Settlers who homesteaded there were doing so illegally, accorfing to the Government. Every so ofter the Gov. troops would swoop in, burn the settlers houses and crops to get them off the Territory. The settlers would retreat over the line for a bit, then go back and build and plant again. When Tenn. became a state and counties were formed one by one, the settlers were left alone. I believe Tenn. became a state in 1797. DollyC. looking for the Fleemans Karl Blount wrote: > I am also interested in the First Settlers of Giles Co, Tn. I am also interested in the First Settlers of Giles Co, Tn. Since I know so little about the area (I am just starting on this group and area) I understand from the last querie that there was a FIRE ? and they had been run off their land by the Military at Ft Hampton??? Could some one give me a little more information on this incident. I am not sure just when our family came into the area since we cannot confirm our Benj Bennett connection for certain. But our ancestor Joseph was born 1816 and his sister, Malinda was born 1813 and it was told that they are from Giles Co, Tn. They left the area before 1820. and went to Wayne Co, Ms with two older brothers, Jacob and Thomas. But where the Bennetts in Giles Co, during the trouble with the Military at Ft Hampton??? Any help would be appreciated. phyllis kblount@ccsinc.com
