Hi all, If you have a Family History Center, run by the Mormon's in your area, you can order a Soundex for the state you are looking in, for 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920 it is like an index, you just go thru the microfilm looking for your surname in Giles Co, noting the page #'s... Then you have them to go to the county.... Soundex's are great because they are for any surname that even sounds likes yours... So if there is variant's in the way you spell the surname you get them all --- i.e.; Stewart/Stuart ----- Original Message ----- From: <marhonda@swbell.net> To: <TNGILES-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, February 07, 2000 3:02 AM Subject: Re: [TNGILES-L] 1880 Census on line > Could someone give the url please? Mike: The search engine Dave has on the Giles Co. page works just as well as an index. Try it! Just enter the surname you are looking for and you only get the hits that contain that surname on the page. Time consuming or not, it's wonderful to have access to any census online. Thanks to all who make this possible. I didn't realize that not everyone had this info. The following is directly to the Federal Census Index. http://www.usgenweb.org/census/states/tennesse/tennesse.htm Giles has other years available as does other counties...happy hunting. I understand about the wait for the pages to download....I usually play a game or something in between the pages <lol>....but, I've found LOTS of information and it is handy when you can't get to the library. I have a 56 K modem, which in rural areas where South Central Bell hasn't provided the necessary updated facilities, it means absolutely nothing! I am NEVER able to access the Internet faster than 21600 kbs. I hope this doesn't sound like I am complaining, as living in Webster County, MS is a long haul from Giles County, TN and I am happy to have the Census in any form available. But, under the aforementioned conditions, it would be NICE to have an index. Willard Stallings Webster County, MS

Hey Wanda- According to the book Heritage of Rowan Co NC, the Flemings, Sitrewalt,s Sloop's, Overcash's. and Graham's were among the earliest settlers in Rowan Co. I did not see any reference to Tom Fleming. You did not list years he might have been there. There are lot of Fleming's listed. There was a Fleming School 1896-1935. All of above early settlers still had farms active in 1990 per book. In 1990, there was Mrs. Charles E. Fleming, member of D.A.R. living in Rowan Co. Henry Fleming was witness in Aug 1796 and Feb 1788. James had Land Grant # 1765 Deed Bk 11, page 773 dated 28 April 1789 North branch of Reedy Creek of Catawba River adj Donald McKay and Samuel Huston. widow Fleming on head branch of Withrow's Creek Oct 1787 John witness Dec 1791 and Aug 1791. You might want to write to Rowan County Library, 201 W. Fisher St. Box 1009, Salisbury, NC 28144 to ask since Flemings are earliest settlers. Hello Everyone! Just found a good website for Cemetery Records. Thought I'd share it with everyone. It gave me a new lead as to the area in Kentucky that one of my families may have gone. Hope it helps someone! http://www.interment.net/ Jennifer Fuqua
