A number of my relatives in Giles County moved from Franklin County, NC, around the mid-1800s. I have found that several of these lines married into families from Brunswick County, VA, their northern neighbor across the state line. In compiling a list of families who were possibly neighbors in NC and Giles, I have come up with a list of possibilities. Could someone help me confirm some of these relationships? I would especially appreciate notification by those lines with a connection to Cedar Rock township along Peachtree Creek near Louisburg. Some of these families had a close relationship with John King, known as the father of NC Methodism. Definites Maybes May Webb? Boon Gilliam? Lancaster Ezell? Abernathy Houze? Has a similar list of Giles families from Brunswick County been assembled? Thanks, Pat Touw
Hi Kenneth and others interested; I descend from Frederick Abernathy who married 1st Abigail Harwell, md 2nd Milly Davenport Feb 13 1795 at Bristol Parish, Bruns. Co VA. He never came to Giles Co. He left a will dated 19 Dec 1816 in Brunswick Co VA naming his only son by Milly as his executor. His son was Matthew Abernathy who married Elizabeth Jackson [Eliza J.] Jackson on Nov 20, 1827 Bristol Parish, Bruns. Co VA and were the parents of my great-grandfather, Henry M.C. Abernathy , who married Alcy 'Caroline' Graves on 25 Dec, 1852 Giles Co TN. She was dau. of Campbell Graves and his unknown to me 1st wife. Ginny Keefer nee Virginia L. White

A relative by the name Green Buford and wife and family are listed on page 250 also; line number 204. My G Grandfather is their oldest son (James) Monroe Buford who is shown to be age 9. On the 1880 Giles County Census, it shows my GG Grandmother Polina was still living in District 12 with my G Grandfather and five other siblings. Martin has remarried and was living in Concordia, Bolivar County, Mississippi with a new wife Lucinda. Green Buford had moved his family to Concordia MS too.

Among my Giles County ancestors were Adkinson, Cameron, Johnson, Montgomery, Prince, Sandusky, Scott, Story, White and Wilbur. There was Indian ancestry in some of these families. I believe at one time Indians were listed on records as mulatto or black - can anyone verify this one way or the other? Good luck to you in your ancestry.
Here's a site that collects slave data to make genealogy research easier for descendents of slaves. http://www.afrigeneas.com/ Jan in Arizona
I have no problem with any descendant of any race sending in queries and answers being posted. Many of us have records of slave names that might be helpful to others. I would gladly help anyone I could with a specific query. BUT, this running on for days on end about slavery in general in not helpful to anyone and is beating a dead horse. Thanks for responding. To the person who asked: Who is Donna...... I'm no one special......But I felt like the subject of slavery was becoming overwhelming for some of us. I was adding my two-cents worth to move on. It became a debate, not a "discussion". I enjoy the list very much, but when we start attacking eachother, it makes me want to unsub and I don't want to do that. Some of your queries or info may go to the Giles Co. site which I maintain.....and thats MY contribution to you guys and to genealogy in general. But not at the expense of being attacked. My family also came from Giles Co., so there's another purpose that the list is so important to me. I'll continue monitoring the site, but......... Donna

I just can't imagine what it was like to be a slave, being torn away from your family and sold like a horse - "sound, sensible and a slave for life.". I agree that probably a lot of people treated their slaves well, but there were a lot that did not. No one has the right to enslave another person. My husband's family did free their slaves before making the trip to Macon County because the slaves had to travel by land with the horses, cattle, etc. The family was afraid that they would encounter problems along the way if they were not free. I'm personally growing weary of it. If it's pertinent to Giles County and Middle Tennessee history, then it needs to be discussed, but this website should not become a political sounding board. Bill Massey

My GG Grandfather and GG Grandmother were part of the 1870 Giles County Census: Martin Buford and Polina (Pauline) Taylor-Buford had 7children in the 1870 census. Pauline was born in Pulaski and Martin was born in Mississippi. Martin had remarried by the 1880 Giles County Census and he moved to Concordia, Bolivar County, Mississippi. He and his new wife Lucinda were recorded on the 1880 Bolivar County Census. Martin and his Giles County family were listed as people of mixed races (mulatto). There were many people of color with the surname of Buford that were born in Giles Country, District 12, in Pulaski, that were ex-slaves and I suppose that Martin had blood relatives amongst them. Maybe an older brother who went by the name of Green Buford, who also moved to Concordia, Mississippi and was recorded on the 1880 census from Bolivar County. Regardless of how brutal or how wrong slavery was, you have to admit that it was institutionalized and lasted over 400 years, so to blame any one generation or any part of one society is not the problem. How do you acknowledge such inhumanity to man and not blame the institutions that allowed it to thrive. My GG Grandfather was a person of mixed races -- and he was a slave, I still don't understand how slave owners could enslave themselves, let alone justify slavery of any human being. My decendence could very well be related to the two Buford brothers who were part of the founding fathers of Giles County Tennessee?
I find the Slave issue very interspersing and informative. Who is Donna? Is she the Web administrator (or whatever they are called), if so, I will refrain from making comments about slaves. mwk In a message dated 2/22/2005 9:31:27 P.M. They are also interested in genealogy. I have heard from some who thought they might have belonged to some of my ancestors. Some of the slaves are listed in wills, etc. In the will of one of my ancestors he stated re an old slave in the family: ..Mary will get to choose which one of my children she wants to live with and the one she chooses will get all of my money and land... Slavery is part of genealogy. It just irked me for someone to say they were ashamed of their ancestors. I am proud of my ancestors - they were not perfect and I am not perfect.
I probably can put you in touch with a descendant from one of the Hastings slaves. Her views - well, her whole family has suffered greatly because their progenitor, a slave named Daniel Hastings was drug out of his owner's property by Yankee soldiers and forced to serve them as a cook. A year or so later when a battle in Tennessee was not going their way, the Federal soldiers lined up all the blacks who were serving in their unit, positioning them in the front lines of the on-coming Confederate soldiers. Daniel was killed leaving a widow and several children. One of those children continued to work for the Hastings family for many years after the war. This former slave descendant lives in and around Chicago. She has a webpage. I've not corresponded with her in three or four years, but I did help her track down some of her kinfolk. Ruth

Slavery at one time was legal in this country. Not all slaves were mistreated. After the Civil War, many remained with their white people until they died of natural causes.Shame on you for feeling the way you do about people who owned slaves. You probably need to go back and read up on some honest history.
